AT SHAKER VILLAGE

2014

NOTE FROM THE

PRESIDENT Summer energizes us. It invites a rare sense of freewheeling freedom. Shaker Village embodies the best of summer’s trailblazing spirit. The pioneering Kentuckians that built this Village more than 200 years ago left us a meaningful, shared heritage of community, sustainability and ingenuity. This summer, I am proud to introduce our refreshed brand and renewed commitment by sharing the legacies of the Kentucky Shakers. Our new logo is a bold symbol of the site’s warm hospitality, engaging activities and simple moments of peace. During the summer months, the new logo and color palette will be introduced throughout the Village and integrated into marketing materials, including our new website and expanded social media presence. Visit Shaker Village to experience new moments of exploration. Kayak up the rarely seen Dix River. Try your hand at SUP yoga. Rustle up fresh eggs in the chicken coop. Taste tomatoes from the garden. Discover your own trailblazing spirit at Shaker Village this summer.

FROM THE PROGRAM SPECIALIST The Pleasant Hill Shaker community was an inventive, progressive family that evolved during their 118 years on this site. Their technology, architecture, clothing, land use and beliefs changed throughout the 19th century and beyond. As we work this year to develop a new interpretation plan for our 3,000 acres, we have an opportunity to rediscover compelling Shaker perspectives and legacies. This summer, we are introducing new exhibits and our interpreters, guides and demonstrators will share stories in fun and approachable ways. Reaching new audiences and inspiring generations to support Shaker Village is critical to our future success. We look forward to seeing you soon at Shaker Village! JILL MALUSKY Director of Visitor Engagement

FROM THE GARDENER Supplying the Trustees’ Office Dining Room with fresh produce requires constant planning. The summer garden is in the ground and soon the tomatoes, okra, beans and melons will ripen. Before we even have a chance to enjoy summer’s bounty, we are exploring ways to extend the growing season. Over the next few months, new cold frames will be built and installed to protect plants from chilly fall nights. Cold-frames act as minigreenhouses to keep lateseason plants producing longer. Visit the garden this summer to learn how you can use cold frames in your own garden. DYLAN KENNEDY Garden Supervisor

JUNE 21 AT 2PM SPREADING SEEDS Discover man made and natural methods of spreading seeds in the garden. JULY 19 AT 2 PM COMPANIONS IN THE GARDEN Learn how certain plants work together to naturally protect and support each other and how to transition your garden through the seasons. AUGUST 16 AT 2 PM BLACK GOLD Learn how to turn home and yard waste into valuable compost for your garden. COMPOSTING AT SHAKER VILLAGE Dining room, farm and garden, and grounds staff have begun collecting organic matter for new Village compost piles. The best recipe for rich compost includes 2-3 part carbon-based and 1-part nitrogen-based organic materials. Regularly turning the compost pile supplies oxygen and supports the breakdown of organic material by bacteria. This process produces nutrient-rich compost, which when added to garden soil, significantly improves plant health and growth. Reusing waste through our composting program is just one way Shaker Village is continuing the Shaker legacy of sustainable agricultural practices.

FROM THE FARMER It’s been a little over four months since our new American Lineback and Holstein steers joined our farm family. The boys are eating well, and since arriving, ten-month old Charlie and Daniel have gained 200 pounds each. The older fellas, Coby and Canton (both 2 ½ years old) have each gained 300 pounds. Both pairs are being trained on a yoke and are well on their way to becoming oxen. By definition, an ox is a working steer, of any breed of cattle, over four years of age. Stop by the farm to see how their training is going. DAVID PARIS Livestock Supervisor

Over the last several years, Shaker Village has restored more than 1,000 acres of native warm season grasses and wildflowers. Many guests never explore the Nature Preserve to see this rare habitat for themselves. Over the next few months, we will be installing a two-acre prairie maze within the Village to provide guests a fun way to discover the differences between native and nonnative grasses. It will take almost a year for the Big Blue Stem and Side Oats Gamma grasses to fully mature, but throughout, the process, guests will see a small-scale prairie restoration firsthand. DON PELLY & BEN LEFFEW Property Managers

FROM THE SUSTAINABILITY SPECIALIST This summer Shaker Village is renewing its commitment to sound environmental practices by developing a solid waste inventory and management improvement plan for onsite operations. The plan will consist of a sitewide recycling project, composting program and low-waste event initiative. Over the next year, energy efficiency and water usage goals will also be established. The Shakers wasted nothing, and today we seek to follow in their footsteps by establishing sound, environmentallyfriendly organizational practices. MERIN ROSEMAN Sustainability Program Coordinator
