How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.”

In 1983, as a brand-new Associate Pastor appointed to Shalimar United Methodist Church, I encountered so many positive people who filled the atmosphere with laughter. Many of these people have gone on to be with the Lord.

Ed Powell and Tom Goodwin would stop by the office every day. I still hear their laughter as I walk around our campus. Their positive influence really made a difference in my life. These people really sent out “good vibrations” that could be felt throughout the church.

Another of those people was named Sara Tras. Sara was well-known, a leader and resident of the city of Shalimar. She was also one of the long-standingmembers member of Shalimar UMC. She was also faithful in the chancel choir.

Sara made my day one day! After preaching one of my first sermons entitled “GOOD VIBRATIONS.” Sara surprised me when she paid me a quick visit. Sara walked into my office, smiled, brought me a six-pack of orange drinks, and set them on my desk. (The orange drinks had a commercial slogan at the time GOOD VIBRATIONS) The visit lasted only 15 seconds and was only two words when she said… “GOOD VIBRATIONS.”

We continue our series of ‘Welcome’ this week! We will be preaching on Matthew

This 15 second two-word visit not only transmitted GOOD VIBRATIONS back to me but became a story of the power of hospitality! Sara in a few seconds made me feel wel comed, wanted, and valued. She affirmed the sermon and me in a flash she was out the door. we ever considered 15 seconds could make some one feel welcome, wanted, and affirmed? Maybe it is a kind word, a smile, or affirmation or a listening ear. More impor tantly…have ever considered such positive encounters could lead a person closer to Jesus? 7:1-5 “Judge not, lest be does that have to

JoyfulPlace

In addition to having fun and fellowship at Joyful Place, we like to fill our time with meaningful activities. In this picture a few of our friends and volunteers are portioning food items out for The Bread House. This functional and repetitive task gives us purpose and makes our friends feel important and valuable. We also enjoy writing cards to community members to recognize accomplishments and awards. The recent Open House was a great opportunity for everyone to learn more about Joyful Place. We had interest from several people to volunteer with us, and we are so happy! Even with this, we are still needing to increase our volunteer pool. The number of friends at tending daily is increasing so therefore, we have a greater need for volunteers. This ministry is so needed in this community and now that the community is learning about us, our numbers will continue to grow. Will you help us grow and reach others?

Church Family,

Our incredible organist, Mary Jo Horner, has officially announced her retirement. Mary Jo has been playing the organ for over 60 years! She has played for Chapel services on military bases around the world. We have been privileged to have here as our organist since January 2008. Mary Jo and Chuck are not leaving Shalimar and will continue to be an active and vital part of our congregation. Mary Jo has told me that she wants to be the “first call” substitute for the next organist. Also, Mary Jo will continue playing percussion for our musicals. She also has graciously agreed to serve on the selection committee as we seek the new organist.

14

We plan to begin advertising for the organist position very soon. You will see that advertisement post in the Beacon. With that, if you have anyone who would be interested in applying, please ask them to contact me. Mary Jo’s last Sunday as our organist will be September 25. We will honor Mary Jo and celebrate her years of service here at SUMC as well as her career as a church organist. Please join me in expressing our gratitude for Mary Jo’s many years of service to God’s Kingdom and how that service has had such a wonderful impact on our ministries here at Shalimar!

Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow! PGFWABF! - Dr. Brad Bradford

Our SUMC Library has so much to be thankful for and much to celebrate with you! For starters, we celebrate our faithful volunteers who keep things up to date and rolling along, people who donate books for our shelves and for sharing, and those who con tinue to check out our books. Your support of our library in many ways continue to bless and encourage us!

For all of you, remember what Dr. Suess said: “The more you read, the more you know. The more you know, the smarter you grow. The smarter you grow, the stronger your voice, when speaking your mind or making your choice.”

Please know that your church library is a delightful place on our campus, offering books, DVD’s, and a peaceful space to meet or sit for a while! It’s a cool and cozy place to bring your kids to encourage them to read while they snuggle up with a good book in our bean bags.

It doesn’t matter how old we are or what kind of work we do, we’ve all wondered at times, “Does my life really matter?” Do the everyday events and messy moments make any kind of difference? Is it okay to be fulfilled by the simple acts of raising kids, working in an office, and cooking chicken for dinner?

This six-session video Bible study with bestselling author and popular blogger Melanie Shankle speaks directly to the heart of women of all ages who are long ing to find significance and meaning in the normal, everyday world. Study guides will be available the first night of class.

We get it! Prayer is difficult and awkward at times. Even the disciples needed help to pray Joinboldly.Nicci Fahle for a 7 weeks look at prayer. The who, what, when, where, and HOW to pray class that will help us to appreciate prayer even more.

Join Ron and Robin Garriga as they lead through the study “Love to Stay” by Adam Hamilton.

Tuesday | 6-7PM | August 16 - September 28

Pastor Matt will be sharing his Bible study for Commissioning in the UMC this fall. This study will be for adults of all ages and stages on their faith journey. Join us Tuesday nights from 6-7pm in the sanctuary, for study and discussion around the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to John.

Wednesday | 6-7PM | August 17 - September 28

This study will seek to offer a place where cou ples can share together about not only falling in love but look at how to stay in love. Learning about God’s love for us and our love for our spouse will be the keys to growing in our covenant relationships. All couples are invited to attend but we want to encourage new couples to commit together for the 7 weeks. Childcare will be provided.

Wednesday | 6-7PM | August 17 - September 28

In this 10-session study, Jen Wilkin shows us that Israel’s story is our story, the same God who delivered Israel also delivers all those He loves from slavery to sin and pharaohs of the world. He lifts our eyes to the promised land He has prepared where we dwell with I AM and worship Him as the one true God.

Have you ever wondered how you could have a closer walk with God? A more vibrant and intimate relationship with Him? Kelly Minter has a new 7-session Bible study, “Encountering God”, which will help us unpack and develop the sacred habits essential to a more vibrant spiritual life and enable us to know God more intimately. This is not about adding more to your to-do list; it is about providing peace and rest as you walk closer to Jesus. This is a wonderful opportunity to grow in your knowledge and love of God and to fellowship with other Christian women.

Jennie Allen knows what it’s like to swirl in a spiral of destructive thoughts, but she also knows we don’t have to stay stuck in toxic thinking patterns.

God of Deliverance Bible study is a study on Exodus 1-18 which explores the exodus of the Israelites--the Hebrew people being deliv ered from bondage to freedom so they could worship the one true God.
