EDITORS NOTE “ O N LY Y O U A R E WA I TING FOR YOU TO ACHIEVE G R E A T N E S S ”. I’ve never wanted my Ed’s notes to be the usual ‘In this issue’, I’ve always wanted to connect with my audience right from the get go, so that they know that this body of work has been created by a human being and not consolidated clipping from junior staff put together by a copy writer, but from me the creator and heart behind the magazine. I love it when people say I loved that quote and I actually know exactly what they’re talking about and how I felt writing it. Somtimes we try so hard to fit the mould, whether it be the mould of Editors notes or the mould of what a woman should look like that we miss an opportunity to give the whole world a beautiful gift called US. Completing the whole magazines took me months, months cause honestly I didn’t appropriate my time well enough and months cause I guess self-sabotage is a real thing out here. We self sabotage all the time, I’m sure if you’re like me you take your new years resolutions/goals very ‘seriously’. Well truth is I’ve had a 20 year plan for many years now it actually discourages me looking at it... but I digress... what I’m trying to say is that it took me long not cause I couldn’t but because I wouldn’t. What are some of the things you said you’d do and right now you’re reading my Ed’s note like SN A P! I NEED TO GE T T H AT DONE . And if you look deep enough you’ll realise that you could have done it all these four months but just haven’t. Well, guess what? you can still do. Take the time and find one thing you can do right now, yup right now, find something you can do in the next 24 hours and get on it. Don’t overthink, just do it and if you’re afraid you’ll back out post it on Facebook or instagram (or the other social media we don’t talk about any more... hahaha I’m joking Twitter fans). I know there’s a lot of moving pieces and that’s why you haven’t gotten it done but just start today, right now! Don’t let your imaginary fears hold you hostage, just start! live beautifully. Applications have opened for the Barclays Accelerator programme, powered by Techstars, an initiative aimed at uncovering the next M-Pesa or Paypal by working with exceptional fintech entrepreneurs innovating Africa’s financial services industry. The collaboration between Barclays Africa and Techstars offers a game-changing opportunity to 10 qualifying fintech startups, which will take part in a 13-week programme beginning in May 2017, based out of the Rise fintech innovation hub in Woodstock, Cape Town. The Barclays Accelerator first came to Africa at the beginning of 2016 and was a significant success, with Barclays Africa signing initial collaboration agreements with 7 of the 10 startups that were part of the programme. Yasaman Hadjibashi, leading the innovation agenda for the bank says: “Africa has tremendous untapped potential to not only pioneer its own creative solutions for its unique contexts but to also create solutions that the rest of the world can adopt for their own contexts.” 6

Opposite, top South Africa’s President, President Jacob Zuma Opposite, Bottom Kwese TV

Not very long ago I remember a very well respected leader in the ANC (African National Congress) in South Africa saying they would rule until Jesus comes.... hmmm well I guess judgement day is fast approaching as South Africa spills into more political chaos. It’s been an open secret that not everyone was happy with the recent turn of events in the ANC or maybe in particular with President Jacob Zuma and his relationship with the Gupta’s. Well this time it’s more than allegations that the Guptas summoned ministers to their Saxson world mansion to “give” them positions but the outcry this time has sent tremors in the ANC that “Zuma Must Go”. Although to be honest a lot of the noise started with political rivals the EFF and the official oppostion the DA (Democratic Alliance) it’s clear many in the ANC are just as unhappy about President Jacob Zuma’s leadership as them. Many from former President of South Africa and the ANC, Thabo Mbeki (who himself was sent packing if we recall), to the usually muted Kgalema Motlanthe and quite recently the late stalwart Ahmed Kathrada have expressed the very same sentiment, noting that the ANC has fallen from glory and that President Zum seemed to be in the fore front of corruption selling the nation to the rich and well connected Gupta family.

But not everyone is singing from the same hym book and many have come guns blazing in defence of President Jacob Zuma and some would say the ANC. The ANC Youth League in Kwazulu Natal has taken particular offense even disrupting the memorial service of the late Ahmed Kathrada held in Kwazulu Natal, bursting into songs of praise for Zuma as former finance minister Pravin Gordhan tried to say his speech, even pushing ANC Treasurer General Zweli Mkhize, to try and restore calm but as many say Kwazulu natal is Zuma country so... the disruptions were the order of the day. Just as other ANC heavy weights have come out to speak against Zuma, the ANC was not lost of their own heavy hitters such as Fikile Mbalula saying that “the ANC must never support people who don’t prioritise the interests of black people.”. The saga continues and the story unfolds, as a ‘Zuma must fall’ March pretty much Capetown to a stand still and the ANC MK soldiers wore their combatives joined by the Youth League to defend Luthuli House, it’s clear to see that this is a transitionary moment in time for the ANC and South Africa. Many are out for the President’s blook but ever the esacpe artist we look forward to see if he’ll be able to get himself out of this one.

Reading Corner 4

Inspired by Nigeria’s folktales and its war, Under the Udala Trees is a deeply searching, powerful debut about the dangers of living and loving openly. Ijeoma comes of age as her nation does; born before independence, she is eleven when civil war breaks out in the young republic of Nigeria. Sent away to safety, she meets another displaced child and they, star-crossed, fall in love. They are from different ethnic communities. They are also both girls. When their love is discovered, Ijeoma learns that she will have to hide this part of herself. But there is a cost to living inside a lie. As Edwidge Danticat has made personal the legacy of Haiti’s political coming of age, Okparanta’s Under the Udala Trees uses one woman’s lifetime to examine the ways in which Nigerians continue to struggle toward selfhood. Even as their nation contends with and recovers from the effects of war and division, Nigerian lives are also wrecked and lost from taboo and prejudice. This story offers a glimmer of hope — a future where a woman might just be able to shape her life around

truth and love.

After taking the reigns of her destiny through online communities, marketing and blogging, Karen found the keys to her continuous success. Be You and Live Civil; Tools for Unlocking Your Potential & Living Your Purpose incorporates Karen’s personal journey through life, how she unlocked her purpose and how you too can gain mental strength through self-motivation, positive attitude, understanding and accepting yourself.” -C O N T E N T F R O M A M A Z O N . A picture is worth a thousands words many say but what is the real value of a beautiful image in today’s instagram saturated world. Don’t get me wrong I love me an instagram pic just like the next instagramer but have we lost our quality for quantity? Has the world of artistic photography lost to the world of insta-baddies and make-up on fleek images or are we just evolving and creating different ideals of beautiful images? I will say this, the invent of smart phones with camera’s in them that can capture 4k video and have picture quality the same as a DSLR or mirrorless camera has definitely leveled the playing field. Not only does it mean anyone with this type of cellphone can shoot their own images but it means that photography is no longer sacred ground for those with camera’s but now it’s about relevance, your level of creativity and also marketing. How you as a photographer or faux-photographer (don’t judge me this is just a joke all smart phone photographers) network and market your images. It’s no longer a given that just because you have a DSLR Canon, Nikon, Sony and ‘others’ that you’ll automatically get the job, the new portfolio pack is instagram, Facebook and the world wide web and the new client is a young exec with guess what? yup you guessed it a smart phone with editing Apps. So whats the conclusion you ask? Simple adapt or DIE.

Ava DuVernay an awesome, history making film maker who we came to know when she directed the movie Selma which starred Hollywood heavy weights like Oprah Winfrey. Not only was the movie monumental for black culture but for a movie industry where not many movies of colour can say they’ve won an Oscar. She was also the first AfricanAmerican woman to win the Best Director Prize for her second feature film Middle of Nowhere at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

Selma had a budget of $20 million and grossed an impressive $52 million just in America. (take that to the bank). But it’s not just the money but the story about the late struggle hero Martin Luther King Jnr how his determination to give black people the same voice in a democracy to vote, to be counted, to shape their future. The story has many other smaller storylines that add to it without taking away from this historic moment set in Selma, Alabama. Not only does she make amazing cinematic, monumental content but she’s also been eternally immortalised as a barbie by Matell. A few African American women can say they’ve had the honour of being turned into barbie and not only was she barbie but she was also chosen as one of Mattel’s “Sheros” of 2015 with all proceeds from her barbie going to charity.

The barbie sold out and because of the demand is now available in a collectable version. “Duvernay became the inaugural recipient of the Tribeca Film Institute’s Heineken Affinity Award, receiving a $20,000 prize and industry support for future projects. DuVernay donated all the money to the black arthouse film collective she founded known as AFFRM.” Her social media pages are candid and hilarious, and even with her Hollywood credentials through the roof as she partners with Oprah Winfrey to create new television series ‘Queen Sugar’ she’s still receiving critical acclaim. Not only can she name drop to her heart’s content but her work actually out weighs her connections and we can proudly say that in “2017, she became the first black woman nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, which she was nominated for her film 13th”. Now that is ‘Black Girl Magic’! -quotes from wikipedia

ms & taking names Amma Asante is definitely a woman who causes major tidal waves in the film industry, born in 1969 13 September she’s a British screenwriter, film director, and former actress, who’s written and directed films like ‘A Way of Life’ in 2004 and directed Belle in 2013. Asante left acting in her late teens to work in screenwriting with a development deal from Chrysalis. “She founded a production company, Tantrum Films, and wrote and produced two series of the BBC2 drama Brothers and Sisters. Asante used Tantrum Films to make her directorial debut with a feature film, A Way of Life (2004). It was developed and financed through the UK Film Council and produced by Peter Edwards, Patrick Cassavetti and Golden Globe Award and BAFTA Award winner Charlie Hanson. On 17 January 2005, the Times said of Asante, “She is one of the most exciting prospects in British cinema to emerge in the past 12 months.” She has won awards such as The Alfred Dunhill UK Film Talent Award, the London Film Festival, The Times’s Breakthrough Artist of the Year and has been nominated for Best Newcomer at both the Evening Standard and London Film Critics award ceremonies. She’s also received the Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement by a British Writer, director, or Producer in Their First Feature Film, by the BAFTA’s, The 2005 Miami International Film Festival awarded A Way of Life as Best Dramatic Feature in World Cinema and the FIPRESCI prize (International Federation of Film Critics prize) for Best Feature Film. There are so many more awards and achievements to her life and as a woman of colour in a field dominated by mostly white males she’s breaking the glass ceiling. Asante’s second feature film, Belle, which have some heavy weight actors like Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson and one of our favourite actresses from African decent Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Dido Elizabeth Belle, the lead is based on “Dido Elizabeth Belle, an illegitimate mixed-race daughter of an enslaved African woman and a British navy captain, who placed the girl with his uncle (and Belle’s great-uncle) Lord Mansfield and his wife in late 18th-century London.” Asante’s stories are not only technically brilliant but unashamedly address issues of race and we love seeing her authentic voice as a black woman in these films and narratives. -quotes from wikipedia

Good leaders have given me the courage to expand my ideas, allow me to make mistakes, take ownership or responsibility and courage to rise above them while growing in the process. I cannot expand on how imperative good leadership is in the development of an individual’s career and life as a whole. Leaders help build structures of hope for ourselves and others around us. What kind of work do you do? I am a Marketing Co-Ordinator for a private property development company What advice would you give to someone wanting to be in the same space? She also graduated from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism in 2006 (and a degree in slayage from the Black Girls Making history Institution of the Elite... ok, ok it doesn’t really exist but if it did she would hold it). Just before we get to winter here in Africa we want to switch it up with a bit of ice-cream, you know something to cool us down after the hot blaze of the African sun on our faces and the dynamic and complex political situations for many of us. (Mauritus and Ethopia we’ll ignore you for now). Our winters are cold... for us that is.... I mean nothing like Canada or the North Pole but for us they are cold so we thought we’d treat ourselves to a litlle sumthin- sumthin before it’s too late, but something slitghtly healthier than the digusting mouth watering double scoop vanilla ice cream, with chocolate sauce dripping down it as the the choc dip stick glistens in the sun and the sprinkles of tiny nuts are scattered on it like beautiful Autum leaves falling in a picturesque sunset setting... Ok ok I digress and you can tell we might not always have the best intentions when it somes to ice-cream but you know what? We’re willing to change and find healhty alternatives and thisjust the start you’ll need for winter. 18

Adjust sugar to taste depending on how ripe your fruit is. Following the directions for your ice cream maker, transfer this mixture into it and churn for about 25-30 minutes. Eat as soft serve, or place in freezer for addition 2-3 hours so it firms up.

The story of beauty is a long and drawn out one similar to that of Adele’s cat eye (only the fans will get it). It’s an art or maybe even a science for those who do this as a form of employment. 1 5T r a v e l T A N Z A N I A TANZANIA officially the United Republic of Tanzania (Swahili: Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania), is a country in Eastern Africa within the African Great Lakes region. It is bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north; Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west; Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south; and by the Indian Ocean to the east. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, is in northeastern Tanzania. Tanzania had a population of 51.82 million in 2014 is composed of several ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. Tanzania is a presidential constitutional republic, and since 1996, its official capital city has been Dodoma, where the President’s Office, the National Assembly, and some government ministries are located. Dar es Salaam, the former capital, retains most government offices and is the country’s largest city, principal port, and leading commercial centre.Tanzania was a one party dominant state with the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party in power until 1992 with the change of the constitution I N S E R T S F R O M T H I S A R T I C L E TA K E N F R O M : H T T P : // W W W. which then allowed for the formation of other political parties. Tanzania is mountainous and densely forested in the northeast, where Mount Kilimanjaro is located. Three of Africa’s Great Lakes are partly within Tanzania. To the north and west lie Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake, and Lake Tanganyika, the continent’s deepest lake, known for its unique species of fish. The eastern shore is hot and humid, with the Zanzibar Archipelago just offshore. The Kalambo water falls in the southwestern region of Rukwa are the second highest uninterrupted fall in Africa and are located near the southeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika on the border with Zambia. The Menai Bay Conservation Area is Zanzibar’s largest marine protected area. There are over

100 different languages are spoken in Tanzania, making it the most linguistically diverse country in East Africa. Among the languages spoken in Tanzania are all four of Af

rica’s language families: Bantu, Cushitic, Nilotic, and Khoisan. Swahili and English are Tanzania’s official languages A highly multilingual country, Swahili is used in parliamentary debate, in the lower courts, and as a medium of instruction in primary school; and English is used in foreign trade, in diplomacy, in higher courts, and as a medium of instruction in secondary and higher education, although the Tanzanian government plans to discontinue English as a language of instruction altogether. In connection with his Ujamaa social policies, President Nyerere encouraged the use of Swahili; as a means of unifying the country’s many ethnic groups.Approximately 10% of Tanzanians speak Swahili as a first language, and up to 90% speak it as a second language. Most Tanzanians thus speak both Swahili and a local language; many educated Tanzanians are trilingual; also speaking English. The widespread use and promotion of Swahili is contributing to the decline of smaller languages in the country.Young children increasingly speak Swahili as a first language, mostly in urban areas.

As one of South Africa’s most beloved cheese brands, Lancewood® is a key ingredient in that most revered of local pastimes: the braai. It was a natural step, therefore, for Lancewood® to sponsor the popular reality TV series, Ultimate Braai Master, as it entered its fifth season. By simply sending a food emoji to Lancewood®’s Facebook page via private message, the Lancewood® bot instantly responds with an interesting recipe or practical tip related to the emoji.

For example, Clarissa* sent the brand a strawberry emoji and the bot responded with a recipe for fruit cheese salad with strawberry vinaigrette – a completely different and unexpected twist on the traditional braai salad! So by harnessing the power of real-time social media engagement to provide relevant and original content to fans, Lancewood® instantly turned the Ultimate Braai Master viewing experience into a far more dynamic and engaging event.

In a digital age where social media and ‘selfies’ reign supreme, it was only a matter of time until digital photo booths were introduced into quick service restaurants (QSR). Burger King and Dunkin’ Donuts have become the latest brands to install a custom digital photo booth in their N1 City outlet in the Western Cape. As kids enter the photo booth, pop-up prompts on the screen take them through a basic three-step process to have their photograph taken. After the countdown that gets them ready to pose and smile for the camera, each image is digitally stored on a cloud-based server. The photographed subjects are then given the option to share their digital image via Facebook, Twitter or email. All images are branded with the company logo before being sent to social media channels.

Buy one give one office space “A new project brings the buy one give one concept to property. Buy Give Work allows businesses to subsidise and share their office space. For every space purchased, one will be given away to a non-profit serving the local area, an early stage start-up, or for an experimental community-led idea. The advantages for non-profits are clear. But the idea also offers clear benefits to businesses that, along with a greater sense of purpose, can gain insight from the diversity the relationship brings.” bizcommunity. com Image credit: ©pixabay

NANDOS- THE FIRE STARTER NANDOS So every time I see Nandos I have to admit I laugh, well more liek giggle simply cause I think of every ridiculously hilarious or just ridiculous advert I’ve ever seen from them. I still remember my early encounters with Nandos, mainly because of a hot guy who worked there but I digress... I remember actually watching my chicken actually being flame grilled and thinking this is the transparency we need at all restaurants/food outlets, I wont mention any names (McDonalds and Chicken Inn). But it was an experience from the smell of spices surging through the waiting area, to the orange flame that appeared on the grill from time to time. It was different and it still is. In 1987 to be exact, it was the PERi-PERi sauce that inspired Fernando Duarte to invite his friend Robbie Brozin to a humble Portuguese eatery in the heart of Rosettenville, South Africa to try some mouth-watering PERiPERi marinated and basted chicken. It wasn’t just the best chicken Robbie had ever tasted; it was love at first bite! Since opening its first restaurant in 1987, Nandos has expanded to over a thousand locations in 30 countries on five continents. Its success secrets may well lie in its maransion, similar to its movieer franchise model. Brooklyn was chosen for its first studio due to the surrounding demographic of artists and early adopters, the c o m p a n y said.

Marketing Nando’s’ numerous provocative yet witty commercials, such as an ad featuring a dimwitted busty blonde and a provocative advert which highlighted the fact that most of the tribes in South Africa were once foreigners at some point except the Khoisan people and therefore no one is in the position to be xenophobic. Nando’s’ flagship flamegrilled Peri-Peri chicken is a hit among Africa’s young and hip. Nando’s meals are premised on traditional Mozambiquan-Portuguese dietary patterns and spices such as the ‘Pili Pili’ and not only have they perfected these spices they also manufacture a range of sauces which are sold in Nando’s restaurants and in supermarkets.

ECONET- THE DREAM OF A DREAMER

Strive Masiyiwa is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Econet, a diversified global telecommunications group with operations and investments in over 15 countries. His business interests also include renewable energy, financial services, media and hospitality.. . Masiyiwa serves on a number of international boards, including Unilever, Rockefeller Foundation, the Council on Foreign Relations’ Global Advisory Board, the Africa Progress Panel, the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board for Sustainable Energy, Morehouse College, Hilton Foundation’s Humanitarian Prize Jury and the Kenjin-Tatsujin International Advisory Council. He is one of the founders, with Sir Richard Branson, of the global think tank, the Carbon War Room, and a founding member of the Global Business Coalition on Education.

ECONET ZIMBABWE Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is Zimbabwe’s largest provider of telecommunications services, providing solutions in mobile and fixed wireless telephony, public payphones, internet access and payment solutions. Econet launched its network on the 10th of July 1998 and listed on 17th September 1998. It is one of the largest companies on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange in terms of market capitalisation. The company continues to upgrade its network to carry more subscribers, and further widen its geographical coverage, which is already the most extensive in Zimbabwe. In 2009, the network became the first operator in Zimbabwe to launch data services under 3G technology. Ok, Econet owns almost everything in Zimbabwe ( women and children included (ok we’re just joking, but it is one of the biggest employers in the whole ofZimbabwe) and they are determinded on conquering Africa, with the introduction of Kwese which already has rights to broadcast NBA games and they even most recently signed a deal with Sean Combs aka P.Diddy/Puff Daddy/Puff Daddy Combs to

show his new channel Revolt’s content on the Kwese platfrom as well. Kwese has even gone as far as to have Kwesefied a digital content platform highlighting African stories from African youth. ‘The company’s key infrastructure at the start of 2010 included three switches. In 2009, Econet began building an extensive fibre optic network, and also commenced an accelerated rollout of other key network infrastructure. Key subsidiaries and associates of Econet are Liquid Telecom, the largest internet service and access provider in Zimbabwe, and Transaction Payment Solutions , a leading provider of financial transaction switching, point-of-sale and value-added support services. In line with its Christian-based vision and mission, Econet has a broad strategy for social and community investment, run under the “Econet in the Community” banner. Through these programmes, Econet supports a diverse range of charitable causes, which include children orphaned by AIDS/HIV, religious and church organisations, as well as an its annual scholarship program that provides financial assistance to the brightest students selected from schools,

in the country’s 10 provinces under the Joshua Nkomo Scholarship Fund (JNSF). ue to the surrounding demographic of artists and early adopters, the company said. pt will first come to Brooklyn, IMAX says — if successful — it plans to license the studio for expansion, similar to its movie theater franchise model. Brooklyn was chosen for its first studio due to the surrounding demographic of artists and early adopters, the company said.’. -econet.co.zw Funny story is that Econet also owns Steward Bank which enables them to be able to run Ecocash which runs like MPESA (for our East African friends) and in simple terms, very simplistic terms it’s mobile money. Ecocash has basically taken over and caused the fall of banks, yes in Zimbabwe Banks are falling and fast although they’ve tried to catch up Econet definitely hit the ground running is miles ahead. Any other mobile networks I hear you say? Yes they are but they are no competition for Econet to be honest. I guess that’s the thing about competing with a dreamer, you may have more money, more infrastructure but by shear will and love of the dream they will out accomplish you. Simple. Truth. 33
