OFF THE WALL: NEW SERMON SERIES Starting July 10th is our new sermon series, “Off The Wall.” This series takes a closer look at the passages of scripture that are used for decorating and making a great Facebook post. These verses are far more than just good sayings to encourage us; they help us better understand God. Join us as we read and work through some Old Testament passages to see them in a new light that can make a difference in our life today. OAKWOOD 2022 Our summer camp offers students who have completed 6th-12th grades to join us for an incredible week at Blue Lake Camp. Oakwood is from July 11th-15th. PHILIP’S FOCUS “What a great month for Shalimar UMC!” Shalimar United Methodist Church turns 71 years old this month. We began in the Florida Drive Inn concession stand. The 20 or so people that gathered for an organizational service in 1951 would be amazed how much happened in just one month 71 years later! The world has changed quite a bit since 1951. And the challenges of the last years have been unparalleled. Yet…Shalimar UMC remains both strong and vibrant in worship, programs, and mission. Even a two-year pandemic could not dismantle the wonderful ministry growing out of the corner of Meigs and Old Ferry. Our month of June has been loaded with impactful and special events. What are some of the highlights of the month of June? We moved into June adding new members at the fastest pace in many years. This growth was highlighted through receiving 55 new members in 50 Days as we observed Pentecost Sunday. And best of all we are continuing to add new members throughout the month. Summer Camp has had the most children ever. This includes 110 kids registered and an average attendance of 80-90 kids each week. Thank you Dawn Rozofsky for your great leadership! As I am writing this article, we have 19 students and 7 adults on a 10-day youth choir tour. The good news of the “love God and love people” theme is being spread to people in Pennsylvania, New York City, Tennessee, and Shalimar, Florida this year. Earlier this month we had Vacation Bible School. The “Food Truck Party” was a rolling in the location as the Florida Drive Inn Concession Stand. Our successful VBS included well over 200 kids and 60 volunteers.
Our “Starry, Starry, Night Event” raised over $27,000 for missions! This special night placed an exclamation point on some of the missions and ministry of Shalimar UMC. This includes three days a week with Bread House, every Wednesday with Blessings for Children, and two days a week with our newest ministry Joyful Place. What a difference we are making for our community! Our Reboot ministry completed another online class and is in the process of finishing another Reboot Advance Class in June. A Healed class is starting in Niceville at the CALM Center. They also hosted a Reboot Baby Shower. This shower gathered graduates who witnessed to 35 of their families and friends about the healing that allowed them to come together…as husbands, wives, and now parents. It was a great month! We are grateful to Deb Hutto and Jeanne Racquier for their wonderful leadership of Reboot. The month of June still has a week left. We will have a church gathering this Sunday, June 26, 5pm, at Beasley Park. In addition to the fellowship, we will have hamburgers and offer beach baptisms and reaffirmations of baptisms for all interested. What a great month June has been! In the upcoming months, it will be exciting to be a part of Shalimar UMC. Look in the Beacon and listen to the announcements on Sunday mornings to see what events are occurring. However, even doing that will not always give you the whole rundown because there is so much going on that the entire list cannot be covered in the space available in the Beacon and time available on Sunday mornings. God has a plan for us. We need to pray to get in tune with what His plan is. There is no limit to what can be accomplished if we get aligned with His Vision. Read Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! PRAYER Prayer Room The Prayer Room is always available for your use. The code to enter is 1423. After each Sunday morning service, someone will be present to pray with, if you would like. They will also respect your wishes to pray alone. Prayer shawls are available for your use. The Prayer Box with cards is available for you to leave a request for either the Pastors or Prayer Team. They will pray for you or a situation you would like lifted up. There have been great reports of use for this special place.
Prayer Chain You can add someone to the Prayer Chain, share an answered prayer or receive prayer requests and praises through email. Military Members (Active Duty, Reserve, Retired) Needed for Patriotic Service During our four patriotic worship services (8, 9:30, 11, & 11:07) on Sunday, July 3rd, we need uniformed military members as flag bearers for their representative services so we can participate in honoring those who fight for our country. Blessings for Children Reading is a Gift!
There is a quote by Kate Dicamillo, “Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered as a precious gift.” When Blessings for Children began 4 years ago, in addition to needed items we would provide for children, our founding group of volunteers determined that books would always be a part of what this ministry would share. We established that we would always have adult and children’s Bibles and Bible stories in our bookshelves for each family and their children to have for themselves. So just as we use our Mission budget allocation and our church family’s gracious financial donations to purchase the diapers and other new items we share each week, we also buy Bibles and Christian stories and activity books so that the word of God is accessible to every family and child that our ministry serves. But in addition to our provided Christian offerings we also wanted to be sure that other types of books would be available to the children….putting into practice the idea that reading should be offered as a gift. So since our beginnings we have collected all kinds of children’s books to have an overflowing book bin with books that run the gamut of children’s interests. We wanted to share the love of reading with children as the gift it is and are asking for your help to continue to do so. Right now we find our book bin of children’s books running dry and would like to ask you to please consider donating books that your children or grandchildren may have outgrown to our Blessings for Children ministry. We serve children infant through 5th grades so any and all books that fall into that age group would be joyfully received and very much appreciated!
If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need through Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: Please pray for the ministry and all who participate and watch for families you can refer to us for assistance. Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size 4, 5 & 6 in particular) disposable pull-ups, wipes, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, school supplies, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, children’s books,lice treatment kits and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate by stopping by our Cross Corner location behind the Family Life Center any Wednesday from 11:30AM - 3:30PM. Children’s Bibles and Bible stories are always a joy to receive along with Spanish language Bibles. A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome with no regular commitment required.
