Wors hi p S ervices Traditions At 8:00am and 11:00 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00am service. Conn ect At 9:30am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary, we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07am Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym, we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a nontraditional atmosphere. Philip’s Focus Forty Leaders for Forty Days Save the dates now! The season of Lent in 2022 begins on March 2. Lent will extend through Easter, April 17, 2022. Thus, in the coming six months, we will have an opportunity to prepare for an unprecedented time of discipleship making through Shalimar United Methodist Church. One of the crucial steps of discipleship growth planning begins in October. My goal is to have 40 team leaders in place by October 31, 2021, to guide small groups, prayer groups, Bible studies, lecture classes with TEACHERS, new classes, and other discipleship options. Team leaders for Lent 2022 will have four months to plan for the success of this Lenten discipleship initiative.

In October, I will be actively recruiting potential leaders for these Lenten classes. As a college football coach goes on the recruiting trail, I will be spending significant time inviting potential leaders to participate in this grand discipleship wave of Lent 2022. If you are interested in being one of the forty, here is some information that might help you say “YES.”

• • •

We will receive coaching to help us be successful with the Lenten discipleship wave! We will receive resources, tools, and a plan for Lent during November. We will have three months in advance to invite and recruit our groups. (Groups can be any size, but usually the smaller, the better, with 7-12 persons being ideal) We can invite our friends, neighbors, and other people we already know for our discipleship journey. We can choose to lead people we do not know. We can choose our location on the church campus, our home, coffee shop, online, or zoom.

The creation of 40 additional teams for 40 days will involve a significant number of people both in our congregation and REACHING into our community! When we add these new teams to our existing teams, we will be taking a step toward 1,000 persons in weekly discipleship through Shalimar United Methodist Church. Are you one of these 40 persons to lead for 40 days? I sure hope so!

Please keep the upcoming months of preparation in your prayers. We seek to meet the Holy Spirit in this post-Covid church that is being birthed. In such times, let us follow our Lord’s teachings “make disciples” of all nations. Let us become more like Jesus every day as our environment is ripe for the harvest. In the words of Jesus, “the harvest is great the workers are few. So, pray to the

Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to SEND more workers into his fields.” (Luke 10:2; NLT). Say “YES” to discipleship 2022!

Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor philip@shalimar-umc.org

If you can come at 5:00, join us for supper. If you want to eat at home, we start at 5:30. We have been enjoying choir, games, crafts along with our weekly Bible devotion time! If the weather allows, we even have time for the playground and “Gaga Ball.” We will be preparing a full Christmas Musical and will be signing up for parts soon. Even if you don’t like to speak on stage, we need children to help paint and build props and sets. We have more children every week, and we would love to have you join us! Don’t miss the fun!

Attention all Parents Bible and Worship is for 4-year-olds - 5th grade

We are excited about some changes happening on the first Sunday of the month! The 9:30 session of Worship and Bible will continue in our usual classrooms. The 11:00 session will begin by worship with the adults in the Freedom Service. The Kidz Club Choir will sing at the beginning of the service. After their song, the worship portion of Worship and Bible will happen in the Freedom Service. Children age 4-2nd grade will join the singing and then leave the service with their teacher and go to their classroom for Bible Class. Grades 3rd-5th will remain in the Freedom service. They may either sit with their parents or sit with their teacher. Children are always welcome in any of our worship services! We are excited to offer a variety of worship options for children to be with their church family! FYI - We haven’t done it yet, but hopefully, the children will learn the first song the team is singing next month so we can participate in a fuller way. After a year of Covid 19 lockdowns, who are ready to get active again in the name of the Lord?! Join us for a Run for God study! Even if you've never run before, you can join our class and learn everything from picking out the right shoes to completing your first 5K with us in November at Shalimar UMC! The Run for God Challenge is a guide to running and a 12-week training plan aimed at running a 5K, but with a Christian focus. The 5K Challenge introduces runners to the parallels of faith and fitness. The workout plans, discussion questions, and Bible verses make it both a practical resource and workbook for individuals and groups, especially new runners. Run for God is for all levels of runners, even those who have never run. Learn to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ while understanding the parallels of running and faith. Sign up for class materials: https://runforgod.com/ classes/sumc-run-for-god, and even if you don't want to buy materials but still participate, the class instructor can sign you up manually.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (ESV)

Blessings for Children For the Children When a group of us gathered at the church in the fall of 2018 to talk about what we believed children in our community needed and how Christ would want us to serve them, our focus was always “for the children.” The services and items we share at Blessings for Children and even our name evolved from that mission statement. It is affirmed each time someone drops off a donation at the #10 house saying it’s something they think the children could use or enjoy, or graciously gives a financial gift to purchase the items we share, or when our volunteers walk through the door eager to serve. All of this is “for the children.” A few weeks ago, I was in line at Walmart with a cart full of items that were clearly “for the children” - school supplies, clothing, diapers. An elderly gentleman in a mobility scooter in the line next to me asked me why I had so many items. I explained about our Shalimar UMC’s mission ministry, and he dug around in his pocket and pulled out a crumpled bill and reached out to me with a true twinkle in his eyes and said, “For the children!”

If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the

lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size

4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lice treatment kits, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimarumc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm.

Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the

church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly.

New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required. For additional information Mary Jane Robertson Email: mjr53@cox.net Visit: shalimar-umc.org/blessings-for-children Phone or text: (850) 499-6173 Open every Wednesday 12 - 3:30 pm
