Worship Led by Ben Savage and The Freedom Team

Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.”But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

- 1 Peter 3:13-22 NIV

PASTOR’S CORNER

One of the greatest joys of my ministry at Shalimar UMC has been working with the Young Adult Ministry. When I found out I would be helping lead this ministry, I had no idea what that meant or what to do. In fact, we have had more versions of what the Young Adult ministry looked like than probably any other church in three years. I really was just trying to figure out what would work. We tried one group on Thursdays, four groups on four different days, three different meeting types but this time all on Sundays, and finally moved to Wednesday Nights. With each version and each season, we learned something new. We continued to add new people, increase those who came to worship, and even help create lasting friendships.

Another major part of why I loved this part of ministry so much was that my wife, Anne Claire, and I got to do it together. Anne Claire was the host for most of our off-campus hangouts. She can create an atmosphere at our home where people feel welcomed, calm, and able to be their true selves. This has led to people that would not normally come to an event at the church having an opportunity to participate in another way. We have hosted the Not Halloween After Halloween Halloween-Costume Party, Friendsgiving, Everyone’s Favorite Christmas Party, and many more events that have all led to people being a part of this wonderful group.

In addition to the growth and excitement of Young Adults our Mothers of Preschoolers program has also grown in great numbers. Finding ways to get connected to this already established ministry truly helped to make all the difference. We have so many programs and outreach opportunities at the church. This creates so many avenues to work together to help get people connected to our church more fully. For example, one of our Young Adults found the Bread House to volunteer and be a part of, which led to an invitation to MOPs, which led to an invitation to one of our fun events for Young Adults, then to the marriage class, and now she and her family come to worship most every Sunday. Building connections, making people feel welcomed and safe, and pointing them to the love of Christ has been the mission of the Young Adult Ministry.

I have loved every second of helping to lead Young Adults. We have done some fun things like Wahoo’s games and Hockey. We have served our community through the staff and teachers and on the campus at Meigs Middle School. We have made new friends, and we have added new church members. But what I want to share most is that a ministry I thought I would use to help others has really changed me. I am not a big cliché guy but honestly, being a part of Young Adults has blessed me more than I would have imagined.

I hope everyone will continue to support the young Adults and know that we are not done yet! We have our Marriage Retreat Weekend on May 19-20, the Blue Wahoo’s Family Night on June 8, and we will continue to meet on Wednesday nights through June! Additionally, I am having a meeting soon with some of our faithful members to make sure we keep this ministry going and set the Fall semester up for success. Stay tuned for more information on upcoming events and continue to pray for God to do amazing things. Oh and one more thing…

We have a Softball Team!!!

PHILIP’S FOCUS

Dear Congregation:

Thank you for a wonderful Sunday send off into retirement! The worship was glorious to the Lord and uplifting of hearts. The reception was eloquent with so many special touches including decoration, delicious food presented as a banquet, and a violinist. Thank you to the many who went the second mile to make such a wonderful day happen!

The gift from the congregation of aesthetically appealing Adirondack chairs is so appreciated. Karen and I look forward to sitting in them often in the coming years! We will remember your love and generosity when we enjoy them.

We will continue to pray the priestly prayer for this great congregation…”May the Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine on young be gracious unto to you; The Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.”

(Numbers 6:24-26)

Shalom, Philip and Karen
