Philip’s Focus New Things in a New Year! What NEW things might the Lord bring in our lives in the New Year? The word NEW is possible for all of us regardless of age or circumstances. What are some ways the Bible teaches us about God making us NEW? I want to share three of my favorite New Year passages.

1. One of my favorite New Year passages is found in Isaiah. Isaiah teaches us the Lord is always making things new. The words of Isaiah 43:18-19 says simply, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a NEW thing! Now it springs up; do you do not perceive it?” (NIV) Isaiah is teaching us to stop and take a good look! God is always seeking to do a new work in us. In what ways is God leading us to see the NEW in our lives as we begin 2022? 2. God not only makes us NEW, but we can be completely transformed. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the NEW creation has come: the old is gone the NEW is here!” (NIV) As the rugged cocoon cracks bringing forth the beautiful butterfly, God seeks to do a beautiful work of transformation in us. The hardships and struggles can be redeemed and transformed. What work of transformation is God seeking to do in you?

3. My third passage to reflect on at the beginning of the year is Psalm 51:10-12, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and RENEW a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” (NIV). What sins do we need to confess as we begin the new year? God is faithful to forgive if we confess our sins and seek to have a right spirit restored in us. I have found taking an hour or more and confessing my sins of commission and omission is a great way to begin the New Year. As we pray and confess, the Holy Spirit helps us see so much in our lives that need God’s forgiveness. The Good news is God does want to forgive us of all our sins. In 2022, I pray we will all grow to be fully the person God wants us to become! What NEW work is God doing in our lives? What an exciting thought for all of us! Happy New Year! Shalom, Philip

18 New Families visited this week, representing 57 individuals. Merry Christmas, everyone! We had a huge week with just being open two days this week. On Wednesday before Christmas, we had 92 families come to the Bread House - a new one-day record! Another record for the Bread house was having 18 NEW families show up! This year alone, we have had over 2,000 different and new visitors come to our campus because of the Bread House! Meet Charlie Hough from Trinity United Methodist Church. They run a soup kitchen at Trinity. When they heard about the Bread House this week, they started delivering extra Bread products that they had! Thank you, Trinity UMC!

After a busy day at the Bread House, the volunteers met for a Christmas lunch! Everyone had a great time!

Supplies are running low on almost everything! ITEMS NEEDED THIS WEEK: EVERYTHING! 1. Paper Towels and toilet paper (a must need each week) 2. Jelly and Peanut Butter 3. Canned Vegetables If you don’t have time to shop, you can donate money to The Bread House by sending a check to SUMC; in the MEMO line, enter “Bread House.” Questions or want to become a volunteer, contact Janet Norris, 850.598.5399, email norrisjanet59@gmail.com or Pete Peters, 703.395.2437, email fpeters1@cox.net, or stop by.

Blessings for Children The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy! Psalm 126:3 Numbers won’t begin to tell the whole story. So as we close out our third year of serving children in need in our community through our Blessings for Children’s ministry, we thought we would give you a sense of how many children you have helped by your support of our church and this ministry in 2021. Blessings for Children is open one day a week, on Wednesdays, to serve families with children ages infant through 5th grade, and as of this writing, with only one Wednesday left in 2021, we have served 968 children this year. Based on the number of children we have served in the weeks leading up to Christmas (we set a record of 43 children served on Dec. 15th), we believe we will help nearly 1,000 children in 2021!

Serving children means we, through your generosity, have provided needs like diapers, baby wipes, new t-shirts, underwear and socks, personal care items to include lice treatment, and school supplies throughout the year. We served each of those children through at least one adult family member. So that is a lot of people blessed by the mission heart of this church at the #10 2nd Street house! If you drive by on Wednesdays, you may see families waiting outside to come in! You helped us provide Thanksgiving food bags and grocery gift cards to 28 families, and through your Angel Tree giving, we were able to share Walmart gift cards to help 24 very appreciative families. These numbers represent people who had a need and came to our church. Shalimar UMC has served for decades as a beacon of hope and blessings and sharing the love of Jesus in our area. Blessing for Children is a thankful and blessed ministry that opens its doors each week. May we continue to bring glory to our Heavenly Father as we serve Him and His children in the coming year! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider:

• Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the lookout

for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size 4, 5,

and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized tshirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lice treatment kits, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. •

Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly.

New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children Phone or text: (850) 499-6173 Open every Wednesday 12 - 3:30 pm
