O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.
O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and SEN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Wors hi p Services Break F re e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. Traditions At 8:00 and 11:00am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus As you likely know, the General Conference met this week in St. Louis February 23-26, and I would like to share with you a brief summary of the outcome of this historic meeting. This special called session of General Conference was for the purpose of addressing issues of human sexuality and determining the official stance of our denomination. The outcome is the adoption of the “Traditional Plan.” The Traditional Plan recognizes our historic view that all people regardless of sexual orientation are persons of worth and in need of the ministry of the church. It also prohibits same-gender unions in our churches and by our pastors and continues the traditional stance of not ordaining self-avowed practicing homosexuals. Other plans including the “One Church Plan,” “Connectional Plan,” and “Simple Plan” were considered but did not pass the legislative committee. This action means the current Book of Discipline position on human sexuality issues continues through January of 2020. At that time, the new components of the “Traditional Plan,” which are deemed constitutional by the Judicial Council, will take effect. Bishop David Graves will conduct follow-up meetings to give an overview of the General Conference on March 7 at Montgomery First UMC at 6PM, March 9 at Covenant UMC, at 10AM, and March 10 at Christ UMC Mobile at 4PM. We will also have a follow-up information session here at Shalimar UMC, which I will lead, on March 17 at 1:30 PM. If you would like to know more, you can visit: www.awfumc.org. What does this outcome mean for Shalimar United Methodist Church? First, let us continue to be in prayer for all those across our United Methodist Church. This action of the General Conference is met with joy by many but brings pain to others across our denomination so let us resist the urge to gloat. Second, let us continue to love all people and live the general rules of the church which are to #1 do good, #2 do no harm and #3 stay in Love with God. We still have so much to learn from Jesus about what it means to love all people.
continued
Finally, this action means a decision has been made, and we can now devote more time, energy, and focus to our primary reason for being in the church: to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world! This is our greatest opportunity and our greatest mission at Shalimar United Methodist Church! Shalom, Philip
Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor philip@shalimar-umc.org
How Can I Forgive You? Anyone who has heard about Jesus has heard the word “forgiveness.” Jesus healed people with forgiveness. His sacrifice was for the forgiveness of sins. God is slow to anger and quick to forgive. Jesus, Paul and those who followed after him, taught us to forgive one another. We are told that we are judged by the same measure in which we judge others. Forgiveness is a prerequisite for the Christian life! We can easily find plenty of verses that stress the importance of forgiveness. But it’s more difficult to find the verses that tell us exactly how to do it. It’s not rhetorical when someone who has been betrayed asks, “How can I forgive you?” Being unable to forgive, for many people, is a huge obstacle in their Christian discipleship. Learning how to forgive has been a very important part of my own spiritual development and psychological health. When I began studying what God has to say about forgiveness, I realized the “how to” is in the owner’s manual - the Bible! It isn’t spelled out specifically in one place so it helps to walk through the steps and learn together with other people. I am offering such a class on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm, starting March 13 and ending April 17. We will use the book, Total Forgiveness, by R.T. Kendall. During these six weeks, we will learn: Why should I forgive? If someone has wronged me, should I always bring it to their attention? What is (and is not) forgiveness? How do I forgive myself? How do I forgive God? Why should I forgive someone who doesn’t deserve it? How do I know I have totally forgiven? What steps do I take to get from being hurt to being healed? continued
How do I forgive over and over without becoming a doormat for others’ abuse? What about forgiving someone who’s not sorry, or doesn’t know they’ve wronged me, or even someone who’s no longer with us? I would love for you to join me in this important class. I have seen many people make great strides in their lives by learning how to practice forgiveness on a daily basis. To register for the class, come by the church office and pick up a book. I hope to see you there. Pastor Brian

Blessings for Children is an SUMC missions outreach ministry serving our community’s children (newborn through fifth grade) by providing them with clothing, personal care items and school supplies and we are in need of volunteers. Our ministry serves out of the #10 2nd Street house behind the church on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays and 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. There is no obligation to a specific ongoing volunteer commitment. We need you when you are available. So if you have a heart to serve by sharing God’s blessings in love to children and their families, there is a place for you in this ministry! Training can be provided if you are interested in volunteering when the home is open to receive families, or you may also choose to volunteer to help with inventory and stocking of our donations, or computer work. We are so grateful for the way our church family is supporting Blessings for Children with prayers, financial donations and donated items. If you would like to bring items to donate, please do so every 3rd Sunday at the drop off boxes in the narthex and the FLC lobby. Please visit the SUMC Missions page at https://sumc.io/blessings to see the collections list (diapers and toilet paper are always needed!) and know your donations will be gratefully received and distributed. If you would like to serve with this ministry by volunteering, please contact Mary Jane Robertson at mjr53@cox.net or text or call (850) 499-6173.
