Worship Services

Traditions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Connect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four -fold service of gathering, praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Freedom At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.


VBS Volunteers - VBS Food Truck Crew 2022! - Sarah Hicks, our new Children's Director, wants to get to know those faces that have helped with VBS in the past! If you want to be part of the VBS volunteer team in any aspect, please email children@shalimar-umc.org or call (850) 6510721 to get put on the VBS update list! She wants to meet all of you!

Welcome Abigail Denney! - We want to welcome our newest staff member to the church, Abigail Denney, who is handling our church media and communications here at Shalimar UMC. Abigail graduated from UWF with a Bachelors degree in Communication. She also grew up here at Shalimar UMC in our youth group and this church has a special place in her heart. She is excited about connecting people with Jesus through authentic engagement with our church body and helping our pastors communicate His love. We are excited for her to be here.

Philip’s Focus Our Story Karen and I have been married 37 years. Our meeting and marriage all started at Shalimar UMC. As a part of our anniversary last week, Karen wrote an account of our marriage story. In this story, Shalimar UMC had a prominent role in our meeting and marriage together. In this Beacon, we are sharing part of our story with you from Karen’s perspective: “May 4, 1985, at 4:00 pm I walked the aisle of Shalimar United Methodist Church to say, “I do.” Thirty-seven years later we are defying the odds and here we are, still married and serving at the same church where it all began. When Philip and I sat in Lamar Brown’s office, which is now Philip’s office, asking him if he would officiate at our wedding, he was determined to speak wisdom over our overzealous choice to marry after only knowing each other for two weeks. We met in November of 1984 and wanted to get married in May, only six months later. Everyone thought we were jumping in too fast. But we declared it was love at first sight and why wait when you know. Young love is blind, and I am so glad it is. Over 400 people filled the sanctuary traveling from all over the country to witness this unexpected event. Some folks in the church today attended our wedding, firsthand accounts can be verified! I graduated from college and moved back home in August and Philip had been serving as associate pastor for two years before I showed up at Shalimar. One Sunday in November we spied each other in the sanctuary, he in


the chancel area and I in the pew. It was love at first sight. And we were determined to seal the deal on this love connection. The day of our wedding Philip was dressed in a black tux with tails and I in the perfect lace gown with a train half the size of Lady Diana’s, but still it trailed down the aisle like I was a future queen. We had 3 ministers preside at our wedding. Philip was big on making sure everyone and everything was done with attention to protocol. Rev. Lamar Brown, the Senior Pastor, Rev. Clifford Abbott the District Superintendent, and his brother, David, a United Methodist pastor oversaw tying the knot. They did a good job! We had a traditional Methodist ceremony followed by cake, finger sandwiches, and punch in the fellowship hall which is now the music suite. The ladies of the church hosted most of the reception while my dad paid the bill. Betty Johnson, Betty McLain, Nancy Dyess, and several others cooked whole chickens and made chicken salad along with pimento cheese. Never a southern wedding in 1980 omitted pimento cheese finger sandwiches. Some of the girls from the youth group served punch (Marnie Johnson Meek, Melanie McClain Griggs, Sharon Freathy Segars, Elicia Bethea, Kim Kwasigroh Burks, and others. Al Truby also catered a rehearsal dinner from his former restaurant Gulf Seafood. There were so many people, so much love and blissfulness. The most memorable comment from a church member from one of Philip’s former churches said, “We have been praying for you for so long.” She explained that she and her friends were praying for Philip to find a wife and they all came to witness their answered prayers. Many thought it would never work because we did not know one another. It would have probably been easier if we had waited but we may have never married if we had known what we know now. We are like puzzle pieces, greatly different but pointless without the other. We were ordained to be together for better or worse and we are sticking to those vows until we die. I’m so glad I said, “I do” on May 4, 1985, to the most patient, even keeled, kind, Godly man. He accepted me with all my jaded past and loved me as we grew together following God’s plan for our lives. I thank God, he chose you for me. We have defied the odds and are still loving each other despite all the people who tried to speak wisdom over us. I’m so glad we followed God’s lead and didn’t listen to the advice of others. When you know, you know!” (Written by Karen McVay). Well, if you did not know, now you do. Did I not out kick my coverage thirty-seven years ago? What an unbelievable blessing to be married to Karen. Sundays Worship and Bible | 9:30am & 11:00am Dear Family, At Food Truck Party VBS, your students will enjoy an interactive, energizing, Bible-based good time as they get on a roll with God. They will become Chefs and discover how we can turn to God in prayer every day to meet our needs and how we can join God in providing for the needs of others. After a high-energy Opening Assembly time, the Chefs make their way to the Bible Story Station. Interactive Bible lessons reveal Daily Specials to equip your Chefs for an active life with God. Your Chefs will also discover our Main Course (Bible memory verse), which will remain with them in their faith long after VBS. The students will expand on what they’ve discovered by making their own art projects at the Craft Station, singing new songs at the Music Station, exploring the wonders of God’s creation at the Science Station, playing games at the Recreation Station, and enjoying tasty treats at the Snack Station. Along the way, the Chefs will hear about our mission project as their response to a call for action! Join us as we get on a roll with God at the Food Truck Party! Registration is now open for our 2022 Shalimar UMC Vacation Bible School and the theme this year is "Food Truck Party!" Blessings for Children Praise God for You Who Pack our Lunch I love the Upper Room devotional, and my Bible is stuffed with devotions pulled from it over the years that have spoken to me - spirit, body, and soul. One in particular, from January 8, 2022, by Inger Logelin, where she lifted up the story of the feeding of the multitudes in a way that shouted to me about the ministries and missions our church undertakes, and in particular our Blessings for Children ministry. Ms. Logelin said she “wondered about the one who prepared the boy’s lunch.” Yes, Ms. Logelin! Those behind the scenes who do what they do (pray, give, make, take, write, donate, call) so that those who share “in the field” will have what is needed. The boy had a lunch prepared by someone at home that, in the hands of Jesus, would be used in a miracle! Every Wednesday, when we open our Blessings for Children doors, we serve the “lunch” that so many gracious giving others have prepared. The diapers, toothbrushes, school supplies, t-shirts, and all we can provide to those in need who God sends has been prepared behind the scenes by someone who has a heart for others and is probably not sure how their gift will be used, but believes it is needed and is given in love. God does the rest! Praise God for all those “behind the scenes!” And if you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size

4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lice treatment kits, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at


shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the our Cross Corner location behind the Family Life Center any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. •

Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly.

New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required.

A Request for Prayer In the upcoming months, it will be exciting to be a part of Shalimar UMC. Look in the Beacon and listen to the announcements on Sunday Mornings to see what events are upcoming. However, even doing that will not always give you a complete list because there is so much going on that the entire list cannot be covered in the space available in the Beacon and time available on Sunday mornings. This all leads me to the focus of this article. There is a great need for all of us to pray for Shalimar UMC, especially during these times. 50 churches in our conference have met and decided to bring in 50 new members each during the 50 days between Easter and Pentecost. That means it will take a lot of bold prayers for this to be accomplished. I am asking that everyone pray for SUMC to reach our goal. In addition to prayers for our 50 new members, I ask that 100 people come alongside the Prayer Team to pray for SUMC. (Pastors, events, and programs of the church) From time to time, I will send special prayer emphases by email for special prayers. If you would like to join us in this prayer effort, please email me at jamesbrantley3@cox.net. I will add you to the group. God has a plan for us. We need to pray to get in tune with what His plan is. There is no limit to what can be accomplished if we get aligned with His Vision. Read Ephesians 3:20-21

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Prayer Prayer Room The Prayer Room is always available for your use. The code to enter is 1423. After each Sunday morning service, someone will be present to pray with if you would like. They will also respect your wishes to pray alone. Prayer shawls are available for your use. The Prayer Box with cards is available for you to leave a request for either the pastors or Prayer Team. They will pray for you or a situation you would like lifted up. There have been great reports of use for this special place. Prayer Chain You can add someone to the Prayer Chain, share an answered prayer or receive prayer requests and praises through email. We are excited to announce the prayer list can now be accessed on the website or app. Please call the office for the password to this page.
