Matt’s Message “Trust with all your Heart”
06
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. - Proverbs 3:5-6 -
Sunday, we look at another familiar verse to many. A verse that I think is much easier to say than to do! Trust in God over trusting in yourself alone, is a theme for all of chapter 3 of Proverbs, and it should be a theme in our own life. Yes, this is tough to do, but Moses pointed to the Commandments of God, the Prophets to the Word of God, the Writings to the Wisdom of God, and Jesus to the Grace of God. Reason after reason, example after example given to follow and trust in the almighty God of love. I think we can do it! I am sure that many of you can remember times where you have had to let go of self and trust God with all you had. Maybe it was a move, a career change, a financial stress, a friendship, a birth, a death, the list continues. Times in your life where you had to “Let go and Let God” as many have grown to say. I wonder if you are going through one of those times now? For me, answering the call of God to go into pastoral ministry has been a test for me. While I know that I am certain this is where God would have me to be, there are still moments that I must remind myself to choose to trust a God who can see what I cannot. Through high school I played drums at a small country church in my hometown. I was blessed to have mentors and friends who helped me to learn my instrument, but also helped me to grow in my faith. I remember vividly the moment where a shift in my life happened from simply “playing drums” to “leading worship”. I felt God more clearly than ever before and a weight felt as though it had lifted. I was able to clearly see that I was given the opportunity to lead people into the presence and power of God. While I do know I felt that moment happen, I also know that I had no idea what that meant or how to do it, but I was going to trust God. The first of many moments of having to choose to trust God over myself. From there I was able to answer my call, discern my call, and shape my call into pastor ministry in the life of the United Methodist Church. More mentors came in and offered the guidance I desperately needed. Opportunities for work and school were made available, and finally I found myself as a seminary graduate, licensed to preach, and headed down to Shalimar, FL. Talk about trusting God, I had no idea Shalimar, FL was a place! Again, trust God or rely on myself. That proverb ringing in my ear.
I now have just two more steps to go to become ordained as an Elder. I am working on what is called, commissioning paper work for Provisional membership, which is the step before ordination. All that stands before me is background information, my call to ministry, a sermon, bible study, and of course theological questions to answer. At the end, my prayer is indeed that God will continue to make my paths straight as the writer said, but still, more moments to decide to trust God or rely on myself. This process has been quite the journey. These times and many more, I have found myself wanting to rely on me over God, questioning even other times if this is exactly what I am to do. But every time I find myself in that place, I think about from where God called me. I think about the joys and pains, early morning travel and late-night studying, sermons and homilies, funerals and weddings, baptisms and communions, staff meetings and church council meetings that have gotten me to this place. Each one a moment from God to appreciate his grace, to learn humility, and to remember his love. Each one a reminder to trust God! I am grateful for this church family, who has loved me and welcomed me with open arms. I would covet your prayers, appreciate your grace, and welcome your encouragement as I continue to walk down the path to which God has called me. I am praying to trust God more, to be open to hear God’s voice, and to see clearly that finish line of at least this ordination process. Ministry is my passion. The local church has my heart. Preaching is the vehicle for leading the church into the future. I am humbled that God would call me to play a part in this great kingdom mission. So, I am going to trust with all that I have! I know that I am not the only one who is going through a time where you might be asking is this where God wants me to be? Am I truly living out God’s will? Team, I am praying with you as you pray with me, to trust God over leaning on ourselves. I have grown to find a great peace in my call. Don’t get me wrong. It took time, discernment, phone calls to mentors, and a lot of prayer, but the same can be true of you. Trust in the one who knows all and created all. Trust in the one who loves when all seems lost and gives grace when there seems to be none to find. God is in control. Surrounded by a community of faith, strive to trust God with all your heart!
Complete in Him, Matt

Blessings for Children
13
You may remember that Blessings for Children has been looking for someone to take over leadership in 2023. So it is with great relief and joy to say that prayers have been answered and God’s timing is perfect with Rendi Bonner responding “yes” to God’s call to lead this mission outreach!! Rendi brings to our ministry a mission mindset, energy and enthusiasm, new ideas and creative plans. She has a formidable skill and gift set to go along with her heart for children and meeting their needs, and has hit the ground running. Rendi will be assuming the leadership role in August. Together, with the help of an incredible group of dedicated volunteers, God’s guidance and a supportive and generous church family, we have over the last 4 years created and grown this Shalimar UMC mission outreach into an impactful and meaningful presence in our community. Our mission from the start has been “to meet the needs of children in our community while encouraging and developing Christ-centered and and church-involved relationships with their families.” Your support through prayers, donations, and your willingness to volunteer have allowed us to reach a constantly growing number of families and children, providing clothing, personal care items, Bibles/Bible stories, and school supplies to those who visit our ministry. God has affirmed that with Rendi and our amazing volunteers this mission will continue, and under her leadership will not only continue, but grow and expand in new and exciting ways to bless others. In closing it has been a gift to serve with Blessings for Children these past 4 years and now a joy to know we can continue to serve our community’s children in the years ahead. The SUMC family has grown Blessings for Children together, and together we will continue to pray that God will be glorified in this ministry’s new and needed season, and as we have always said …..that our blessings will be turned into blessings for others. Thank you, church family, for your always gracious, generous help to this ministry. Like all of us who serve this mission, Rendi will be overwhelmed by your encouraging support and now we will look forward to serving with her as she helps move Blessing for Children forward! Blessings and heartfelt thanks, Mary Jane Robertson
