O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.
O ur Missi on REAC H, T EAC H, and SEND We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus A Cheerful Disposition is Good for Your Health The Proverbs says, “A cheerful disposition is good for your health; gloom and doom leave you bone-tired.” (Proverbs 17:22; The Message). We cannot always change our circumstances, but we can certainly change our outlook. In the long term, a cheerful heart leads to better health emotionally, physically, and spiritually in life. How about us? Do we fill our lives with gloom and doom? Or a cheerful disposition? We have a choice.
How do we make our hearts more cheerful? One way is maintaining a good attitude. The great motivator Zig Ziglar said, “Life is 90% attitude and 10% circumstances.” He would say, “It’s not what happens to you that determines how far you will go in life; it is how you handle what happens to you.” He would also say, “The choice to have a great attitude is something that nobody or no circumstance can take from
you.” The great Yogi Berra said humorously about baseball, “90% of the game is mental, and the other half is physical!” HAHA! Another way we keep a cheerful heart is not to take ourselves too seriously! Do we really think the world revolves around us? Or cannot function without us? Remember the parable of sticking your hand in the water? Yes. Our lives matter. Yet, we can get so wrapped up in our circumstances that we lose the joy of life. How about we keep some perspective? Our lives do matter but not at the expense of losing all of our joy! One other way we keep a cheerful disposition is humor. I remember a former member of our congregation years ago, Mr. Ed Powell. Ed had a gift of humor. He would stop by the church office each day with a joke! Most of his jokes were very funny! Ed shared the gift of laughter and humor each day. I will always have wonderful memories of his laugh and his daily trips to the office. Ed reminded me when we have a sense of humor; we are on our way to a cheerful life. In these times that can bring extra stress, uncertainties, and the feeling of being out of control, I hope we will not forget the Proverb wisdom “A cheerful heart is good medicine.” My prayer for you today is your attitude will soar upward, not take your life too seriously, and that you set your sense of humor free! I hope to see you Sunday for worship and Trunk or Treat! Shalom, Philip

31 Day Prayer For Our Pastors Challenge Pastor Appreciation month is October and it is my hope that you already pray for the SUMC and our Pastors on a regular basis. On behalf of the Tuesday Night Prayer Group and the Prayer Ministry Team, I would like to invite each of you to join us in a commitment to pray for our Pastors (Pastor Philip, Pastor Matt, Pastor Faith, Pastor David, and Pastor Brad) each day during the month of October. We hope that we can count on your support by signing up to pray for our Pastors and the SUMC for the 31 days of October. We are not asking for a time, only that you commit to pray daily for each of the pastors and for SUMC. You will be provided with a “31 day Pray for Your Pastors Challenge” to aid you in praying daily. The guide is for 31 days during the month of October. I know some of you are already praying for our pastors, and I thank you for doing so. With all that is happening in this world right now, Prayer is more important than ever. What better way to help do our part in changing the world than to start right here at SUMC. I recently heard someone say we need to "Pray Long and Pray Hard". It is my belief that Prayer does make a difference so please join us in praying for our Pastors each day during the month October and hopefully every day of the year. This could very well be the best gift you could ever give to our pastors. "God begins answering when the Prayer is made. Prayer triggers the actions in Heaven" (Max Lucado, Before Amen). Thank you in advance for your support. https://subspla.sh/xs6jmyz/1635627600 James Brantley SUMC Prayer Ministry Team

Blessings for Children Belts are a Blessing! It was her first time visiting our Blessings for Children ministry, and she had three children who needed blessings we had to share: t-shirts, underwear, socks, personal care items, and school supplies, but then she asked if we could help with a children’s belt. Her children were slim, and their pants were falling because they did not have a belt. I explained we stocked and offered particular items that we hoped would help meet a family’s needs, but unfortunately, belts were not something we had or even something I had ever seen come through our ministry in any donations. She understood and began looking through our Treasure Chest bins while we waited for her items to be gathered by our volunteers. (Treasure Chest bins are gently used clothing or child-related items that people generously share with us; many of those sharers are the families our ministry has blessed.) Suddenly, there was a scream, and I turned to look. She was holding up a children’s stretch belt with the biggest grin on her face! She said it was buried at the very bottom of the bin, and it was exactly what she needed for her children to share. Thank you, Jesus, for knowing and finding a way to provide for every need! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the
lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size
4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lice treatment kits, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimarumc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by
the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. •
Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!
•
A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. LIBRARY NEWS!
Horton of Dr. Seuss fame might have found his "WHO," but so have I! As promised last week, the "WHO" of the additions to our children's section has been "found out!" The "WHO" (actually the "WHO's") is YOU! Your generous contributions to your library have not only enabled us to share good books within our neighborhoods but have also helped us seriously up-grade our shelves! As our librarian has said more than once, children's books are beautifully illustrated and delightfully written. Spending time today in the children's section, I discovered just that as I turned the pages of books like The Velveteen Rabbit; I Love You More Than; The Kid Who Changed The World; The Mitten; and Wait Until Then. All are books begging to be read aloud and hugged while you are hopefully hugging a child. Pulling myself up from a cozy bean bag, a wonderful collection of Nancy Drew books caught my eye and brought back fond, fond memories of having read and reread so many of Nancy's mystery solvers! Speaking of Nancy Drew, the librarian just reminded me that many, many more have been checked out LONG AGO and that it would be a HUGE BLESSING to have them returned! AND, get this, no over-due charges here, nothing ever said, the return of "lost but wanting to be returned" books will be enough to put a smile on the librarian's face! So, off I go, armed with more books, having dutifully returned last week! Till next time, stay safe and well and keep reading! It's good for all that ails us!
