Philip’s Focus
My uncle was a jokester! He used to say that he was only wrong once in his life. Then he would have gone on to say… “I thought I was wrong about something only to learn later that I was right!” Have you ever known someone like my uncle? Someone who never claims to be wrong about anything? We become up tight when we live always defending and al ways having to be right. You know we would do well at laughing at our selves. Laughter is good for the soul.
The Bible teaches us laughter is good. Proverbs 17:22 says… “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.” We live in times of some dry bones. We need more laughter not less.
We also live in days where we need more smiles and less frowns. The other day someone called my attention to the expression on my face and said… “you look like grumpy pants.” Wow…that got my attention! I immediately did an attitude check and put a smile on my face. One of my goals a few months ago was to seek to make every day the best day of my life! (I wrote about that a few Beacons ago) In addition to entering each day with enthusiasm to have the best day ever, why not smile more? What if we could all smile more?
How can we smile more? Someone years ago, told me of a concept about rule number six. Rule number is six is never take yourself too dog gone seriously! If we could remember rule number six more, we would have a better world, community, church, and world.
Laughing at Ourselves

”
We live in some anxious times. People lose their temper more, patience is short., judgement is quick, and tension is everywhere. What are ways to counter? How about smiling more, not taking ourselves too seriously, and laughing at ourselves? After all, we find in the Bible… “a merry heart is good medicine.”
I plan to see you Sunday with a smile! Shalom,
Lead Pastor Dr. Philip McVay

CHURCH LIFE 08
Empowering the Laity has always been at the heart of the United Methodist Church. We would like to empower our Laity by running a whole Sunday service.
If you are interested in being a part of Laity Sunday on October 16th please reach out to our Lay Leader, Kyle Wilson at (850) 855-9970 or jkkyle12@yahoo.com
Now announcing... Rev. and Mrs. David Garvin! Our Youth Pastor and his now wife Hannah tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony on Saturday, September 17, 2022.
We are so thrilled for them to start their journey as a married couple! There will be baskets in the Sanctuary and the FLC in the following weeks if you would like to celebrate their new season of life with a note or a card.
On World Communion Sunday, October 8th we will have a very special night of worship. We will gather as the early church did around tables and share a meal together. We will have prayers, singing, scripture readings, but the truest act of worship for the night might just be the conversation, relationship building, and sharing together as Jesus has always intend worship with a relational God.
Join our MOP’s for a ladies night of spooky fun, Halloween Bunco! Wear your best costume and bring an appetizer to share. There will be prizes, so bring a friend (or 5)!
All ages are welcome. Suggested Donation: $5. On October 8 at 7pm in the FLC.
On Wednesday, October 5 we are partnering with “Rise Against Hunger.“ It is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable.
We are honored to be working with Rise Against Hunger and are stooked to package over 20,000 packages.
Matt’s Message
Everyone loves a good story. As children we await bedtime eager to hear the next chapter in mom’s famous bedtime story. As teenagers we begin to read won derful novels and envision the scene before our eyes. As we get older the stories turn into simply sharing memories as we look back on all the fun we had. And even still, as we have children of our own, while I am not a parent, I can imagine that many conversations revolve around sharing a story with your children. Stories are special.
Stories shape our reality as they work to create a unique narrative that begins to form over time. It is this narrative arc that begins to take shape and give shape to the lives of those who hear it and are a part of it. History is shaped by stories. Lega cies are remembered through stories. By using a narrative story, worlds are created. There is no better place to see this come to life than through the pages of Scripture. The Bible is the greatest story ever told, and in it we are led to see, experience, un derstand, and grow to know God more. In fact, Jesus’s main form of teaching was to share stories. Each teaching came a story that one could easily identify with and even place oneself inside each moment.
Stories have always been part of the nature of God. It is in the self-revealing nature of the story one comes to understand a new truth, a new memory, or even a new way of being. In the same way God is a self-revealing God. God wants us to come to know God more. Through the commandments, covenants, prophets, and hymns of the Old testament we get a glimpse of God, and through the sending of Christ, the teachings and parables, the forming of the church, and the movement of the Holy Spirit we too come to know God more fully. There is no comparison — the Bible is the greatest story because it is God’s story.
It is with this as the backdrop that I would like to invite all of you to join the pastors and staff at Shalimar UMC to tell the stories that, too, will shape history, remember legacies, and create worlds.

Abigail Denney has a vision for the Beacon to become a place where people of all ages, stages of life, and wherever they find themselves in their faith journey, might come to find a story to grow their understanding of the love and grace of God. In addition, Lee and Caryn Orr has had the same vision, that the church might provide an outlet for people to share their stories of God’s transforming work in their lives. This is the launch of Shalimar’s Stories, a place where you can submit your stories that might have a kingdom impact. You never know how a story about a con versation you had with a coworker, a hospital visit you made, a moment that hap pened to you in worship, or a memory at Blue Lake might have on someone else. Additionally, we cannot tell all the wonderful things that are happening at Shalimar without your help!
We want to encourage you, empower you, and challenge you to look where God is at work around you, and share it with us. From Sunday morning worship to Splash of Joy, the Bread House, at home or the office, God is at work, and we want to share these moments with others. God is making a difference in Shalimar, FL and here at Shalimar United Methodist Church, and we want to shout it from the roof tops! We look forward to the future Beacon articles and blog posts from members of the congregation who are eager to share what God has done and is doing today. For thousands of years the Bible has been a story of God’s love and grace being of fered to the world so that all who would believe might come to accept God’s grace for themselves. We simply want to continue the story of how God is sharing grace and love around us right here at Shalimar.
Stay tuned for more info, and if you already know you are interested in shar ing a story, writing an article, doing an interview, making a video email me or Abigail Denney anytime.
Complete in Him, Matt

Thank you to all who attended or sent well wishes for our sixmonth anniversary and welcome fall party. We had a JOYFUL afternoon with wonderful friends, volunteers, pastors, families, and supporters. We ate spiced cupcakes, cheery Chex mix, drank cider, sang songs, and won some door prizes. We also enjoyed a slide show full of images of Joyful Place in action. There were so many smiles and happy moments in the pictures. The best part was just being all together to celebrate all we’ve accomplished and experienced over the last half year. There is only more fun to be had, caregivers to support, and friends and volunteers to enjoy time with.
Thank you all again for your support. Let’s all keep working together to grow this ministry. If you are interested in more information, please give me a call.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Be Joyful Always, Leigh

Have you ever wondered how you could have a closer walk with God? A more vibrant and intimate relationship with Him? Kelly Minter has a new 7-session Bible study, “Encoun tering God”, which will help us unpack and develop the sacred habits essential to a more vibrant spiritual life and enable us to know God more intimately. This is not about adding more to your to-do list; it is about providing peace and rest as you walk closer to Jesus. This is a wonderful opportunity to grow in your knowledge and love of God and to fellowship with other Christian women.
