As a married couple they have both examplified the absolute best in osppitality to al. With Dianne greeting people with a big smile every Sunday at 11:07 and Ralph preparing coffee before events, we couldn’t imagine two people more deserving than Ralph and Dianne Johnson. PATRIOTIC CELEBRATION MUSICAL On Sunday, July 3rd, at all four of our Worship Services we will celebrate the men and women who fight for our country. PHILIP’S FOCUS “Annual Conference Meets this Week.” Our 2022 session of the Alabama-West Florida Annual Conference met this week in Montgomery. This was the first year the Annual Conference has met in person since 2019. Lay and Clergy delegates from over 550 churches of our Conference gathered to conduct the business of Annual Conference. We met on the campus of Alabama State University. In case you d o not know, our Annual Conference region spans geographically through most of the southern half of Alabama and the majority of the panhandle of Florida. We are led by our episcopal leader Bishop David Graves. Bishop Graves now serves two Annual Conferences including the South Georgia Conference and our Alabama-West Florida Conference. Shalimar UMC had eight delegates representing us in voting and attendance. Our lay delegates are Mark Bethea, Dave Biggars, Jim Brantley, Pat Gross. Our alternates Pat Brantley and Ron Gross were also in attendance. Our clergy also were present for the proceedings including Brad Bradford, David Garvin, Matt Langford, and Philip McVay. We are grateful for all our delegates who took the time to travel to Montgomery and represent our congregation this week. (You can see a photo below of the Shalimar UMC delegation). We just concluded Annual Conference today (June 15, 2022) and will have a more detailed summary of the Annual Conference in the coming weeks. In the short term, you would be interested to know our former associate pastor Rev. Faith Parry as an Elder in the United Method-
ist Church. Faith will continue to serve in the Florida Conference this year. Rev. Brian Dale, also a former Associate Pastor officially retired. In retirement, Brian will serve the Wewahitchka UMC as a part time pastor this year. You may be interested to know that there are no changes in our pastoral appointments at Shalimar UMC. Us itinerate pastors Rev. Matt Langford and I (Dr. Philip McVay) were both reappointed to Shalimar UMC for the coming year. Dr. Brad Bradford (though not itinerate) is reappointed in his role as worship pastor. Rev. David Garvin (also not itinerate) continues as a Deacon in the United Methodist Church his role as Youth Minister. We are pleased to have this continuity and look forward to what God will do through the congregation of Shalimar UMC the coming year! A Request for Prayer In the upcoming months, it will be exciting to be a part of Shalimar UMC. Look in the Beacon and listen to the announcements on Sunday mornings to see what events are occurring. However, even doing that will not always give you the whole rundown because there is so much going on that the entire list cannot be covered in the space available in the Beacon and time available on Sunday mornings. This all leads me to the focus of this article. There is a great need for all of us to pray for Shalimar UMC, especially during these times. 50 churches in our conference have met and decided to bring in 50 new members each during the 50 days between Easter and Pentecost. That means it will take a lot of bold prayers for this to be accomplished. I am asking that everyone pray for SUMC to reach our goal. In addition to prayers for our 50 new members, I ask that 100 people come alongside the Prayer Team to pray for SUMC (Pastors, events, and programs of the church). From time to time, I will send special prayer emphases by email for special prayers. If you would like to join us in this prayer effort, please email me at jamesbrantley3@cox.net. I will add you to the group. God has a plan for us. We need to pray to get in tune with what His plan is. There is no limit to what can be accomplished if we get aligned with His Vision. Read Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! PRAYER Prayer Room The Prayer Room is always available for your use. The code to enter is 1423. After each Sunday morning service, someone will be present to pray with, if you would like. They will also respect your wishes to pray alone. Prayer shawls are available for your use. The Prayer Box with cards is available for you to leave a request for either the Pastors or Prayer Team. They will pray for you or a situation you would like lifted up. There have been great reports of use for this special place.
Prayer Chain You can add someone to the Prayer Chain, share an answered prayer or receive prayer requests and praises through email. Military Members (Active Duty, Reserve, Retired) Needed for Patriotic Service During our four patriotic worship services (8, 9:30, 11, & 11:07) on Sunday, July 3rd, we need uniformed military members as flag bearers for their representative services so we can participate in honoring those who fight for our country. Blessings for Children Reading is a Gift!
There is a quote by Kate Dicamillo, “Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered as a precious gift.” When Blessings for Children began 4 years ago, in addition to needed items we would provide for children, our founding group of volunteers determined that books would always be a part of what this ministry would share. We established that we would always have adult and children’s Bibles and Bible stories in our bookshelves for each family and their children to have for themselves. So just as we use our Mission budget allocation and our church family’s gracious financial donations to purchase the diapers and other new items we share each week, we also buy Bibles and Christian stories and activity books so that the word of God is accessible to every family and child that our ministry serves. But in addition to our provided Christian offerings we also wanted to be sure that other types of books would be available to the children….putting into practice the idea that reading should be offered as a gift. So since our beginnings we have collected all kinds of children’s books to have an overflowing book bin with books that run the gamut of children’s interests. We wanted to share the love of reading with children as the gift it is and are asking for your help to continue to do so. Right now we find our book bin of children’s books running dry and would like to ask you to please consider donating books that your children or grandchildren may have outgrown to our Blessings for Children ministry. We serve children infant through 5th grades so any and all books that fall into that age group would be joyfully received and very much appreciated!
If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need through Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: Please pray for the ministry and all who participate and watch for families you can refer to us for assistance. Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size 4, 5 & 6 in particular) disposable pull-ups, wipes, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, school supplies, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, children’s books,lice treatment kits and toilet paper. You can donate by stopping by our Cross Corner location behind the Family Life Center any Wednesday from 11:30AM - 3:30PM. Children’s Bibles and Bible stories are always a joy to receive along with Spanish language Bibles. A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome with no regular commitment required.
