Spotlight on Education The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is a leader in arts education, offering a wide variety of interdisciplinary programs for students, educators, artists-in-training and the general public. The residency program was the first program for young people established by Bonnie Monte when she took over leadership of The Shakespeare Theatre in 1991. Since then it has evolved into our single most impactful program for students and teachers alike.
PAGES TO PLAYERS: Shakespeare Residency -The Pages to Players in-school residency engages students in a performance-based exploration of a single Shakespeare play, culminating in a final presentation of an abridged version of the play for their peers, parents, and/or members of the community. -These three- to five-week residencies take place during the school day (often during the Language Arts class period) with an entire grade level; usually grades four through six. -Pages to Players residencies can accommodate anywhere from 20 to over 100 students, with every young person participating daily and in the final presentation. -The primary focus of the residency is on using the skills involved in live performance as the tools for achieving greater proficiency and pleasure in the study of the English language generally, and Shakespeare in particular. -This program has proven ideal for unwilling readers and students with special needs who may struggle in a regular classroom setting. The residency experience opens unexpected pathways into language for these students. -Partnership with the classroom teachers has included the creation of creative writing assignments, Shakespeare Journals, special art projects, research presentations based on the play, and even interactive Shakespeare blogs; all while meeting key components of the Common Core Standards.
THE MINI RESIDENCY: Shakespeare Intensive Residency
-This second model uses a smaller portion of text (a short scene or monologue) and takes place over two to five class sessions with a smaller group of students; usually 15–30 students -The same basic skills for reading, speaking and performing the text are introduced as with the full-length residency. -The script-in-hand presentations for this Mini Residency have included the opening street scene from Romeo and Juliet, the senate scene from Julius Caesar and the fairy kingdom feud from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Both of these programs are ideal forums in which students are not only excited about the classics, but it also provides them with the opportunity to make Shakespeare their own.

Founded in 1963 by Paul Barry and Philip Dorian, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is the State’s largest professional theatre company dedicated to Shakespeare’s canon and other world classics. Now in its 51st season, the Theatre is one of the leading Shakespeare theatres in the nation, and the longest-running on the East Coast. THE SHAKESPEARE THEATRE OF NEW JERSEY BONNIE J. MONTE is now in her 23rd season as the company’s Artistic Director. Under her leadership, the Theatre has evolved into one of the largest and most respected classical theatres in the nation. Ms. Monte has garnered national recognition for her highly successful revitalization of the institution, and for her outstanding commitment to arts education and professional training. Ms. Monte has made The Shakespeare Theatre one of the nation’s leading training grounds for emerging classic theatre artists. During her more than two decades at the helm, the institution successfully completed a major capital campaign resulting in the complete renovation and expansion of the F. M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre in 1998, and in 2002, the Theatre’s 40th anniversary year, she initiated a new partnership with the College of Saint Elizabeth, attaining a second performance venue for the organization: the Outdoor Stage, a unique and stunning Greek amphitheatre. That same year, The Star-Ledger named the company “Regional Theatre of the Year,” and The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation awarded The Shakespeare Theatre a prestigious Strategic Partnership Grant in the amount of $1 million. In its January 2003 issue, New Jersey Monthly named Ms. Monte one of “40 New Jerseyans We Love.” She has received numerous awards and honors including a Women of Achievement Award, sponsored by the New Jersey General Assembly; an Alumni Achievement Award from Bethany College in West Virginia; and a Person of the Year Award from the National Society of Arts and Letters, for her longtime efforts to nurture young artists. She has also been named Professional Artist of the Year by the Arts Council of the Morris Area, and one of the 25 Most Influential People in the Arts in New Jersey by The Star-Ledger. Prior to arriving in New Jersey, Ms. Monte was a casting director at the prestigious Manhattan Theatre Club in New York City. From 1981 to 1989, she was Associate Artistic Director at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, working closely with renowned Artistic Director Nikos Psacharopoulos. While there, Ms. Monte helped initiate and implement many new programs, including a second stage and an outdoor free theatre. In 1982, she was part of a writing team, which included Psacharopoulos and Tennessee Williams, collaborating on Tennessee Williams: A Celebration, a major retrospective tribute to
Mr. Williams’ entire literary canon. During her tenure at Williamstown, Ms. Monte also cast and helped produce joint ventures with other major theatres, including Sweet Bird of Youth at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway at Circle-in-theSquare, The Glass Menagerie at The Long Wharf Theatre, and Arms and the Man at The Pasadena Playhouse. Since 1990, she has directed over 50 productions for The Shakespeare Theatre, including stagings of numerous Shakespeare plays, as well as a number of plays from the Russian classic canon with a focus on Chekov and Ostrovsky. Her special affinity for Tennessee Williams has resulted in highly acclaimed productions of A Streetcar Named Desire, Camino Real and Sweet Bird of Youth. She also directed shows for the Theatre’s Shakespeare LIVE! touring company including The Myths of Ancient Greece: Old Echoes, New Ears, which she also authored. She has created a number of original translations/ adaptations for the company’s main and outdoor stages, including Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Marivaux’s The Triumph of Love, Pirandello’s Enrico IV, Ostrovsky’s Artists and Admirers, Maeterlinck’s The Blue Bird, Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days, and Goldoni’s The Servant of Two Masters, which was recently published by Playscripts, Inc. Ms. Monte has been actively involved in the training of new talent for the American stage through numerous training programs for over 30 years, and has also engaged in residencies at the University of South Carolina, where she directed The Trojan Women, and the University of Notre Dame, where she directed The Bacchae. She has been on the faculty of Drew University and The New School in Manhattan. Ms. Monte obtained a postgraduate conservatory degree in directing from The Hartman Conservatory and a B.A. in theatre from Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia. She has Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees from Drew University and the College of Saint Elizabeth. She is originally from Stamford, Connecticut.

MARION ADLER (Mrs. Gibbs) is in her third season with The Shakespeare Theatre. Company credits: The Winter’s Tale, Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as the musical Enter the Guardsman for which she wrote the lyrics. At Shakespeare Santa Cruz for three seasons she appeared in Loves Labours Lost, Othello, The Man in the Iron Mask, Henry IV, Part Two, and Henry V. Other Shakespeare roles include King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, As You Like It, and Twelfth Night (Stratford Festival of Canada). GLENN BEATTY (Professor Willard/ A Man Among the Dead) is in his second season with The Shakespeare Theatre. Company credit: Northumberland in Henry IV, Part One. Glenn trained at University of California, Santa Barbara (BFA) and Southern Methodist University (MFA). He made his television debut in 2010 in an episode of A&E’s docudrama series, The Fugitive Chronicles. In 2011, he won a Telly Award for directing The Power to Change Lives, a corporate film about bringing electricity to rural areas in India and Tanzania for the first time. He has understudied and performed for the Pearl Theatre Company in The Mandrake and most recently covered the roles of Henry IV, Worchester, and Mistress Quickly for their production of Henry the IV, Part 1 last winter. He adapted the text, and played the title role of Cyrano de Bergerac for the Hudson Warehouse in Manhattan, and has worked for various other NYC theater companies. He is a graduate of Wayne State University. EDWARD MCENEANEY (Mr. Carter) is in his first season with The Shakespeare Theatre. He has performed at Arena Repertory Theater on Long Island in Threepenny Opera, The Playboy of the Western World, and over twenty other productions. ABOUT THORNTON WILDER
Born in Madison, Wisconsin, and educated at Yale and Princeton, Thornton Wilder (18971975) was an accomplished novelist and playwright whose works explore the connection between the commonplace and the cosmic dimensions of human experience. The Bridge of San Luis Rey, one of his seven novels, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928, and his next-to-last novel, The Eighth Day received the National Book Award (1968). Two of his four major plays garnered Pulitzer Prizes, Our Town (1938) and The Skin of Our Teeth (1943). His play, The Matchmaker ran on Broadway for 486 performances (1955-1957), and was later adapted into the record-breaking musical Hello, Dolly! Wilder also enjoyed enormous success with many other forms of the written and spoken word, among them translation, acting, opera librettos, lecturing, teaching and film (his screenplay Thornton Wilder for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1943 psycho-thriller, Shadow of a Source: Beinecke Library Doubt has become a classic). Letter writing held a central place in Wilder’s life, and since his death, three volumes of his letters have been published. Wilder’s many honors include the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the National Book Committee’s Medal for Literature. On April 17, 1997, the centenary of his birth, the US Postal Service unveiled the Thornton Wilder 32-cent stamp in Hamden, Connecticut, his official address after 1930 and where he died on December 7, 1975. Wilder continues to be read and performed around the world. Our Town is performed at least once each day somewhere in this country, with his other major dramas and shorter plays not far behind. In 2008, Our Town and The Bridge of San Luis Rey were selected as a joint choice for the NEA’s “Big Read” Program. In recent years Wilder’s works have also inspired a growing number of adaptations, among them an opera based on Our Town (music by Ned Rorem, libretto by J.D. McClatchy) and a dramatized version of his novel, Theophilus North (Matt Burnett). In response to the renewed interest in Wilder, the Thornton Wilder Society sponsored the first international conference on Wilder in fall 2008.

“Very ordinary town, if you ask me…” “Our Town evades every possible requirement of the legitimate stage. It is pure description, entirely devoid of anything even resembling conflict, expectation or action, which are usually considered the component parts of any play.”
“Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it?— every, every minute?” “Our Town is not offered as a picture of life in a New Hampshire village: or as a speculation about the conditions of life after death (that element I merely took from Wilder as the Stage Manager. Dante’s Purgatory). It is an attempt to find a Source: Beinecke Library value above all price for the smallest events in our daily life. I have made the claim as preposterous as possible, for I have set the village against the largest dimensions of time and place. The recurrent words in the play (few have noticed it) are ‘hundreds,’ ‘thousands,’ and ‘millions.’ Emily’s joys and griefs, her algebra lessons and her birthday and her birthday present — what are they when we consider all the billions of girls who have lived, who are living and who will live? Each individual’s assertion to an absolute reality can only be inner, very inner. “It goes so fast. We don’t have time to look at one another…” I have had the good fortune to direct several great American classics for the stage here at The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, but I can honestly say that none of them have affected me quite like Our Town. I was the Assistant to the Artistic Director when Our Town was produced here in 1996 with such wonderful company members as Dylan Baker, Edmond Genest, and Paul Mullins. It had a profound impact on me as a young artist and I’m honored to help bring this play to life here again during this, the 75th anniversary of Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning work. When I first saw Our Town it taught me one of the great lessons any director can hope to learn; how much can be accomplished in a theatre with the spoken word and little else. No matter how well I think I know this play, or how many times I read it or watch it, it still leaves me reeling. Every time I think I know the play, I see it anew. As the Stage Manager so deftly reveals, we are helpless against the powers of nature and time. So perhaps the best and most important thing we can do is truly be with each other, and appreciate what we have, or rather, who we have; to notice, and appreciate life just a bit more as we live it. That is the gift that Grover’s Corners has given me and I have been a little happier for it. I wish the same for you.
