OAKWOOD 2022 Our summer camp offers students who have completed 6th-12th grades to join us for an incredible week at Blue Lake Camp. Oakwood is from July 11th-15th. For more information contact our Youth Pastor, David Garvin at (850) 319-0072 or register online at www.shalimar-umc.org/oakwood22 KIDZ SUMMER CLUB Completed 3rd - 5th graders are invited to join Mrs. Sarah (our Children’s Ministry Director) and church friends for a week of summer camp at Blue Lake in Andalusia, Alabama. This is an opportunity for children to grow in their relationship with God through experiencing Bible stories and faith sharing, as well as connect with their church friends during activities such as swimming, canoeing, having s’mores, hiking, games and more! NEW SERMON SERIES: OFF THE WALL Starting July 10th is our new sermon series, “Off The Wall.” This will be our Old Testament sermon series where we will look at some of the famous passages that we use as bookmarks, decorations, and Facebook posts. We will see that they are more than nice sayings, they can help us encounter God. FINANCIAL PEACE CLASS We are excited to offer Financial Peace University from Ramsey Solutions. This is a 9-week course that will begin on Wednesday, July 13th. They will meet following fellowship dinner from 6-7:30PM upstairs in the FLC. The course fee is $75. We would encourage all who have yet to be a part of this class to reach out to the church office for more information.

PHILIP’S FOCUS “We Move from a Great June to a Sizzling July” As I wrote last week, we had a tremendous June in the life of Shalimar UMC! Well…July should be great too! In fact, in addition to the summer heat, July should provide a spiritual sizzle! This Sunday, July 3, we will have our outstanding patriotic musical. The special services will be in the sanctuary at 8:00 AM, 9:30 AM, and 11:00 AM. We will hear patriotic songs and music from our chancel choir and orchestra under the splendid direction of Dr. Brad Bradford. We will be inspired by the numerous volunteers in the worship, arts, and AV ministry that makes this special day possible. In observing these patriotic services at Shalimar UMC, I am still amazed at the large attendance. I still marvel at the foresight of Rev. Jerry Hollis, decades ago, to begin this tradition of patriotic services on the Sunday nearest July 4th. When I was the Senior Pastor of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Pensacola years ago, I used to keep up with Shalimar through reading the Beacon. I was so curious as to how in the world Shalimar UMC attracted such an exceptional crowd on the 4th of July weekend. Now, I know. We are blessed to have this tradition and such a vibrant worship and music ministry! If you are active or retired military, you are invited to wear your uniform. Also, on Sunday, at 11:07, I will be preaching one of my favorite passages from Isaiah 40:31… “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.” This will be a sermon that deals
with something we all need but most lack! PATIENCE!!! Speaking of favorite Bible verses…what is your favorite Bible verse? Do you have inspiring verses of Scripture on your wall at home? This is where Matt and I came up with the idea of our new Summer Series called “Off the Wall.” This series begins July 10. We are going to be preaching from popular Old Testament passages that might very well be hanging on the walls of your homes. The upcoming passages will include Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 which teaches there is a time and season for everything. Proverbs 3:5-6 which teaches about trusting the Lord with all your heart. Also, we will be preaching on Joshua 24:15 “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” We will be seeking God’s blessing in preaching Numbers 6:24-26. On our final week, we will preach from Jeremiah 29:11 which reads “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” I am so looking forward to our upcoming worship services at Shalimar UMC! The forecast calls for there to be heat in July and I am anticipating the sizzling summer will continue at Shalimar UMC! Shalom, Philip

A Request for Prayer In the upcoming months, it will be exciting to be a part of Shalimar UMC. Look in the Beacon and listen to the announcements on Sunday mornings to see what events are occurring. However, even doing that will not always give you the whole rundown because there is so much going on that the entire list cannot be covered in the space available in the Beacon and time available on Sunday mornings.
God has a plan for us. We need to pray to get in tune with what His plan is. There is no limit to what can be accomplished if we get aligned with His Vision. Read Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! PRAYER Prayer Room The Prayer Room is always available for your use. The code to enter is 1423. After each Sunday morning service, someone will be present to pray with, if you would like. They will also respect your wishes to pray alone. Prayer shawls are available for your use. The Prayer Box with cards is available for you to leave a request for either the Pastors or Prayer Team. They will pray for you or a situation you would like lifted up. There have been great reports of use for this special place.

Blessings for Children Reading is a Gift!
There is a quote by Kate Dicamillo, “Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered as a precious gift.” When Blessings for Children began 4 years ago, in addition to needed items we would provide for children, our founding group of volunteers determined that books would always be a part of what this ministry would share. We established that we would always have adult and children’s Bibles and Bible stories in our bookshelves for each family and their children to have for themselves. So just as we use our Mission budget allocation and our church family’s gracious financial donations to purchase the diapers and other new items we share each week, we also buy Bibles and Christian stories and activity books so that the word of God is accessible to every family and child that our ministry serves. But in addition to our provided Christian offerings we also wanted to be sure that other types of books would be available to the children….putting into practice the idea that reading should be offered as a gift. So since our beginnings we have collected all kinds of children’s books to have an overflowing book bin with books that run the gamut of children’s interests. We wanted to share the love of reading with children as the gift it is and are asking for your help to continue to do so. Right now we find our book bin of children’s books running dry and would like to ask you to please consider donating books that your children or grandchildren may have outgrown to our Blessings for Children ministry. We serve children infant through 5th grades so any and all books that fall into that age group would be joyfully received and very much appreciated!
If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need through Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: Please pray for the ministry and all who participate and watch for families you can refer to us for assistance. Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size 4, 5 & 6 in particular) disposable pull-ups, wipes, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, school supplies, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, children’s books,lice treatment kits and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate by stopping by our Cross Corner location behind the Family Life Center any Wednesday from 11:30AM - 3:30PM. Children’s Bibles and Bible stories are always a joy to receive along with Spanish language Bibles. A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome with no regular commitment required.
