Philip’s Focus Parry Family Moving to Jacksonville

Rev. Faith Parry’s husband, AJ, has been presented and accepted a full-time position with the National Guard. His new position is quite an opportunity and begins immediately in October. As a result, the Parry family will be moving to Jacksonville, Florida. In complete support of this opportunity for her family, Faith will transition out of her role at Shalimar UMC by the end of the year. She and Abigail will move to Jacksonville to join AJ in the coming months. Faith joined our pastoral staff in 2017 as an associate pastor from the Navarre United Methodist Church. She is one of many young associate pastors that have served at Shalimar. Shalimar UMC has always had a tradition of helping young pastors in their ordination path. Faith is in the final preparation of submitting her ordination requirements while at Shalimar UMC. This is one of our congregation’s lasting contributions to Faith’s journey of ministry. We especially appreciate Faith’s contributions to our congregation since 2017. As Communication Pastor, she has been a key leader in technology expansion, including live stream and leadership with the online campus. Behind the scenes, she mentored countless people and held classes on using technology when “in-person” options

were not available. People have said Faith’s biggest contribution was helping people stay connected through technology during the isolated times of the pandemic.

As Faith transitions to move with her family, what will happen to her role as Communication Pastor? We do not plan to receive another pastor to fill her vacancy. As a result, the church budget will be reduced, and so will the number of our pastors. Faith’s duties will be primarily assigned and realigned with existing staff. The StaffParish Committee will also monitor future staffing needs in the areas of communication, online, and technology going forward into 2022. In the coming weeks, please take a moment to thank Faith for her contributions while at Shalimar United Methodist Church. She has helped us with innovative ways in unprecedented times. There will be more communication about Faith’s transition in the coming weeks. In the meantime, join me in prayer for AJ, Faith, and Abigail, as they begin the transition to Jacksonville. Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor philip@shalimar-umc.org

A Word from Faith God Goes Before God goes before us. Sometimes we don't see how he is working or where he is leading, but he always walks with us and guides us when we seek him. A lot has been going on in the Parry house, as we've been seeking God this year. It started with me praying about going before the Board of Ordained Ministry (BOM) this year again. It's a huge decision and a lot of work. I've put the BOM off for years because of family things but felt God saying this was the year. Abigail was enrolled in an online school program to help her deal with her social, academic, and anxiety needs. We felt God was with our family in a season of preparation, but we weren't sure what it was. Then, AJ returned home from a 5-week Army training with an offer to go full-time as a trainer for the state disaster response team called CERFP. Disaster response is the reason AJ joined the Army National Guard 10 years ago. The Florida National Guard chose AJ to train soldiers across the state to respond to natural and manufactured disasters.

My Amazing Husband I am so proud of my husband, his desire to help others in times of hardships, and his accomplishments that led to this job opportunity. I should note, this new job is at Camp Blanding, outside Jacksonville, FL. God goes before us; before we know we need him. When I decided to go before the BOM this year, I had no idea that I would be living outside our conference's geographical area next year. Completing my ordination work this year was indeed God's timing, not mine. Abigail being in school online will make it easy for our family to transition flexibly and not think about school. Talk about a "God-a-dink." The Parry family is moving. AJ's job starts October 1. Abigail and I will be staying in Shalimar through December. We don't know many things yet, but what we do know is that God is always doing extraordinary things. The list of ways he has prepared our family for this opportunity is endless. I know he is going to continue to prepare the way.

How You Can Help I'm sure this will make many of you sad. I am praying for our church, and I ask that you pray for us. Pray that God will show clearly everyone's next steps. Please pray for our family as AJ travels back and forth every few weeks. Most importantly, please pray that God is glorified through this next chapter in the life of the Parry Family. Collect moving supplies. We are self-moving, so if you see moving boxes or get the newspaper, please bring those supplies either by the parsonage (12 Meigs Dr) or to my office. I'd greatly appreciate it. Consider volunteering. Some ministries will have gaps when I leave that need help, like our technology ministries, online ministry, and nursery ministry. If these are areas that you have skills and passions, consider stepping in. I'll be focusing my last months on helping identify people to fill gaps and empower them to carry on God's work as the church has always done in times of transition. Once again, please pray. Pray that God will bless our church, ministries, and Kingdom through this change. I know he will do amazing things when we step out of the known into his future. In His Service, Faith Rev. Faith Parry, Communication Pastor Faith@shalimar-umc.org

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (ESV)

Blessings for Children For the Children When a group of us gathered at the church in the fall of 2018 to talk about what we believed children in our community needed and how Christ would want us to serve them, our focus was always “for the children.” The services and items we share at Blessings for Children and even our name evolved from that mission statement. It is affirmed each time someone drops off a donation at the #10 house saying it’s something they think the children could use or enjoy, or graciously gives a financial gift to purchase the items we share, or when our volunteers walk through the door eager to serve. All of this is “for the children.” A few weeks ago, I was in line at Walmart with a cart full of items that were clearly “for the children” - school supplies, clothing, diapers. An elderly gentleman in a mobility scooter in the line next to me asked me why I had so many items. I explained about our Shalimar UMC’s mission ministry, and he dug around in his pocket and pulled out a crumpled bill and reached out to me with a true twinkle in his eyes and said, “For the children!” If you would like to join us in helping our area’s children in need at Blessings for Children, here are some ways to consider: • Please pray for the ministry and all who participate. Be on the

lookout for families you can refer to us for assistance. • Consider donating items we distribute to the children: diapers (size

4, 5, and 6 in particular), pull-ups, wipes, school supplies, children sized t-shirts, socks and underwear, children’s toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lice treatment kits, and toilet paper. A complete list of items we distribute can be found at shalimarumc.org/blessings-for-children. You can donate items by stopping by the #10 2nd Street house behind the church any Wednesdays from 11:30am - 3:30pm.

Children’s bibles, bible stories, and activity books are always a joy to receive and distribute. Spanish language Bibles are always needed!

• A financial gift designated to Blessings for Children through the

church allows us to replenish the needed items we distribute weekly. New volunteers are always welcome, with no regular commitment required.
