SHANA News SOMALIA TRUCK BOMBING THE SAGA CONTINUES

The death toll in a double bombing in Somalia has climbed to 358 people, Security Minister Mohamed Abukar and Information Minister Abdirahman Omar Osman said Friday. The truck bombings occurred October 14, in Mogadishu, the capital city. The initial vehicle bomb destroyed dozens of stalls and the popular Safari Hotel in the heart of the city. Minutes later, a second vehicle bomb went off nearby.

The warning said al-Shabaab and the statement said.-CNN ISIS “operate with relative impunity throughout large parts of the country, including Mogadishu, and attack civilian, military, and government targets.” The White House issued a statement condemning the attack, calling terrorist organizations “the enemies of all civilized people.”

Abukar and Osman said 56 people are still missing and 228 are injured, with 122 of the most seriously injured flown to Turkey, Sudan and Kenya for treatment. Rescue workers have combed through rubble in searching for victims. Two Americans were killed in the blast, the US State Department said. There has been no claim of responsibility in the bombings. Mogadishu, a large city on the east African nation’s coast, has endured high levels of violence for years. Al-Shabaab, an al Qaeda-linked terror group, has carried out several deadly bombings. Last August, the US State Department warned Americans to avoid traveling to Somalia because of widespread terrorist and criminal activity.

“The United States stands with the people and government of Somalia in their commitment to defeating these groups, ensuring the security of their people, and rebuilding their country,”

Reading Corner Bonang MathebaFrom A to B

So... we love us some ‘B’ (B being Bonang) but the first edition of this book was so fabulous. Readers can be very picky people and when you’re a celebrity they don’t take it on easier on you than when your occupation is one of a journalist or authour. Unfortunately Ms Matheba’s first book was riddled with errors, from grammatical to even errors of dates and times in the book. Black Twitter was not having it (they are an extremely tough crowd to please) but we at SHANA are slightly easier to please. We requested an interview with Lonwabo Zimela ages ago and so on behalf of the magazine again we’re sorry, sometimes life gets the best of us. Unlike us Lonwabo ‘King’ Zimela has been soaring (look up his images for the recent Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Johnannesburg). We sent him over a few questions to find out who the man behind the camera is and we were pleasantly surprised.

I once asked myself if I would I still be doing photography if social media websites like Instagram and Tumblr weren’t around? And the answer was yes. I always aim to create work that’ll stand the test of time. What work would you want to be known for and how have you gone about achieving that?

She is the co-founder of The Local Collective Vlog on YouTube, which is affiliated to the Icon Endemol global network of multimedia content producers. Gum is a second-year film student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and is producing a new prism through which to view African contemporary art, fashion and culture. Gum is represented by the Christopher Moller Art Gallery and her latest projects include “uTwiggy”, “iSnap” and the famous “Black Coca” series, launched at the Johannesburg Art Fair 2015. This launch saw Gum collaborating with FNB as the official poster artist for the fair. The Cola series featured an array of projected identities that she beautifully spliced together with the global iconic Coke brand. Through the power of her visuals, Gum aims to show a pathway to embracing the West while remaining true and proud of one’s heritage. 8 Now was I bias in writing this piece? YES, yes I was... Do I vicariously sometimes live through this next young powerhouse? yes, yes I do. Am I lowkey sucking up in hopes see’ll see this one day? I think you guessed the answer to that by now. Seeing that I am a Bulawayo girl myself (pats myself on the back for no real reason) I was thoroughly excited to write about Elizabeth Zandile Tshele. I’ve always known her as ‘NoViolet Bulawayo’ and to be honest I actually thought that was her real name at some point. She’s an author I’ve come to respect not only cause of where she comes from but more so because of where she’s headed. Choosing the profession of author in Africa no longer holds that old world glamour and we all know that our parents secretly hope it’s no a profession we enter unless writing about business or something motivatinal or Nelson Mandela, cause lets face it anything about uTata honestly does sell. But for 36 (born October 12 1981) year old Elizabeth Tshele, that is the road she chose, the road less traveled. Born in the small town of Tsholotsho, Zimbabwe (yup I’m bias). she attended school In Bulawayo and is a former Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. Stanford is a very impressive University and you’re writing skills have to par excellence to get in. “She completed her college education in the US, studying at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, and earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Texas A&M University-Commerce and Southern Methodist University respectively. In 2010, she completed a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at Cornell

University, where her work was recognized with a Truman Capote Fellowship.” “In 2012 the National Book Foundation named her a 5 under 35 honoree . Her debut novel entitled We Need New Names was released in 2013, and was included in the 2013 Man Booker Prize shortlist.” Now not many of us have many firsts but ‘NoViolet Bulawayo’ aka Elizabeth Tshele became “the first black African woman and the first Zimbabwean to be shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.” “She also won the Etisalat Prize for Literature and the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award among other accolades. She has begun work on a memoir project. Bulawayo sits on the panAfrican literary initiative, Writivism’s Board of Trustees..” We love it when people give back and we are proud to have Elizabeth Zandile Tshele as a daughter of the soil. May not only her stories but her story inspire and change the lives of many.

W E ’ L L TA K E C R E AT I V I T Y I N T O O U R H A N D S . . . T H A N K Y O U V E R Y M U C H

The history of media, how it used to operate and how we consumed has drastically changed over the course of two decades, and this avalanche of change is only the beginning. Long gone are the days when we sat in front of the TV, desperately waiting for a show to come on, and that being our primary source of information and entertainment. The internet, worldwide web, computers and most recently the mobile phone have allowed the decentralisation of news, ideas and ownership. Today, anybody can become their very own SABC, DStv, MTV, e-TV, Mail & Guardian, Sowetan, Huffington Post, The New York Times, BBC, Metro FM. We the people are in control

of the minority have had underwhelming interaction or experiences with media. Most of us, people of colour, have had to vicariously explore possibilities through the gaze of white-man-lenses. In a Scubby article (http://scubby.com/african-modelrecreates-famous-modeling-campaignsstarring-kendall-jenner-gigi-hadidpromote-diversity-industry/), a black female model recreated famous modelling campaigns to highlight the lack of diversity in the modelling industry. This is in 2017 and we still have a diversity issue. #SMH When it comes to advertising, this seems to take a turn for the worst. How black people are represented is based on little, if any, but mostly none-existent immersion into black people’s lives. We are mostly depicted in the most demeaning ways, and what is surprising is that there seems to be no end to this misrepresentation. The one explanation for this is that the decision makers are not black. Taking control of media… and everything else

The biggest shift in media has been the fact that we as the people (ordinary civilians who previously didn’t have the means to produce content, and thus were in a position of just consuming) can now produce or create and dissipate information of our choice. The mobile revolution and the internet has allowed us to become #BringBackTheLand opinion-makers, shifters and challengers #WeAreComingForEverything through our own voice. These are not just hashtags. These are mplications for consumption: interwoven into the concept of power. When the youth say #WeAreComingThe implication there in with regards ForEverything, what they are actually to consumption is that we mostly consaying is that they are coming for power. sume and engage with content that we To take control of not just their lives, but decide is good for us. Simply put, that they want power, not just any power, consumption power lies in the people’s but financial power. Land is literally hands. This is particularly more accurate the mother of all things. Everything we with the youth. This is the primary reason consumer comes from the land. SHANA MEDIA

There are a lot of aspiring designers in Africa, and they produce some of the most amazing fashion or clothes. Maxhosa by Laduma (http://www.maxhosa.co.za) is

one South Africa’s finest fashion designers, using authentically african concepts and expression. He has taken control of his Xhosa culture, creativity and how it is represented. Where does he source his material from? Can you imagine if he had land where he could produce his own cotton? That’s why we want the land back, not because we are lazy and looking for handouts. We are want the land back so that we can give a helping hand to the rest of our brothers and sisters to get out of poverty. There is an avalanche of the black creative. Instead of relying on mass media to put them on; young black creatives are out there doing their own things. The beauty of this is that they realise that we live in an incredible error of individual power. Real power lies with the individual. We could literally start a movement using our cellphone from underneath a duvet cover, in the wee hours of the morning, waiting for the alarm to force us out of bed. The truth is; it doesn’t matter how mass media represents the minority. It doesn’t matter if it chooses to exclude us from being represented all together. We the people are now in control. We just need to realise the power that lies dormant with the internet and social media. We know that the internet can literally break or make you. We just need to be smart in our choices. BE AUT Y We dont’t usually celebrate our beauty buys but in this edition we have a first hand account of these products one by one, thanx to our beauty correspondent Michelle Lunga and we can’t wait for you to read the reviews.

Chanel Mademoiselle Chanel has always lived up to its timeless yet classic note. I fell in love with this signature scent, Mademoiselle on my 30th Birthday Nothing more classier than entering your thirties smelling like a million bucks literally …This has been my signature scent and might I add a little goes a long way . Floral of Oriental fragrances inspire Chanel Mademoiselle with both a feminine composition and elegant tune to it .This will always be my go to fragrance and is yet to fail me Price wise it may set you back a couple of dollars maybe more but rest assured its all worth it .

Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate One of the most important aspects of a woman’s face is her skin and the up keep of it is of vital importance. So about a year ago I got so burnt out with dealing with the dullness of my skin. The issues wasn’t my dedication to a skin regiment but the product that I wasn’t incorporating into my daily routine. I being to do my own research reaching and happened to run into Kiehls Products . Their line had virtually no advertisement as they relied on word of mouth. I being looking into one of their products which was a recovery cream . Know I must say we all have different variations of skin and we may have to try several products till we find something we can swear by and find the confidence to tell other people about . I want to give mu honest opinion based on my use of this product and say it began to do exactly what is was made to do which was to recovery my skin. I begin to use apply it before I went to bed as it is a night time cream and a couple of weeks of use I begin to see life in my skin. I know right amazing but yes I was dealing with dullness so this couldn’t have come at a better time. The product also works at reducing post acne scares which unfortunaly us as women of colour deal with. I urge all women to have a daily skin care regiment and do your research which your skin in mind. Price wise again yes it will cost you a couple of dollars but all you need to apply is a very minimal amount to get the job done… 22

MAC Lipstck Stone My latest obsession in lip color has been the matte lip color Stone by MAC and when I say obsession I mean in love with it..I have worn this coulour to ever other event and even to the grocery store to say the least. It is a muted greyish taupe brown colour and can be worn in in every season in my opinion .It has a velvety matte finish to it .I think most women can attest to the fact that we all have out “type” of lipstick colours that we feel comfortable wearing, mine happens to be the purples and the browns so this was an easy transition for me .Did I have doubts about how it would match my skin tone oh yes I did at first and I am sure I won’t be the only woman to run that question in their mind a couple of times but surprisingly I had no issues thus my obsession to it …One plus for me is that it is pigment rich so it will complement a wider variety of skin tones and I am glad MAC took into consideration its wider ranger of buyers .So if you are ready for something dering and new look no further than your local MAC counter and give it a try … Pure Shea Butter I am a fan of smooth skin and have always taken pride in achieving that. So when my local beauty store began stocking up on Pure Shea Butter I was ecstatic reason being is I knew the awesome benefits of using it as part of your daily regimen. I recommend always purchasing the raw Shea Butter mainly because there are no artificial ingredients . Shea Butter can also be applied to your scuple and I have used it over my edges and trust me have seen a difference again I must stress also look for the RAW shea butter .

Aussi Moist 3 Minute Conditioner. Having natural hair has afforded me the luxury of sampling different brands of conditioners on the market and recently as I was on my daily run to the local grocery store I happened to glace at the lable which read 3 Minute conditioner … My curiosity got the best of me and I am glad it did.. So fast forward to wash day, when I say this conditioner smells divine I mean DIVINE! .What this product does for one’s hair is it softens and detangles any knotted ends . It adds moisture to your hair and locks it in . I defiantly saw results after just one use and the beauty about this product is it s very cost effective. I don’t believe in expensive conditions but I do stand by conditioners that work and this product had me at hello.. 23

Bold colours matched with just matching or even miss matched fittings are having a moment in time and for many of us Africans they have ever since we were born. African design has always been filled with bright colours, that scream ‘WATCH ME WORK’, we see this in themes like the Sofiatoen era, MoTown for those in the United States of America and much more. From the beginning colour has been a way for us to express our vibrant cultural heritage taken from the art of bead-making, body art and intricate hair braiding and delicately put together tradtional attire, yes we are colour. When we saw the theme for this months interiors (although we understand it might be a bit much for some) we had that giddy child like happiness, looking for inspirations that could make up a roo like this. For some who may find the colours slightly daunting throw in some white main pieces such as a table, white walls and then have splashes of colour around your room in the form of cupboards, bins, lamps, etc.

For the colourful at heart it’s time to go all in, you can divide your space by painting different sides of your walls different colours this gives a different ambiance to each of the room, but be warned colours ellict different feelings so if its a working space research on the colours that help with productivity. A colourful counch as the main focus of the room is the cherry on the cake and you can always upholster it if you need a change. Remember colour is a full time commitment so if you’re going to do be sure you want it for sometime. But carpe diem and live in colour.

TECH

IOT OF INTERNET THINGS

The internet of things (IoT) describes a world in which ‘things’ that form part of our everyday lives contain microchips that can communicate through various networks. These things would include items like household appliances such as fridges and kettles to our clothing and wearables that can subsequently be used to measure our heart rate and ultimately our health. It is believed that this technology will help us interact with the world in ways that we can barely imagine but in my curiosity, are we replacing traditional ways of doing the simple things that make it enjoyable to be human? This is what I mean. In these early days of the Internet of Things (IoT), much of the focus has been on industrial applications, such as improving operations with selfgoverning machines, or standalone consumer products. Research shows that the focal point is moving away from items and more about ‘living services’ that let people program and connect smart devices however they want. For instance, using one of these living services, I can opt to set my fridge to detect when my fresh milk levels are low, a data alert is sent to my smart phone which in turn, it automatically makes an online order for me at my local store and fresh milk is delivered by a certain time the next day. Another instance would be; as I am driving and I approach my house, my smart car is connected to my smart garage door opener, which I’ve connected to my smart lock, which activates my smart thermostat that I’ve synced to my smart lighting system. All these

things start to take effect the moment I turn in to park my car – all the things I like to do when I first enter my house, all in a domino effect making my evening easier and lighter.

this induce a form of laziness and forgetfulness to the people who will eventually totally rely on these devices? Will our minds start to slowly fade as we no longer spark them up with to-do lists on a day to day basis? Will our children learn responsibilities from an early age without having The whole idea of the Internet of them do chores in the house? These Things is to always make sure the are all valid questions that remind us ‘things’ are about two steps ahead that technology should always be on of you at all time. In my opinion, for a leash and not the other way round, this to really be effective with the but until then, what we allow will least negative effects, their needs always continue. to be a balance in what technology should do for us and what decisions should be left for a person to make. People like IoT services that automatically do what they would otherwise have to do manually. One of the most popular programs— turning on interior lights when the sun is setting—is a good example of how smart, connected devices can be optimized to save people time and money. There are new products that can automatically adjust air-conditioners, heaters, and other devices that use electricity, depending on when people are more likely to need them only after the detectors have noticed that people are in the house. The investments being made to add sensors and other internet technology to home appliances— by established companies such as General Electric and Whirlpool, and start-ups like Chai Energy—suggest that rising supply will lead to greater demand. This is also another area where we might be willing to let devices and appliances track our behaviours so that they can learn about our preferences and predict our needs. Maybe the answers we need to start looking for early in this, will

TIPS FOR A SCHOLARSHIP

1. Research Find out the best scholarships fr your particular program, also what special conditions do you fit that can better help you get ahead of the crowds? e.g Are you financially disadvantaged? There is also a big push for women from minority groups, this could be an advantage for you.

2. Do the work It’s easy to just type in scholarships on Google but most scholarships are dependant or good if not excellent grades so although Google is our friend (most times) you have to make sure you get the grades so you at least qualify for the scholarship/grant.

3. Community work Community work is really underrted but very crucial in addition to one’s grades. The educational institutions want a person who’s well rounded and will contribute to society. If you don’t have anything you’re doing right now, don’t worry just get started, it’s as simple as tutoring a group a kids in maths or English or helping out at a community centre. So this holiday get busy helping it could be the deciding factor between your ‘A’s and another persons ‘A+’s’.
