THE SHAKESPEARE THEATRE OF NEW JERSEY BONNIE J. MONTE is now in her 24th season as the company’s Artistic Director. Under her leadership, the Theatre has evolved into one of the largest and most respected classical theatres in the nation. Ms. Monte has garnered national recognition for her highly successful revitalization of the institution, and for her outstanding commitment to arts education and professional training. The Shakespeare Theatre has become one of the nation’s leading training grounds for emerging classic theatre artists. During her more than two decades at the helm, the institution successfully completed a major capital campaign resulting in the complete renovation and expansion of the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre in 1998. She is currently working on The Legacy Project, the Theatre’s new campaign to perfect and protect the institution’s future. In 2002, the Theatre’s 40th anniversary year, she initiated a new partnership with the College of Saint Elizabeth, attaining a second summer performance venue for the organization: the Outdoor Stage, a unique and stunning Greek amphitheatre on St. Elizabeth’s campus. That same year, The Star-Ledger named the company “Regional Theatre of the Year,” and The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation awarded The Shakespeare Theatre a prestigious Strategic Partnership Grant in the amount of $1 million. In its January 2003 issue, New Jersey Monthly named Ms. Monte one of “40 New Jerseyans We Love.” She has received numerous awards and honors including a Women of Achievement Award, sponsored by the New Jersey General Assembly; an Alumni Achievement Award from Bethany College in West Virginia; and a Person of the Year Award from the National Society of Arts and Letters, for her longtime efforts to nurture young artists. She has also been named Professional Artist of the Year by the Arts Council of the Morris Area, and one of the 25 Most Influential People in the Arts in New Jersey by The Star-Ledger. Prior to arriving in New Jersey, Ms. Monte was a casting director at the prestigious Manhattan Theatre Club in New York City. From 1981 to 1989, she was Associate Artistic Director at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, working closely with renowned Artistic Director Nikos Psacharopoulos. While there, Ms. Monte initiated many new programs, including a second stage and an outdoor free theatre. In 1982, she was part of a writing team, which

included Psacharopoulos and Tennessee Williams, collaborating on Tennessee Williams: A Celebration, a major retrospective tribute to Mr. Williams’ entire literary canon. During her tenure at Williamstown, Ms. Monte also cast and helped produce joint ventures with other major theatres, including Sweet Bird of Youth at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway at Circle-in-the-Square, The Glass Menagerie at The Long Wharf Theatre, and Arms and the Man at The Pasadena Playhouse. Since 1990, she has directed over 50 productions for The Shakespeare Theatre, including stagings of numerous Shakespeare plays, as well as work from the Russian classic canon with a focus on Chekhov and Ostrovsky. Her special affinity for Tennessee Williams has resulted in highly acclaimed productions of A Streetcar Named Desire, Camino Real and Sweet Bird of Youth. She also directed shows for the Theatre’s Shakespeare LIVE! touring company including The Myths of Ancient Greece: Old Echoes, New Ears, which she also authored. She has created a number of original translations/ adaptations for the company’s Main and Outdoor stages, including Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Marivaux’s The Triumph of Love, Pirandello’s Enrico IV, Ostrovsky’s Artists and Admirers, Maeterlinck’s The Blue Bird, Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days, Goldoni’s The Servant of Two Masters, which was published by Playscripts, Inc, and this year’s The Alchemist. Ms. Monte has been actively involved in the training of new talent for the American stage through numerous training programs for over 30 years, and has also engaged in residencies at the University of South Carolina, where she directed The Trojan Women, and the University of Notre Dame, where she directed The Bacchae. She has been on the faculty of Drew University and The New School in Manhattan. Ms. Monte obtained a post-graduate conservatory degree in directing from The Hartman Conservatory and a B.A. in theatre from Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia. She has Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees from Drew University and the College of Saint Elizabeth. She is originally from Stamford, Connecticut.

“The artist appeals to that part of our being which is not dependent on wisdom; to that in us which is a gift and not an acquisition — and, therefore, more permanently enduring. He speaks to our capacity for delight and wonder, to the sense of mystery surrounding our lives; to our sense of pity, and beauty, and pain.”

- Joseph Conrad

THE SHAKESPEARE THEATRE OF NEW JERSEY

Director’s Notes Like all of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, The Tempest overflows with themes and ideas that, for a director, present a dilemma of abundance. There are so many directions one can take the play, both thematically and visually, that the pre-production process often becomes overwhelming, for we cannot throw onto the stage, in the short space of two hours, the infinite universe of ideas suggested by the play and its characters. Each director must create a cohesive series of focus points and conceptual parameters for the particular production on which they are working, or risk losing the play and the audience in the maelstrom of rich fabric offered up by the playwright. Being the Artistic Director of a Shakespeare theatre has given me a slight advantage in this honing down process for I have had the privilege and opportunity to experiment and think about the play over a very long period of time. Indeed, it was the play with which I made my “debut” here at The Shakespeare Theatre more than 23 years ago. That first production was a critical success that served well the goal of making a splash as the new Artistic Director; but for me, the chief merit of the production was that it profoundly informed me about the complicated odyssey on which I would have to embark if I was to leap into waters of Shakespeare’s complex ocean with the life-long goal of learning to navigate his waters well and with expertise. And more specifically, that 1991 production taught me what not to do with The Tempest next time round. Subsequent viewings of other directors’ productions of the play afforded me the chance to continue to contemplate the perils of this particular piece and how best to approach it when the next opportunity arose for me. Much of what you will see on stage tonight exemplifies those years of thought about the play, and I hope my musings will, as Prospero says, “please.” There are many things that set The Tempest apart from Shakespeare’s other plays, and while I think that it joins the rest of the canon in embodying the singular thematic obsession that lies at the heart of all of his work – the issue of balance – it pushes many of his other signature characteristics to new heights. For one, I think that it is the most “noisy” of all his plays. I use that word in the sense that it is noise-laden – a veritable symphony of luscious words, music, constant sounds that emanate from the natural world and from sources far more mysterious; there seems to be a sense of underscoring for almost every moment of the play. It also feels far more overtly autobiographical than his other work, and while I think that we can track Shakespeare’s life and his ever-evolving thoughts, moods, and philosophies over the course of the canon, this one feels very personal. Perhaps we would not feel so were it not his last great masterpiece. Only Henry VIII comes after, and much of that seems written by another playwright. There is no question that the play evokes the workings of a mind that knows its short time on earth is drawing near its final act.

THE SHAKESPEARE THEATRE OF NEW JERSEY There is such a feast of ideas, themes, concepts, provocative notions, conflicting philosophies, rich characters, and imaginative possibilities that lie within the pages of The Tempest that it would take a lifetime to explore them all. To even begin to discuss them in my short allowance of space here would be futile. The great Italian director Giorgio Strehler spent his life obsessing over this one play, and worked on it over and over for decades, attempting to create the perfect production. So, in these short notes, I will simply share with you my overriding goal for this particular production, a goal that is akin to my ever-evolving work on Macbeth. Perhaps the best way to explain it is to describe my frustration over the huge pitfall that The Tempest (and Macbeth) presents to directors, and that every production I have ever seen has fallen prey to, including my own first attempt many years ago. Because the play is dripping with magic, supernatural events, and an otherworldly characters, each production I have witnessed becomes a kind of parade of one special effect after another – we blatantly see the attempt of the director and designers to create a never-ending spectacle of unusual devices and tricks to outdo previous productions, themselves, and Shakespeare; they work hard to wow the audience with a cornucopia of magical machinations. Therefore, so often, the agonized and beautiful heart of the play get lost. It becomes swallowed up and consumed by effects, and we are left disappointed that the play did not touch us as it should – that all it amounts to is an “insubstantial pageant.” The important tempest of the play is not the storm at sea, but the tempest that rages in Prospero’s breast. When we let his very real turmoil become consumed by the false, theatrical turmoil we create with “toys,” we let the real play sink into a whirlpool of trickery. Having said that, I do not deny that the play is filled with magic of many sorts and one cannot ignore that fact nor fail to serve up a significant dose of magic if one is to serve the play in total. I have tried to make the magic as organic and elemental as possible so that we become far less aware of its artificiality. I have attempted to construct a world where the magic is so natural that we suspend our disbelief easily and quickly. Once that is accomplished, we can focus on the true issues of the play and we are not repeatedly taken out of its reality by our thoughts on how a particular special effect was accomplished. I have, therefore, taken many radical liberties with this production. Those who know the play well will see where I have done so. Lastly, scholars and practitioners alike seem to frequently declare that the characters are two-dimensional and that they simply serve the pageantry, the ideas, and the glorious poetry of the play, and so that is what they focus on. I disagree, and I hope that my years of observing and studying the play will pay off so that I can release both the piece itself and its characters from the manacles of cheap magic that so often bind it and hide its deep, inner light – which is its real magic – from our too-often, spectacle-stuffed eyes.

Spotlight on Education The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is a leader in arts education, offering a wide variety of interdisciplinary programs for students, educators, artists-in-training, and the general public. We integrate education and learning into all our endeavors, while promoting literacy, a culture of enlightenment, a dedication to excellence, and a keen awareness of how the arts are a necessity to the health of the collective mind and soul of any great civilization.

THE SHAKESPEARE CORPS:

Born out of a desire to continue working with students who had participated in our original after-school programs, The Shakespeare Corps began more than 16 years ago. We offer all of our Shakespeare Corps students the same training ideals and concepts we instill in our Summer Professional Training Program students and our acting company— including the core values of ensemble, bringing life to the text, and storytelling. Our Shakespeare Corps students aren’t just campers; they are company members. In fact, a number of our Shakespeare Corps alumni have gone on to work with us at every level of training we offer, up to and including our Main Stage. Aside from the obvious benefits to the up-and-coming performer, participation in one of our Shakespeare Corps programs can boost confidence, critical thinking, reading and public speaking skills, all while helping to demystify Shakespeare, not just on stage, but in the classroom as well. Members of the Shakespeare Corps participate in daily classes under the direction of The Shakespeare Theatre’s education staff and meet with The Theatre’s professional resident artists in master classes and discussions. Each day is varied, fast-paced, and exciting!

THE JUNIOR CORPS (AGES 11-14): LATE-JUNE — JULY

The Junior Corps is an affordable two-week summer acting program for all types of kids. With a focus on the ensemble, each session culminates in a final Saturday presentation that involves the entire group in retelling a piece of classic literature through performance.

THE SENIOR CORPS (AGES 14-18):

LATE-JUNE — AUGUST

The Senior Corps is an affordable three-week summer acting intensive for teens who are serious about growing as performers. Building on the skills introduced at the Junior Corps level, the Senior Corps features a special focus on Shakespeare and the individual actor. Each session culminates in a final Saturday presentation of Shakespearean text.
