O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.
O ur Missi on REAC H, T EAC H, and SEND We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Wors hi p S ervices T rad itions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre ed om At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus TOGETHER in Doxology Ten years from now, we will likely reminisce about the years 2020-2021. We will possibly reflect on how quickly the normal we knew changed in the “blink of an eye.” The dramatic changes sparked isolation, separation, division, and sharp differences of opinion on many subjects. Oh, how the world has changed since March of 2020!
The surges of Covid seem to be subsiding, thank God! Yet still, everything is still “out of whack.” Even supply and demand, which always seems to drive things, is out of kilter. Recently, some businesses have been booming with success! Other companies are hard-pressed to have enough workers and are facing some tough decisions. Finally, some have experienced prosperity and other shortages. In all that has transpired, our human condition and need for God have not changed. As we all face an unknown future, some have been very frustrated, irritated, and even take out their discontent on others. Yet, many have known the higher truth revealed in the bizarre 20 months. We never had control to begin with. We only thought we did! Let me repeat that. WE NEVER HAD CONTROL! WE ONLY THOUGHT WE DID!
The acceptance and reality that only God has complete control is a good thing! When we give the controls to God, we are set free! In the last 20 months, God’s blessings have continued to flow and overflow toward us. In the future, I predict we will focus more on how God helped us through this remarkable era! How has God blessed you? What are your reasons to sing the Doxology and give “Praise to God from whom all blessings flow?” In the next few weeks, I will be working on my list of praises to God. Thanksgiving is just around the corner. I would encourage you to focus on the blessings of God too!
In the next few weeks, we will invite our congregation to enthusiastically participate in Doxology TOGETHER! Being positive and praising God TOGETHER will elevate the spiritual life and participation in our congregation! Let’s praise God and lift the roof! We have insurance! In fact, the very best insurance! We never had control, and it is God that always blesses us and brings us through! Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Shalom, Philip

Thank you! Trunk or Treat Winners Thanks so very much to everyone who decorated their trunks and participated in this year’s Trunk or Treat event! We appreciate your creativity and dedication to serving the children and families in our community. We are also grateful to have had the pastors judge the trunks. The winners of this year’s Trunk Decorating Contest included: 1st Place: Noah’s Ark (Kathy Curry) 2nd Place: Carnival (Rendi Bonner) 3rd Place: Country Store (Carla Crowson and the Special Buddies)
Trunk or Treat Volunteer Appreciation There were over six hundred individuals who attended this year’s Trunk or Treat event. It was a great evening of fun, food, and fellowship! There were many individuals whose passion, energy, and dedication helped make the event an immense success. A large group of volunteers served by setting up, donating, and refilling candy, managing the traffic flow, and parking cars, greeting guests, providing security, preparing, and serving supper, gathering information for the raffle and follow up, helping with the photo booth, and cleaning up after the event. A special thanks to Pastor Matt Langford for hosting the Hoop Zone, to Kathy Curry for “wowing” the children with the fantastic Noah’s Ark display; and to Ben and Angelina Savage, for bringing “farm, fun and music” with his festive and large hay and pumpkin truck. We thank all of you so very much for your generous gift of time and arduous work! The Mission and Outreach Committee

Blessings for Children Belts are a Blessing! It was her first time visiting our Blessings for Children ministry, and she had three children who needed blessings we had to share: t-shirts, underwear, socks, personal care items, and school supplies, but then she asked if we could help with a children’s belt. Her children were slim, and their pants were falling because they did not have a belt. I explained we stocked and offered particular items that we hoped would help meet a family’s needs, but unfortunately, belts were not something we had or even something I had ever seen come through our ministry in any donations. She understood and began looking through our Treasure Chest bins while we waited for her items to be gathered by our volunteers. (Treasure Chest bins are gently used clothing or child-related items that people generously share with us; many of those sharers are the families our ministry has blessed.) Suddenly, there was a scream, and I turned to look. She was holding up a children’s stretch belt with the biggest grin on her face! She said it was buried at the very bottom of the bin, and it was exactly what she needed for her children to share. Thank you, Jesus, for knowing and finding a way to provide for every need! If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the
lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size
4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lice treatment kits, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimarumc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by
the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm. •
Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!
•
A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. A Word From Our Librarian It’s Wednesday and time for my weekly visit to our church library! And, WOW, what a difference a week or two has made in here! With lots of “leftovers” from the recent book sale still boxed, the shelves seem to be exploding with even more wonderful books! The kids’ section alone draws me in with its colorful rugs and comfy bean bag chairs. Now, I am noticing for the first time a section called Junior Fiction; I am drawn to a collection of Rick Riordan books, the fantasy collections written by the “storyteller of the gods.” Riordan’s fantasy adventures in backgrounds rooted in ancient mythology with 21stcentury narration. I might nose-dive into one of those, “just because!” And then I almost bump into a little bookcase of Biographies where two newer-looking selections catch my interest. I love reading well-written books about true events, and both of these discoveries intrigue me. The first, The Boys in the Boat, is the very true tale of nine Americans and the epic quest of Gold at the 1936 Olympics! The back cover says it’s the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from our American West showed the world the meaning of “true grit!” That’s enough for me! But wait, there’s even more. The Day the World Came to Town recalls how several small towns in Newfoundland responded to the truly extraordinary challenge of caring for thirty-eight jetliners and passengers forced to land in Gander on September 11, 2001. I got to read this, too, so to the check-out counter, I go, three potentially good “reads” in hand. Thank you, SUMC Library, for your offerings and thensome!!!
