Worship Led by Ben Savage and The Freedom Team
“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
- Matthew 5:13-16

PASTOR’S CORNER
So long and thanks for all the fish!
It has been five great years, but my time has come to move on to my next pastoral appointment. During my tenure, Shalimar UMC has been a warm and welcoming church and fertile soil for me to hone my craft as a pastor. I have served with five great co-pastors,a highly trained staff, selfless adult volunteers, and ambitious student leaders. I have witnessed firsthand God’s transformative work in the lives of our teenagers and have enjoyed investing pastorally in church members of all ages. Moreover, this church will hold a very special place in my heart, as the church that presented me for ordination and the place where I found my beloved wife, Hannah. Being here has truly been my honor and privilege.
A few highlights I’ll cherish always:
*Attending Oakwood at Blue Lake Camp each summer—the spiritual mountaintop
*Meeting students in schools through our partnership with FCA
*Cutting loose as King Herod in the Fall 2021 Children’s Musical
*Parodying myself as “The Rev.” in the collaborative video series, The Challenge Weekly
*Acoustic worship by the bonfire each year just before Christmas Break
And my absolute favorite part of youth ministry, teaching Confirmation each Spring
I am pleased to announce that Hannah and I will be moving to Naples, FL where I will begin serving as the Associate Pastor of Youth Ministry for North Naples Church. Under the leadership of Senior Pastor Mark Caldwell, North Naples Church is a thriving congregation and the destination for family ministry in Collier County. I know God has great things in store for me and for the people I will serve in South Florida.
I am also grateful for the leadership of Chris Bennett, who will be stepping into the role of Youth Director following my departure at the end of the month. While many know Chris as our Facility & Maintenance Manager, you may not know of his background as the former Youth Director of Mary Esther UMC. I have enjoyed Chris’ partnership in previous ministry endeavors and I know that he is fit for the job. I hope Chris and his summer intern Tanner Dubose with have your full support. I know the Youth Ministry program at Shalimar UMC is in good hands.
As you may know, my final day as your pastor will be Sunday, May 28th. How fitting, to be sent on our remembrance of Pentecost! Hannah and I plan to visit family in Shalimar as often as we can, so you may see us around soon. If you would prefer to keep in touch online, be encouraged by my family’s insistence that I post on Facebook more than once a year (who knows?). For my students, and beloved friends, please know I am always just a phone call away. I wish you well and will keep you in my prayers!
Pax Christi,
David Garvin

JOYFUL PLACE
Our wise and wonderful friends and volunteers complied some words of guidance for upcoming graduates. Between all those that contributed to the list, we figured there was almost 1500 years’ worth of life experience behind the advice. Hope you enjoy reading….
Listen to the rules and follow them. Put on the Armor of God daily. Call your Parents!
Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Don’t skip school. Have a plan B, be prepared. Don’t drink and drive. Find a good advisor (mentor) and listen.
Even though you are away from family, you are still a part of the family. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Live joyfully and take care of our earth. Don’t do anything that would make you lose control. Set your goals and strive to reach them. Be patient and kind to yourself. Stay the course, be persistent, don’t give up! Don’t get in trouble and behave yourself. Start every day talking to God.
Invite God to spend the day with You. Stay safe.
Get a Job, be responsible. You are loved.
Cooperate and graduate.
Don’t have too much fun that may lead to failure. Poor decisions = Poor consequences Find something you love and smile about it. Find something you are passionate about and figure out a way to make a living at it. Act with integrity. Follow the Golden Rule.
Be JOYFUL ALWAYS & congrats graduates! Leigh
