THE SHAKESPEARE THEATRE OF NEW JERSEY BONNIE J. MONTE is now in her 24th season as the company’s Artistic Director. Under her leadership, the Theatre has evolved into one of the largest and most respected classical theatres in the nation. Ms. Monte has garnered national recognition for her highly successful revitalization of the institution, and for her outstanding commitment to arts education and professional training. The Theatre has become one of the nation’s leading training grounds for emerging classic theatre artists. During her more than two decades at the helm, the institution successfully completed a major capital campaign resulting in the complete renovation and expansion of the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre in 1998. She is currently working on The Legacy Project, the Theatre’s new campaign to perfect and protect the institution’s future. In 2002, the Theatre’s 40th anniversary year, she initiated a new partnership with the College of Saint Elizabeth, attaining a second summer performance venue for the organization: the Outdoor Stage, a unique and stunning Greek amphitheatre on St. Elizabeth’s campus. That same year, The Star-Ledger named the company “Regional Theatre of the Year,” and The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation awarded The Shakespeare Theatre a prestigious Strategic Partnership Grant in the amount of $1 million. In its January 2003 issue, New Jersey Monthly named Ms. Monte one of “40 New Jerseyans We Love.” She has received numerous awards and honors including a Women of Achievement Award, sponsored by the New Jersey General Assembly; an Alumni Achievement Award from Bethany College in West Virginia; and a Person of the Year Award from the National Society of Arts and Letters, for her longtime efforts to nurture young artists. She has also been named Professional Artist of the Year by the Arts Council of the Morris Area, and one of the 25 Most Influential People in the Arts in New Jersey by The Star-Ledger. Prior to arriving in New Jersey, Ms. Monte was a casting director at the prestigious Manhattan Theatre Club in New York City. From 1981 to 1989, she was Associate Artistic Director at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, working closely with renowned Artistic Director Nikos Psacharopoulos. While there, Ms. Monte initiated many new programs, including a second stage and an outdoor free theatre. In 1982, she was part of a writing team, which

included Psacharopoulos and Tennessee Williams, collaborating on Tennessee Williams: A Celebration, a major retrospective tribute to Mr. Williams’ entire literary canon. During her tenure at Williamstown, Ms. Monte also cast and helped produce joint ventures with other major theatres, including Sweet Bird of Youth at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway at Circle-in-the-Square, The Glass Menagerie at The Long Wharf Theatre, and Arms and the Man at The Pasadena Playhouse. Since 1990, she has directed over 50 productions for The Shakespeare Theatre, including stagings of numerous Shakespeare plays, as well as work from the Russian classic canon with a focus on Chekhov and Ostrovsky. Her special affinity for Tennessee Williams has resulted in highly acclaimed productions of A Streetcar Named Desire, Camino Real and Sweet Bird of Youth. She also directed shows for the Theatre’s Shakespeare LIVE! touring company including The Myths of Ancient Greece: Old Echoes, New Ears, which she also authored. She has created a number of original translations/ adaptations for the company’s Main and Outdoor stages, including Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Marivaux’s The Triumph of Love, Pirandello’s Enrico IV, Ostrovsky’s Artists and Admirers, Maeterlinck’s The Blue Bird, Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days, Goldoni’s The Servant of Two Masters, which was published by Playscripts, Inc, and this year’s The Alchemist. Ms. Monte has been actively involved in the training of new talent for the American stage through numerous training programs for over 30 years, and has also engaged in residencies at the University of South Carolina, where she directed The Trojan Women, and the University of Notre Dame, where she directed The Bacchae. She has been on the faculty of Drew University and The New School in Manhattan. Ms. Monte obtained a postgraduate conservatory degree in directing from The Hartman Conservatory and a B.A. in theatre from Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia. She has Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees from Drew University and the College of Saint Elizabeth. She is originally from Stamford, Connecticut.

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES

M

uch Ado About Nothing was most likely written between 1598 and 1600, though no specific performance of the play is noted before May of 1613. It was penned during the peak of Shakespeare’s greatest comic writings, just before As You Like It and Twelfth Night. These plays all contain richly drawn characters, fast-paced wit, and thrilling romantic intrigue. They also share dark and sinister undertones (an overthrown duke in As You Like It, the loss of family in Twelfth Night, and a cruel plot to undo a young woman’s reputation in Much Ado), which Shakespeare masterly interweaves with the story to create his richest comedies.

SOURCES OF THE PLAY There are several literary works from which Shakespeare may have gained inspiration in crafting Much Ado About Nothing. There is an Italian novella by Matteo Bandello (mid 1550s) which clearly shares many of the plot points of the Hero and Claudio story. A canto in Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso (1560) does as well. The tale can also be found in Spenser’s Fairie Queene (1590). It is also likely that Shakespeare read or attended a performance of Fedele and Fortunio which was presented in London around 1584. All of these sources tell the story of a young woman who is wrongly accused of infidelity, cast aside by her would-be groom, and then finally, after many trials, reunited with him. Though the principle story was no doubt borrowed and modified from existing sources, the most memorable characters of the play are solely Shakespeare’s creation. The “merry war” between the feisty Beatrice and the forever-bachelor Benedick is technically a subplot of the play, but for many it is the most memorable aspect of the play. In fact, when the play was performed for Princess Elizabeth’s wedding celebrations in 1613, it was under the title Benedicke and Betteris. The delightfully bumbling characters of Dogberry and Verges are also Shakespeare’s creation.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? “We call this play Much Ado About Nothing, but it seems clear to me that Shakespeare and his contemporaries called it Much Ado About Noting; a pun being intended between ‘nothing’ and ‘noting,’ which were then pronounced alike and upon which pun depends by far the more important significance of the title. The play is Much Ado About Nothing only in a very vague and general sense, but Much Ado About Noting in one especially apt and descriptive; for the much ado is produced entirely by noting. It begins with the noting of the Prince and Claudio, first by Antonio’s man, and then by Borachio, who reveals the conference to Don John; it goes on with Benedick noting the Prince, Leonato, and Claudio in the garden, and again with Beatrice noting [Hero] and Ursula in the same place; the incident upon which the action turns is the noting of Borachio’s interview with Margaret by the Prince and Claudio; and finally, the incident which unravels the plot is the noting of Borachio and Conrade by the Watch. That this sense, “to observe,” “to watch,” was one in which “note” was commonly used, it is quite needless to show the reference to the literature and the lexicographers of Shakespaeare’s day; it is hardly obsolete.” –Richard Grant White, Introduction to Much Ado (1889) Photos: Left, Scott as Jacques © Carol Rosegg, 2003. FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR On This Beatrice and Benedick

T

hirty-six years ago, after completing post-graduate studies, I moved to Manhattan to pursue my dream of being a director. A dear friend introduced me to his circle of peers, and we quickly became a tight group of aspiring young theatre artists, all trying to “make it” in a fiercely competitive field. Scott Wentworth was one of those young artists. Over the years, one by one, our friends were claimed by various fates and chosen paths, causing that tight group to slowly disperse, leaving only me and Scott still pursuing our original dreams. Our careers led us to places far removed from each other, but we remained friends and stayed in touch. Along the way, Scott married Marion Adler, a lovely actress that he met at the Stratford Festival in Canada. When I took the helm of The Shakespeare Theatre, Scott was one of the first guest directors that I invited here, and we were finally able to work together. Over the years, Scott has directed numerous productions here, including the legendary football-field Henry V during our homeless season in 1997. Marion also became a company member and has appeared here in plays directed by Scott, me, and various other directors. In 1998, Scott and Marion offered us the opportunity to present the American premiere of a musical they had written called Enter the Guardsman, based on Molnár’s original play The Guardsman. Under Scott’s direction, it was a huge success, and it was the show that first brought Bob Cuccioli to the company. In 2005, Scott switched hats again, appearing as Jacques in my production of As You Like It. Last season, while Marion was here playing Mrs. Gibbs in Our Town, Scott and Marion and I worked together on a reading of The Madwoman of Chaillot. It was then that we began a discussion about Scott and Marion returning soon to do a show where they could finally be on stage together at the same time That was the inception for this season’s Much Ado About Nothing, and they are the second husband and wife team that will be playing the renowned couple here at The Shakespeare Theatre. In 2003, Sherman Howard and Donna Bullock graced our stage in the same roles, under my direction. This time round, our Benedick is doing double duty, directing the show as well. Whether working together or solo, Scott and Marion have been integral members of this company for over 20 years now, bringing their many talents to us in various ways, on a wide variety of projects. Their long-time relationship with us is something of which I am very proud and for which I am very grateful.

“The artist appeals to that part of our being which is not dependent on wisdom; to that in us which is a gift and not an acquisition — and, therefore, more permanently enduring. He speaks to our capacity for delight and wonder, to the sense of mystery surrounding our lives; to our sense of pity, and beauty, and pain.”

- Joseph Conrad

THE SHAKESPEARE THEATRE OF NEW JERSEY ANNUAL FUND Ticket sales generate approximately 58% of the funds necessary to produce The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s artistic and educational work. The Theatre must raise the remaining funds through annual gifts from donors who recognize the impact that The Shakespeare Theatre has on the quality of life in New Jersey. We extend our deepest gratitude to the following individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies, whose gifts make it possible for The Shakespeare Theatre to present the finest in classic theatre on our Main Stage and our Outdoor Stage, and allow us to work with thousands of young people with our outreach education programs throughout New Jersey, the tri-state region, and the nation. For more information on how you can make a contribution to support the ongoing activities of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, please contact the Development Department at (973) 845-6732. The list below reflects gifts received in support of the Theatre’s general operating needs between April 1, 2013 and November 1, 2014.
