Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Philip’s Focus Good News Around Shalimar UMC! As I alluded to on Christmas Eve, with the help of my wife Karen, we are all wanting good news. In fact, there has been way too much bad news in the past year. People have “bad news fatigue.” So, in this week’s article, I would like to give you some good news. Here are ten new and positive things that have caught my eye in the New Year. •

We have hired a new Respite Director Leigh Rice. If you have not heard, Joyful Place plans to open in 2022. This new ministry will be in Cross Corner. Joyful Place will offer the care of the church to both the church and the community. This ministry will be for those with dementia and offer respite for their families. We are grateful to General Don Litke and his operations team for making this new ministry possible!

We have new lights in the Family Life Center! The new upgraded lighting system will enhance both worship and special programs.

A large new mural of Jesus and his disciples in a boat is being painted in the Family Life Center hallway. Thank you, Sidney Moore, one of our young students in our congregation.

We now have a new comfort station in the Narthex of the Sanctuary. Woo Hoo! This restroom comes after 46 years of waiting. We are grateful for an anonymous donor in making this long-time need a reality.

When we began 2021, an amount to fund the overall ministry of Shalimar UMC was identified. As books were closed for 2021, it was apparent that God provided and exceeded the ministry amount identified one year ago. Is this not phenomenal, considering all we have been through in the last two years!

We begin the year 2022 with more resources pledged than 2021. The amount pledged is the second most in Shalimar UMC history. Remarkable considering all everyone has been through. Thank you for your faithfulness and generosity!

Recent Cross Corner renovations include a makeover of one large classroom and two large restrooms. These renovations come through tireless work and the boundless energy of volunteers. The funding has also been provided.

A new Congregational Care restructure involves making up at least ten existing and new teams. This important priority is restructuring, adding to, revamping, enlisting new people for 11 existing and new teams. This restructure is long over-due and has an opportunity to ramp up our congregation.

Printed worship guides are back and available on Sunday morning.

A great daily 40-day discipleship plan, Follow Me, is being prepared to roll out for Wednesday, March 2.

As we continue to move into the New Year 2022, let us notice the good things God is doing around us! The good signs are abundant. The good news of Jesus creates a climate where good and positive things happen. See you Sunday as we share in the Good News of Jesus once again! Shalom, Philip

A Word From Our Librarian Check It Out It's "Me" again! It is a great feeling to have precious "time" postholiday season to relax a bit and want to read again! You guessed it, with all the CHRISTmas gatherings, shopping, and decorating, there was little time for anything more. But our love of a good book is relentless within us, so here I am surrounded once again by books in this special place. At first glance, it seems as if the library elves didn't take much of a break in December, as the shelves seem freshly ordered and organized. But, for me, having these books categorized according to the subject and or the author is most welcoming! And for the first time since discovering this place of books, I am newly drawn to a shelf I had not noticed before. The section of books about health! And what a selection there, including the often-recommended Daniel Plan and the Daniel Plan Cookbook. Noticing the Maker's Diet and the First Place Plan reminds me of scripture about healthy bodies. Luckily the library's reference section was here to help me find those scriptures. One is 1 Corinthians 10:31, FYI. A cookbook or two will go home with me but not before grabbing a good novel from the fiction array. Finally, a Karen Kingsbury read joins the cookbooks, and I leave here thankful and richly blessed to enjoy this wonderful library!

Here at MOPS (Mother of Preschoolers), we gather and support moms. We believe in the simple but revolutionary idea that remarkable things happen when we come together, face-toface. If you are expecting or have an infant, toddler, or preschooler, this group is for you!

It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (ESV)

Blessings for Children The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy! Psalm 126:3 Numbers won’t begin to tell the whole story. So as we close out our third year of serving children in need in our community through our Blessings for Children’s ministry, we thought we would give you a sense of how many children you have helped by your support of our church and this ministry in 2021. Blessings for Children is open one day a week, on Wednesdays, to serve families with children ages infant through 5th grade, and as of this writing, with only one Wednesday left in 2021, we have served 968 children this year. Based on the number of children we have served in the weeks leading up to Christmas (we set a record of 43 children served on Dec. 15th), we believe we will help nearly 1,000 children in 2021!

Serving children means we, through your generosity, have provided needs like diapers, baby wipes, new t-shirts, underwear and socks, personal care items to include lice treatment, and school supplies throughout the year. We served each of those children through at least one adult family member. So that is a lot of people blessed by the mission heart of this church at the #10 2nd Street house! If you drive by on Wednesdays, you may see families waiting outside to come in! You helped us provide Thanksgiving food bags and grocery gift cards to 28 families, and through your Angel Tree giving, we were able to share Walmart gift cards to help 24 very appreciative families. These numbers represent people who had a need and came to our church. Shalimar UMC has served for decades as a beacon of hope and blessings and sharing the love of Jesus in our area. Blessing for Children is a thankful and blessed ministry that opens its doors each week. May we continue to bring glory to our Heavenly Father as we serve Him and His children in the coming year! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider:

• Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the lookout

for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size 4, 5,

and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized tshirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lice treatment kits, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. •

Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly.

New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children Phone or text: (850) 499-6173 Open every Wednesday 12 - 3:30 pm
