Young Powerhouse

LootLove as she is fondly known to her fans is a South African media personality, she’s a new mummy of twins (which is our Editors #Mumgoals... not sure how achievable that it but yeah she can dream can’t she). Not only is Lootlove a Mother, but she’s also one part of a power couple with South African rapper Reason. She’s come a long from presenting on SABC 1’s Live Amp music show which was one of the biggest music shows in Southern Africa, to MCing at major events, modeling, brand Ambassadorship and so much more and we’re here to give her story.

Luthando Shosha aka Lootlove is originally from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape and although she still has the skin of a 16year old she was born on March 9 1989, Luthanda has never been short on inspiration being raised by 2 powerful women, her grandmother until the age of 8, then moving to Joburg with her mother where she attended Collegiate Girls High School before going on to study Interior Design at Design School Southern Africa (DSSA) in the city of gold Johannesburg. Unfortunately due to financial challenges Luthando wasn’t able to finish her studies and had to return home where she started taking part in beauty pageants leading to her involvement in promotions in Port Elizabeth.

Lootlove got her first entry into the entertainment industry after being recruited at Kingfisher FM for voiveovers and then being invited to an orientation at station, as luck would have it a vacant Dj space opened up after a Dj wokring at the station left allowing her to forray into the world of radio and there her official media journey began. “In 2012, Luthando Shosha entered the SABC 1 Live Presenter search competition which she won and broke into the mainstream South African entertainment industry. She debuted on Live AMP on May 18, 2012

besides Television personality Bonang Matheba.”

Revlon and the many great work related instances but also because she found out she was expecting Lootlove went on to become the twins and this year the bundles of main presenter of Live AMP with joy safely arrived to her and her Dj Warras and the duo definitely Hip Hop boyfriend Reason. added a new cool spin to the King Loot as she’s now called show. probably because of her shear determination and will power to After a number of years working dominate the media lanscape has on Live AMP she decided it was definitely had an amazing career time to venture out, after years so far, even volunteering some of trying she finally got her big of her time to spend empowering radio break leveling up to work young people, she’s only getting at Metrofm. Her voice is definite- started (we feel) and we can’t ly one of the most recognisable wait to see what else she has in with her smooth, buttery tone store. keeping you intrigued but at ease in the conversation. In 2017 Lootlove was annouced as shoe brand ‘Footwork’s’ brand ambassador she was quoted as saying “With this being my first major brand advocacy campaign, I’m so excited and humbled” she went on to say “I’ve been working hard on growing and on empowering women who relate to me, my work and beliefs... this journey is a blessing. I hope people wil love the 2017 winter shoe range.” Not only was that the beginning of even bigger things for King Loot, she then went on to become one of the faces of Revlon which has seen the likes of Halle Berry, Ciara, Gwen Stefani and much more also named as previous faces of the brand. 2018 was definitely an amazing year for Luthando not only because of the phenomenal opportunity with

I’ve been working hard on growing and on empowering women who relate to me, my work and beliefs.

Editor’s note Have you ever wondered if your goals are actually your goals? I’d been asking myself this question during my hiatus (from the magazine). Are your dreams the result of what you were told as a child by others, for example you talk a lot you should be a lawyer, or you’re really tall you should be a model? Sometimes truthfully we haven’t really picked our goals, we’ve just been conditioned into them, whether it’s society, family or just by circumstance, it might actually be that your goal is not the actual thing your heart is searching for. I ask this question early in the year because many of us have goals/to do lists/New Years resolutions that we think we should be doing but somehow we don’t feel deeply connected to them. As an Editor my job isn’t to just tell you whats in the magazine , you have the table of contents for that, my job is to give guidance to my audience through the stories published in this magazine whether these are visual or written stories. So I’m bascially here to tell cool stories that will help add

value to your life. A new part of our wish list is a product that gives back when you buy it. If our need to shop can help someone live a better life out there, that is an awesome bargain for us. What you put into your body really counts, food is perceived as pleasure and because of that we’ve added some awesome recipes that might not be a vegan diet but are also not on the ‘banned by Virgin Active gym’ list.. yes we think that balance is a necessity. We also have a brilliant, powerhouse woman in this edition, who’s worked for multination companies like Beats by Dre, Uber and Apple (yup we were not playing when we said POWERHOUSE!) and her name is Bozoma A. “Boz” Saint John, read more of her story in the Powerhouse segment. We look at how Tv died RIP Television and how luxury car manufacturers need us, our insights and buying power for the automobile industry.

Although the DA is still the official opposition they saw a decline in their votes, this could be due to them losing powerhouses like Lindiwe Mazibuko, Patricia De Lille (former Mayor of Cape Town and now Good party leader) as well as Helen Zille, who most would say gave them their biggest challenge weakening the “The ANC won a majority in the party with what some would say was National Assembly with 58 percent discrediting it from within with her of votes, a drop from the last national racist tweets. “The Kenyan General elections were held in Kenya on 8 August 2017 to elect the President, members of Parliament and devolved governments. The initial results indicated that incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta was re-elected with 54% of the vote. His main opponent, Raila Odinga, refused to accept the results and contested them in the Supreme Court, which led to the results being annulled and fresh elections being ordered to be held within 60 days.” As the results of local and parliamentary elections were deemed valid only the position of President was up for re-election with the date slated for the 17th of October which was then moved to the 26th of October 2017.

R I P TO THE TELEVISION

( A S I F W E D I D N ’ T A L R E A D Y K N O W T H AT )

Okay okay before you all start saying you hardly watch tv or haven’t watched a proper television show since the Power Rangers (the real ones not the new ones), hear me out, there were still a number of great shows on Television that were a redeeming factor and kept many of us glued on for those shows. Examples of these were award shows which were predominantly screened live on television networks then possibly later shown online, etc. I think if it was actually up to the award shows they’d continue to keep to the tried and tested formula of live tv events but alas Gen Zs will tweet nothing of the sort, so they’re stuck between a hard case of money from the networks and viewership from younger audiences. Netflix series like‘Orange is the new black’, ‘The strange’ and so many other shows are original Netflix shows, I mean Netflix has become so dominate that people refer to asking someone over on a date as ‘NETFLIX and chill’ .. ok the chill part of that statement has so many more meanings to it dependent on the person. When your name becomes a common cultural phrase just know you’ve made it in life or made such a huge impact on society that youv’ve shifted a cultural perspective. “It’s hard to keep up with the many devices and apps people now use to watch shows. And there is a host of material from Silicon Valley that is competing for viewers’ attention, in-

cluding Google’s YouTube, Facebook thing, with sharing transportation and Netflix. It all adds up to a precalled Uber, to sharing accommocarious situation for broadcast TV.” dation called AirBnB. www.nytimes.com/

“Companies love digital advertising because it gives them the ability to target ads based on their own lists of customers — like holders of store loyalty cards — and profiles like “first-time car buyers” or “people who like foreign travel.” And they want that kind of capability on TV, too. That desire has prompted four competing media companies — NBCUniversal, Turner, Viacom and Fox — to work to standardize the language and some of the data sets that they use, hoping to make it easier for brands to buy crossplatform advertising with them.”

Tv has also always had high barrieres to entry which the internet and companies like Netflix are doing away with, diverting quality content to them. If bigger networks like NBC would have scooped Netflix in it’s infancy we might be talking about the evolution of Tv and not it’s death. Millinniels and Generation Z’s are looking for a way to personnalise their experience and watching habits and this is one of the reasons that Tv is in the latter stages of its death,

www.nytimes.com/

That’s it, digital offers so many things that the standard network just cannot or simply doees not right now. Although Networks/ Tv are playing a catch up game like allowing people to connect to internet through Tv sets, digital allows people to share content easier and this appeals to millennials and Generations Z who love sharing content and live in a sharing economy with almost every-

Women’s Health

Do fashion and health connect? Is there a synergy or a corrolation bewtween what we wear duing exercise and how much we exercise? “Does the clothing we wear influence our own behavior and the way we think and act?” According to their 2012 study, the answer is a firm yes. The two researchers coined the term “enclothed cognition” to describe the mental changes that we undergo when we wear certain clothing. Volunteers for the study were either outfitted in a lab coat or given nothing special to wear, and then performed attentionrelated tasks—at which those wearing lab coats proved significantly more successful.” www. theatlantic.com we’re in a season of wearables of tech in clothes but what about the actual clothes we’re wearing. This includes things like waist trainers, bra’s, leggings etc. The correct type of clothes though, not just pretty looking clothes... the right size bra, that not only protects but lifts and firms, the right size pants that not only appeal aesthitically but also firm areas that most women try to hide like buttocks and tummy and lovingly firm them up allowing us the freedom to light our arms up without fear of the dreaded muf-

fin top bulging out and getting a little look back at it action allow women to exercise with confidence and as robustly as they want not fearing the constant stares of passers by.

“Fitness apparel megalith Lululemon would seem to agree. Their endeavor to outfit the world in their $82 Wunder Unders has been incredibly successful. They certainly deserve a chunk of the credit for the recent activewear explosion, though the company did alienate some of its potential clients when its founder said its clothes aren’t meant for some women’s bodies. Wearing yoga pants on the sidewalk, to the grocery store, to class—wherever—used to be a thing to be mocked. No longer. Now, it’s commonplace. “ “According to an NPD report, the activewear market had grown 7 percent over the previous year. In the same time, the general apparel market grew only 1 percent. More companies than ever now understand that women want both fashion and function in their gym

clothing, and affordably-priced alternatives are everywhere.”

Active wear is in and thanks to beauty, lifestyle and health bloggers women have more information and options than ever to suit their needs. Now big girls, small girls and all of us girls in between have the confidence not just to take a one size fits all clothing brand approach that doesn’t take into account the intricacies of different body types, ethicities, religions and their dynamics such as Hijabs for Muslim and conservative women, now women can personalise and chose from brands who are taking stock of us and all our beautiful diversity. So to answer the question the answer is Yes, clothes matter cause when you look good, most times you feel confident enought to tackle anything thrown at you in the gym even by your ‘sweet before workout’ trainer who insists of burpes as a fun exercise whilst slowly crushing any ounce of arrogance you had in you that you’d nail todays workout.

Doth clothes maketh a woman? 25

I’ve invested my time and money into several businesses, which I love and have always wanted to venture in such as Public Relations, Marketing, Blogging, Real Estate and quite recently Organic Farming. The Orgella brand is however commonly recognised for its work in the PR, Marketing and Social Media Management space through our work with corporate, celebrity and lifestyle brands. The company started off with an entertainment blog, Orgella Entertainment, and the success of the blog made it easier for me to launch the rest of my companies when the time was right. The vision for the work I do has always been to change people’s lives by empowering them to be independent, I’m a social entrepreneur who thrives on making great business moves that not

only translate in financial success but also in the development of our youth, country and great African continent. I read somewhere that you said you’ve never sent a C.V in your life, how could you be so sure of yourself at such a younge age?

I was sure I wouldn’t fail because I believe I was born an entrepreneur. It’s not something I discovered along the way and just decided to give it a shot. I had been preparing almost throughout my high school and university years to start my own company. I came up with my company name around the age of 15/16 after I was inspired by Oprah’s “Harpo” company name, hence I also used my named backwards. And because I’m not one to just stick to one thing, I love trying new things, I found myself with multiple ideas with led to the different companies that I own today. There’s not a single entity that I launched without passion, and that passion always came before the money. At 21 years old, which just R7000 to my name, I took a leap of faith, trusting in God and believing that I will not fail and I became my own. I haven’t looked back since. We’re all about supporting other women and African brands so who/what inspired you and who from a strategy point of view is kicking butt? My biggest inspiration is Oprah Winfrey. She embodies everything that represents strength, courage, resilience, maturity, grit, wisdom and women empowerment… and she’s a proud black queen. It’s women like her, alongside my mother Meriam Dinkwanyane and late grandmother Sebootse Dinkwanyane who have shaped me into the woman that I am today both at home and in the office. I

have always been surrounded by great women who understood their purpose and where never afraid to share the downfalls in order to build me up. This would explain why I too am passionate about helping young women and men become better version of themselves through my online mentorship platforms. In terms of African brands that are doing well… We have so many to choose from but at the top of my head I just though of Woolworths and Nandos. You work with a lot of awesome brands, what would your advice be for women looking to get into business and the manner in which they brand themselves? For any woman looking to get into the type of businesses I am doing or just business period, I would advise them to be honest with themselves, to believe and what they can do and what they have to offer and to never wait on anyone else to validate their potential, purpose or greatness. It takes a lot of courage to venture into business and to hold up a leadership role and it’s important that they know the difference between leadership and just being a “boss”. They ought to lead by example, be prepared for failure as much as they prepare themselves for success and most importantly, it’s no secret that my secret to success is God and hard work, those are the two most important things throughout my journey as a young female entrepreneur that have yet to fail me and I know for sure that they never will. Has there been anything in life and business that you feared to deal with but eventually did? How did you conquer your fears? I think at one point in my life in my early 20’s I developed a sudden fear of “being too successful”, by this I mean being “too much” for a man to handle or for my peers to genuinely sup-

port. I spent about two years downplaying my success because I didn’t want to come across as the girl who had it all, the girl who work harder than her male companion or the girl who was just successful and lonely. But after long conversations with my mother, I was reaffirmed that I shouldn’t downplay myself and that the people who truly love me would accept and be proud of the person that I am and the one that I am working on becoming. Success can only turn ugly if we stop being humble but it’s nothing to be ashamed of. So now, I proudly share my success stories, rise to the top and the hurdles I encountered along the way knowing that it will inspire someone. I’m grateful for my success at such a young age and I remain humble knowing that everything I’ve achieved isn’t by my own doing but through God who enables me everyday to be great. If you could give your 18 year old self any piece of advice what would that be? If I could go back in time and give an 18 year old me advise it would be “One day when you r dreams finally come true, don’t downplay yourself. Celebrate every milestone without losing sight of the long-term goal/ “the bigger picture”. Bask in you greatness because you deserve it.” How far have you gotten in using that advice? After the little stint I ha, LOL! So far, so good. I’m literally living my life like it’s golden, unapologetic and enjoying every moment. I’m basking in my greatness, living purposefully and still very much focused on the bigger picture. To sum it all up, I’m grateful to be living my dreams. Everyday is a work in progress for our lives and purposes what does a day in the life of Allegro look like? Most days I’m up around 7am, head to the gym around 8am for an hour. If this does not happen I’m up just before sunrise, I make a cup of tea and watch the sunrise, imagine the day ahead, center my energy though

prayer and meditation, get ready for a day of meetings at the office or around town, catch up with a client or mentee over lunch, get some admin work (contracts, presentations etc.) done, it’s Monday or Friday, I leave the office early to get ready for church later that evening. I work better in the evenings, so I like to work late too and some days not open my laptop at all when I get home. Take my heels, bra, makeup and wig off, freshen up, cook dinner while I have my mother on speaker over the phone and finally snuggle up as I catch up on my favourite series’ or read. My days are always so different but this would kind of describe one of them. If you could employ any 5 people in the world who would they be and why? I don’t have a list. I would employ any 5 people that have the will to succeed, a genuine heart for loving and helping people, purpose driven goals, leadership skills, loyalty, great work ethic, people who work well under pressure and value team work. I like people who embody those characteristics, the world needs more of them and I certainly will need more of them as my team and I build this empire. What business or onvestment advice do you have for young Africans? Invest in the future of Africa, don’t think about money alone or your own selfish material goals. Think about the generations coming after you and always remember how you want to be remembered. We can make money while making a great difference too. And also, work hard and smart; and don’t forget to lift your prayers higher because if there’s one thing I live by it’s this… “Prayer and hard work have never failed me”. Special thanks to Allegro for a wonderful interview, she’s a woman on a mission and the world is truly her oyster

NEW LUXURY FOR WOMEN

EV8 engines, sleek design, astronomical amounts and the thrill of speed, these words typically were written with men in mind. The marketing of cars to women usually revolved around words such as safe, easy to..., child friendly or the words it also comes in pink, well manufacturers have woken up to smell of the Feminists are leading this here conversation coffee and it seems they just might like (well they really have no choice). “Women are driving the CUV [crossover utility vehicle] revolution among luxury brands,” says Marc Bland, a vice president for diversity and inclusion at IHS Markit. “They have made luxury SUVs better sellers than luxury sedans ever since Lexus introduced the midsize RX in 1998.” www.iol.co.za Car manufacturers have had to change their strategy on reaching the new millinniel and generation Z women as well as women in many nations which were more conservative but now allow women in the drivers seat. “The Rolls Royce Phantom at 20 feet long, appealed to those who, in accordance with Shariah law, preferred to remain distant from their male driver. But now that Saudi women will be able to legally operate vehicles, as of June 24, 2018, smart observers expect the 3-ton

$450,000 V-12 coach to be overtaken in popularity by something rather more fun, such as the sporty two-door Rolls-Royce Wraith. (That car costs $320,500—no one is expecting these women to scrimp.)” www.iol.co.za . Now that many Middle Eastern women will be allowed to drive themselves , women will be picking their own cars, with their own tastes and preferences. Car manufacturers now have to interrogate how they market to this new highly lucrative group of women, this group of women who may not have previously been studied. Women are also driving at younger ages than previous generations and some would say these younger women have radically different views on cars and societal norms. For car manufacturers the clock is ticking in regards to which car manufacturer will hit the nail on the head and aptly truly target these young women innovatively and correctly. Car manufacturers ideally start advertising to and targeting men as toddlers, hence animated movies like ‘Cars’ which had clear brand affliations and indirect suggestions about each car. Although the movie ‘Cars’ did feature female characters there is yet a brand that will only target young girls basing the whole engagement just on girls and cars.

“Last year, Aston created a female advisory panel to review current and future products and give feedback to shape vehicles. A hypothetical customer named Charlotte—a “wealthy and attractive American woman in her late 30s”—is the target audience for cars like the peppy 2017 DB11 Volante convertible, priced at $216,495. The marque is targeting a valuation of as much as £5 billion ($6.9 billion) in a potential initial public offering, according to Bloomberg News. Investors will have an eye on Aston’s planned expansion into the SUV segment, starting in 2019.” www. iol.co.za

Luxury cars are just as important and desirable for women as they are for men and it’s about time car manufacturers took stock of our aspirations, wants and needs holistically today and in the future.
