Parable of the Lost Sheep
Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach. This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people—even eating with them!
So Jesus told them this story:
“If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’
In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away! - Luke 15: 1-7

Seven Deadly Sins
When I was Associate Pastor in the 1980s, I was busy with many responsibilities: youth, evangelism, missions, visits to our members, weddings, funerals, and preaching of course. One other opportunity was leading Bible Studies for the congregation. When the new chapel was built in 1984, a Bible study was the first activity to break in the new building. The format caught on and this rhythm for many studies over two years.
I remember fondly the format I used which included two sessions of the same study to reach more people. The mission was accomplished, well attended, and one of the week’s highlights. The Monday night session was at 6pm and was followed by a Tuesday morning 10am session.
We studied books of the Bible, conversion, evangelism, and gifts of the Spirit. These sessions produced much learning, fellowship, and fruit. I have exciting news… beginning February 28 and throughout the six weeks of Lent we are going to offer this kind of format again!
We are offering a Seven Deadly Sins study on Tuesdays throughout Lent. We want everyone to attend this study, so we are providing two times, 9am and 6:30pm This will be a pastoral team effort with Dr. Bradford, Rev. Langford, Rev. Garvin, and I leading the study.
What are the Seven Deadly Sins? PRIDE, ENVY, ANGER, SLOTH, GREED, LUST, and GLUTTONY. Sin is the root cause of everything that is not right. It is harmful, and it hurts and alienates people. If we want to be a better person, church, and world we take sin seriously and CONFESS, REPENT, and RECEIVE GOD’S FORGIVENESS.
The Bible teaches us both the sinful human condition and the possibility of redemption. Romans 6:23 says… “for the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord” (NLT). Sin is a human problem. But our solution is in Jesus Christ our Lord who died for our sins. In such times as now, turning away from sin and toward God is what we need.
Praying that you are marking your calendar now to participate in this study beginning February 28 at 10AM or 6PM.
Shalom, Philip

Hey Shalimar UMC church Family! Ben Savage here and officially writing my first beacon article! I thought writing each week will allow me to focus on certain areas of worship, tech, and connection here within our church and local community.
If you are on Facebook, browse over to https://www.facebook.com/groups/shalimarumc and ask to join. This is our Shalimar UMC online campus and is a private community group. A place which provides an opportunity for members to share updates, ask questions, and have conversations with one another.
Also, there is weekly content happening there to grow in your discipleship: This is the home of “So You’re in the Know…” weekly podcast with Rev. Matt Langford and myself as hosts. This is also available on our Shalimar website, app, Spotify, and soon to be Apple podcast.
You have ”Freedom After Dark” which is a simulated live broadcast version of what we are doing in Freedom each Sunday morning edited for online viewing. Our goal as an AVL team in 2023 is to have the best online experience for worship in the panhandle. This week we are launching a VR360 streaming experience of Freedom worship.
Children’s Director, Sarah Hicks launched the first mother’s small group online and I am working on several small group and Bible study concepts to launch in 2023 to mimic this model.
Illustrations of our own children’s ministry character is being conceptualized and we are planning a weekly augmented reality puppet show called “Shalimartian and Friends.” This will be an in-person concept we video for online children’s bible stories each week, that’s the augmented reality part.
Lots of exciting things happening on the social media front, but all of this is to reach those that are already engaging online to invite them to try our campus and find a home at Shalimar UMC in this community.
If you have any ideas on how to engage people to be a part of worship services and community each week, let me know!
Christe Eleison!

RANDY HAS PLAYED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS FOR FORMER PRESIDENTS AT THE WHITE HOUSE. HE HAS ALSO PLAYED SEVERAL TIMES AT CARNEGIE HALL, RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL, AND THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN PARIS. HE WAS HONORED TO HAVE BEEN INVITED TO PLAY FOR THE FUNERAL SERVICE FOR BILLY GRAHAM THAT WAS HELD IN CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA.

HE PLAYS FAMILIAR GOSPEL SONGS AND HYMNS SUCH AS “I’LL FLY AWAY,” “WHEN WE ALL GET TO HEAVEN,” “WHEN THE ROLL IS CALLED UP YONDER,” “REVIVE US AGAIN,” “MAJESTY,” “JOYFUL, JOYFUL, WE ADORE THEE,” AND “CROWN HIM WITH MANY CROWNS.”
SINCE IT WILL BE VALENTINE’S DAY, RANDY WILL ALSO PLAY A SEGMENT OF LOVE SONGS FROM BROADWAY MUSICALS. THESE WILL INCLUDE “AUTUMN LEAVES,” “TRY TO REMEMBER,” AND “THINK OF ME” FROM “PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.”
HIS CLOSING SEGMENT OF SONGS WILL CONSIST OF A PATRIOTIC MEDLEY, “ANCHORS AWAY,” “THE CAISSONS GO ROLLING ALONG,” “MARINE HYMN,” “AIR FORCE HYMN,” AND “GOD BLESS AMERICA.”
