From growing the organic garden to managing prairie habitat, caring for our artifacts, restoring historic buildings, building an apiary and instituting a recycling program, real work happens here—work that we are very proud of and have been recognized for. WE’VE BEEN DISCOVERED Shaker Village has been selected as an independent member of the Discovery Destinations marketing partnership for its broad list of authentic activities embodying Discovery Communications’ core elements of nature, science, adventure and animals.

Shaker theology was the framework for the layout and design of their communities with the clear goal of creating heaven on earth. Pleasant Hill Shaker architecture is unlike any other Shaker community in the United States largely because it was influenced by one individual—Micajah Burnett. With no formal architectural training, Burnett perfected his own style that seamlessly blended prescribed Shaker principles with Federal style architecture. His unique approach brought striking beauty to simple, functional spaces. The twin spiral staircases in the Trustees’ Office (1839) have been singled out as examples of a unique design that exists “nowhere else in Shakerdom” (Nicoletta 1995).

The Shakers were inspired and prolific artists. It is estimated that the Shakers authored more than 20,000 hymns, anthems and spirituals, largely from 1837 to the late 1850s during a period of intense spiritual revival. Also during this time, spirit drawings were received as “gifts” or visions from God. Though never considered art by the Shakers, these sacred drawings certainly revealed a sense of artistry and expression.
