GET TO KNOW OUR NEW LEAD PASTOR, REV. DR. ALAN MCBRIDE
Here are some q&a’s that were gathered by the staff and answered by Dr. Alan McBride! Make sure to check out his Beacon article in next week’s edition.
What do you do in your spare time?
I love to read. Reading has always been an escape for me to rest my brain. I read a fair amount for my “work” as a pastor, but as often as possible, I jump into history, novels about spies, espionage, and historical novels. If you have any good books to recommend, please let me know. I also love working on projects around the home or church. While in seminary, I worked for a couple of contractors and found a love for building and fixing things. I recently have even grown a love for working in the yard beyond mowing and weed eating. In late January and early February, I re-sodded my front yard without hiring a contractor because I got mad when I found out how much they would charge me to do it and discovered it was fun!
Karen and I really enjoy traveling when we can, and usually try to plan a trip once a year somewhere that doesn’t revolve around visiting our kids or other family. There have been several trips to Europe over the years, but our focus is moving toward seeing much more of our own country.
Which enneagram number are you?
One or more staff persons asked me about my Enneagram type. I have heard my kids speak about their Enneagram scores but never found out about myself. I can report now that I tend to be a Type 2 person, a “helper” who is described as holding love as the highest ideal. Along with this, I learned that my instinctual variant is “SO” which indicates that I am socially oriented, like to work in teams, and try to be pleasant. I look forward to telling my kids what I am the next time we talk!
Are you a sports fan? If so, which sport and college or pro?
We love sports, mostly college football, and have been flavored by connections through friends and family over the years to most SEC teams but tend to say we’re Alabama fans in light of having served churches in Alabama for 24 of our 30 years in ministry.
Are you a dessert person? What’s your favorite thing to eat?
I’m generally open to any dessert but feel strongly about banana pudding, good old-fashioned pound cake, and vanilla ice cream. Karen and I find food and eating with friends a great joygood Mexican and Chinese food is a must!
Your favorite verse?
My favorite verse? Having said something about my belief in the Bible, at this season of my life, I want to mention 2 verses that are my “favorite” for this time: Second Timothy 1:7 and Galatians 5:22-23. Please look them up and read them. One tells me that fear is never an appropriate motivator for the choices I make but that I have power in the love Jesus gives me by His Spirit to have the mindfulness to make the right choices. The other means that if I am filled with God’s Spirit, there are fruits of attitude and behavior that will flow from my life, and I try to be ever mindful of what fruit is spilling out.

joyful place
Oh my….. so much going on in Church life and at Joyful Place. Every morning at respite we start the day with prayer, songs and sharing what we are thankful for. You can grieve and still be grateful, you can be sick and still be grateful. Being grateful doesn’t negate the facts of life that really stink, but it is a really good way of bringing some happiness and joy back into your world. Keep in mind that everyone is facing some sort of battle, and that the people that come to respite are facing life limiting illnesses. Despite that, when they are here, they all express gratefulness. We all choose to look at the bright side of life, accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative. Here is a list of things that our friends and volunteers have been thankful for lately. After you’re done reading, count your blessings, listen to some uplifting music, and look up Dad jokes on the internet for a good laugh.
-I’m grateful that GOD saw fit to let me live another day.
-I’m thankful for my warm sweater because this room is cold.
-I’m blessed that my biopsy was negative.
-I’m thankful for the uplifting spirit in this room.
I’m grateful it didn’t rain this morning so I could go on my walk.
-I’m lucky that I always seem to have enough gas in the truck to get me here.
-I’m grateful for this cup of coffee, it is so good.
-I’m grateful for the smiles on faces I see here.
-I’m happy that my husband brings me here and then leaves :)
Be JOYFUL always!
