O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REAC H, T EAC H, and SEND We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Here's what you need to know this week. The Week of Sunday, November 14th

Thanksgiving Bags - You can find shopping lists in the Narthex or FLC lobby for our annual Thanksgiving food donations. On the list, you will find items you can purchase to help a family in our church or community have a Thanksgiving meal. Bags are due by Wed, Nov 17th. Visit subspla.sh/pjk4wp8/1635786000 for more information or to download the grocery list.

Deck the Halls - Come deck the halls with us as we decorate the Sanctuary and the Family Life Center for Advent after the 11am and 11:07am services on Sun, Nov 21st. To help in the Sanctuary contact Brad and for the FLC contact Ben.

Surviving the Holidays - Our Surviving the Holidays seminar is especially for people who are grieving a loved one’s death. You’ll learn: How to deal with the many emotions you’ll face during the holidays, what to do about traditions and other coming changes, helpful tips for surviving social events, and how to discover hope for your future. We will hold this seminar by zoom on Sun, Nov 21st from 3-4:30pm. Register at GriefShare.org.

Awaiting the Already: Advent Study - The Christmas story we know so well is really a compilation of accounts found in each of the Gospels. Join Pastor Philip and Pastor Matt on Dec 1, 8, and 15th at 6pm in room 106 as they teach an Advent study that will follow closely to the sermons looking at all four gospels to see the fullness of the Advent story.

Angel Tree - The Angel Tree Christmas campaign will begin Nov 21st and run through Dec 16th! This year, we ask that our church family donate Walmart gift cards in the amount of $25.00 each instead of wrapped gifts. Then you can return them to Gift Card boxes that will be in the Narthex or church office starting Nov 21st. Thank you for your continued support and generosity at Christmas and always!

Attendance - We would love for you to register your attendance with us. You can fill out the web form found online shalimar-umc.org/worshipattendance, or you can send an email to Faith@shalimar-umc.org.

Philip’s Focus Counting Our Blessings Next week, I get to write up my 100 blessings for the year, which is one of my most anticipated moments of the year. Decades ago, I began listing 100 reasons to be grateful each year just before Thanksgiving. This year will be no different. I look forward to preparing my list soon. There is something about counting our blessings that makes us even forget our troubles. Johnson Oatman Jr., a Methodist, wrote the famous hymn “Count Your Blessings.” He wrote thousands of hymns, but this was by far his most popular. The legend is… when the hymn made it to England in the late 19th Century, it swept the Country. “In South London, the men sang it, the boys whistled it, and the women rocked their babies to sleep with this hymn.” (101 Hymn Stories, Kenneth W. Osbeck)

NAME THEM ONE BY ONE

I notice that the words point to life’s struggles and quickly pivot toward the remedy of counting your blessings! When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed, When you are discouraged thinking all is lost Count your many blessings name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord has done. We have been tempest-tossed in the last twenty months, and we may have been discouraged thinking all is lost. Yet, counting our blessings still works today. Perhaps you may want to join me this year and list 100 blessings. It may sound difficult, but I encourage you to give it a try. Once you get started listing specific blessings, the list fills up fast! Every year I have done this, I, too, have been surprised what the Lord has done! It works every time! I am looking forward to counting our blessings TOGETHER this Sunday! Shalom, Philip

Blessings for Children Belts are a Blessing! It was her first time visiting our Blessings for Children ministry, and she had three children who needed blessings we had to share: t-shirts, underwear, socks, personal care items, and school supplies, but then she asked if we could help with a children’s belt. Her children were slim, and their pants were falling because they did not have a belt. I explained we stocked and offered particular items that we hoped would help meet a family’s needs, but unfortunately, belts were not something we had or even something I had ever seen come through our ministry in any donations. She understood and began looking through our Treasure Chest bins while we waited for her items to be gathered by our volunteers. (Treasure Chest bins are gently used clothing or child-related items that people generously share with us; many of those sharers are the families our ministry has blessed.) Suddenly, there was a scream, and I turned to look. She was holding up a children’s stretch belt with the biggest grin on her face! She said it was buried at the very bottom of the bin, and it was exactly what she needed for her children to share. Thank you, Jesus, for knowing and finding a way to provide for every need! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the

lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size

4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lice treatment kits, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimarumc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by

the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. •

Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. Angel Tree The Angel Tree Christmas campaign will begin Nov 21st-Dec 16th! For those who may not know, the Angel Tree has been a Christmas tradition at Shalimar United Methodist for decades. Through this campaign, our church members graciously give to those families who need assistance in providing for their young children.

This year, the giving campaign will change from years past. Traditionally, a large Christmas tree is placed in the Narthex of the sanctuary and the Family Life Center with Angel Tags that can be adopted and shopped for. Gifts are then returned wrapped for each child. This year, after input from many areas of our church and congregation, it was decided we need to change the way The Angel Tree program works and responds to needs of our nominated families.

Instead of focusing on the individual child, we want to include the parents and guardians of the children by providing them gift cards from Walmart. We are asking that our church family donate Walmart gift cards in the amount of $25.00 each. Depending on your budget, you can donate in $25.00 increments. So, if you would like to donate $100.00, you would purchase 4 - $25.00 Walmart gift cards and return them to the Gift Card boxes in the Narthex or in the church office. At the end of the campaign, we will distribute the gift cards in equal amounts to the nominated families from our own congregation and those who are associated with our church family. Thank you for your continued support and generosity at Christmas and always!
