For those of us in the Southern Hemisphere it’s winter and it couldn’t have come at a worse time to be honest (you all know COVID don’t play that) usually winter is a sombre time but it doesn’t have to be, here are a few of the things on our wish list for winter.

M E D I A TA K E : T H E J O U R N E Y
FUNGISAI Sitting here watching my babies play I’m reminded of how early we discover the things we like, that quickly turn into our dreams. I have three beautiful children and as I write this I am looking at my soon to be 7 year old daughter who has for the past couple of years insisted that when she grows up she wants to be a danseuse which is French for a female ballet dancer. I should take her seriously least I forget that at her age I wrote a letter to ZBC asking them to give me a job as a TV presenter. Today I am 33 years old and currently recognized as a Multimedia Broadcaster. Someone should’ve taken me seriously! When I didn’t get a response from ZBC I naturally assumed that they would call my parents one day. They never did. Growing up I was known by family members and my school as the dancer. This got me in trouble more often than I’d like to admit, Lol. I recall an incident in high school during consultation day or open day (depending on which side of the Vic falls you’re from) one of my teachers asked me in front of my parents what I wanted to be when I grow up. To my fathers dismay I responded ‘I wanna be an International Entertainer.’ When I look back on this I don’t think I knew exactly which part of the entertainment industry I was going to end up in.
I honestly didn’t care I just really wanted to end up in media. Fast forward to my 19 year old pregnant self after having been kicked out of my parents home on my way to meet my boyfriends family I realised that I had lost control of everything that made me, me. I had no say on whether I could continue living with my parents and I had to wait to hear from my then boyfriends family on whether or not they where going to take responsibility for the pregnancy. While I was being moved from place to place and meeting to meeting, while the elders where decided what they were going to do with the apparent ‘mess’ that my boyfriend and I had made I realised that nobody took a moment to ask ME what I wanted. I realised in that moment as I sat on the floor at another family meeting that I was going to have to bury any dreams I thought I had. And I did. A husband, 3 children, a different country, debt, depression and 11 years later as you can imagine life had gotten the better of me. I honestly had forgotten about that 15 year old that wanted to be in media let alone the 7 year old that wrote a letter to ZBC. I had been volunteering at an NGO called Set Apart International for about 2 years when I was asked to MC the annual
Conference. I remember asking one of the event organisers why they thought I would be great for the Job. All she said was she had a hunch. So I said yes and to my surprise one of the perks of being an MC at the conference was a free public speaking course with Inspired Dreams International. One of Zambia’s leading Public Speaking Training centres. I remember sitting in that class and arguing with God that He was crazy for making me do a course with all these ‘powerful’ people. Every one was either a lawyer, director of a company, doctor, human rights activist, manager at a bank or aspiring politician and there I was Fungisai Maronga a broke stay at home mom who was suffering from depression. What was I even doing there? Every class was an emotional and mental battle with myself, always questioning my abilities to deliver. Questioning whether or not I belonged there. Whether I deserved to be there since I chose motherhood over college. Even with all that going on internally I still woke up every day walked if I had to and showed up to my class. After a couple of training sessions I was top of my class and had acquired a public speaking certificate. I honestly took back all the terrible things I said to God in a conversation we had had about the
whole course. Being top of my class meant I got to do the Master Class for free. I took the class and there, is where I met the Director of Life TV. A local Tv Station that airs on Top Star channel 112. She was blown away by one of my presentations and asked me why I wasn’t on TV. Good question, right? It was as if a light bulb had been turned on, deep on the inside of me. After a couple of months she called me up and asked if I could come through for a screen test. I went and was given a job on the spot as a Presenter. I couldn’t believe it.

show up even if you don’t feel like it. A lesson I would soon learn as I began my career in media. Join me next week as I share on my journey in television, how I ended up on radio and what I have learnt thus far.

Sometimes we meet ourselves on a particular part of our journey and automatically assume that we know how it’s going to end or we know how it all goes down. The honest truth is we don’t. However we can always show up. And showing up no matter how beat down you are is exactly what will switch things up for you. My whole life till that moment was about showing up whether I knew it or not. I showed up for my children, I showed up for my husband, I showed up for my in laws. I showed up for my volunteering gig and also for my public speaking course. Who knew that what looked like denial was really just preservation while I was being prepared for the bigger deal. Lord knows there was no way I was going to end up in entertainment if I was ill prepared. Being in media requires the ability to

BUSINESS FIN D IN G T H E R I G H T BAN K FO R YO U The new year comes with new challenges this time, the pandemic has left many jobless, locked down and basically stuck. Banks have not been spared at all, although many people still use banks, banks have to find innovative new ways to provide services to their clients as they were almost ranked super spreaders due to their transactional nature. We still need banks for the most part in Africa or at least transactional money facilities, so where do we go from here as clients and banks wanting to find solutions... This article will be particularly interesting to African readers especially those who run small to medium sized businesses as well as entrepreneurs, the first question we should ask is ‘does my bank offer the best interest rates and diversity for what I want to do?’. Many of us have had to diversify our product offering or start side hustles or even totally new hustles during this pandemic and a critical question now is ‘how easy is it for me to transact online and for my clients to transact with me?’ A word to the wise, stay away from banks that do not have their online platforms in order, thats a big NO no, we are in the digital age and going into your bank everyday to try and rectify or clear online transactions is a big fat NO and at this point possibly life threat-
ening. For many Zimbabwean businesses just connecting a bank card to PayPal has proven to be an impossible task so when there is any bank or facility that allows you to do that then it’s first on the list for our sign up. What else should you be looking for in a bank? This may sound non essential but in these times how effective are they with problem solving online and over the phone, client services is critical right now, banks quick to answer social media questions, with advanced chatbots and AI on their websites and mutliple call center attendants is vital... yes I understand the call center agents need to be safe as well but if banks are serious they should be investing in blockchain technology which inter-links their customer service platforms so that call center agents can work remotely, most banks have had call center agents in different countries/cities anyway so they should be in a position to manage this.
people the people who kept our student accounts open longer than we should have but thats besides the point”... point is look at your transactional fees and make a note to speak to your friends and family with different banks, as well as research what other banks are charging. Lastly each bank has things they are good at so it’s advisable to open a number of accounts based off of the banks strong points, some banks are good with loans so if you’re going to take a loan then you might want to try them, some banks are good for business accounts versus personal accounts... you have the right to shop around don’t let a bank hold you hostage to the years you’ve been with them, this is not a marriage they do not consult you when raising bank charges, we suggest you do the same.
Another critical item right now for banks is how much are they charging per transaction? If we are going to be shopping from home and swiping for everything then how much is that going to be everytime we do? Honestly we know people who kept their student accounts as long as they could because transactional fees were so much lower and we don’t blame them, “we could be

LOST IN 2021? STILL FEELING LIKE 2020??? 2020 that could be a whole statement in itself because of how totally unexpected, depressing and emotionally draining it was for the majority of people in the world. The whole world at some point has been on lockdown whether voluntarily or involuntarily, the lockdowns have seen a rise in depression and higher cases of domestic abuse, it’s not only the fear of catching COVID 19 that plagues the mind it was the initial lack of information of how to act in order not to spread or catch COVID19 and also the sense of helplessness felt when you or a loved one caught it. More than anything the sense of helplessness is what mentally affected many of us.
2
We’re in 2021 now but there’s still a sense of uncertainity, how do we plan? for businesses that need foot traffic do they continue and risk it or do they let their businesses die to protect their staff and themselves? There are so many questions many of us are asking in these times but here are a few things to look out for to get your mind in a position of calmness and optimism about 2021: Invest Spend time investing in information, find out what statistics are reflecting in your area, certain periods result in spikes because of travel and engagement like holidays so be very weary of travel, engagement and opening your business doors during this time. the vaccine finally the vaccine roll out plan has started in many countries which could be a relief once we know how effective most of them are, there’s
also a number of COVID19 drugs on the market so the public will soon have access to them. It might be good to start planning for interactive events towards the end of year and not be overly optimistic in planning for them now. Seek professional help if you’ve been experiencing the following symptoms: They can include: - Trouble concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions - Fatigue - Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and helplessness - Pessimism and hopelessness - Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or sleeping too much - Irritability - Restlessness - Loss of interest in things once pleasurable, including sex - Overeating, or appetite loss - Aches, pains, headaches, or cramps that won’t go away - Digestive problems that don’t get better, even with treatment - Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings - Suicidal thoughts or attempts webmd.com/depression Develop new habits A new routine, new habits and even a lifestyle change can totally shift your mindset, in 2020 businesses like Uber Eats, Mr Delivery etc were definitely big winners as millions around the world took time for a little R&R
(Rest and Relaxation), the pounds packed on or we just got lethargic and kept the movement to a minimum. Today is the best opportunity to get back in shape, start moving and get that heart rate up, exercise is connected with high levels of productivity as it helps your brain release serotonin that helps improve your state of mind. Get a new group of friends Your friendships either blossomed or just withered away into the online hustle and bustle in 2020, some of us realised that we don’t actually have anything in common with our friends or significant others, the relationship was based more on activity than anything else, so now is the best time to build the types of relationships you actually want. Reach out to new people online that you feel you share the same values, drive, interests etc with. The online world is full of key relationships just waiting for you to tap into, a word of caution though is that people are busy so take it slow and build up some rapport with them first. Start afresh Out with the old and in with the new you. Brands all over the world are re-inventing themselves so why can’t you? Decide who you want to be and start working towards that. Get your list of goals and start slowly redefining who you are, maybe before 2020 you hadn’t actually decided who you want to be but what better time to make up your mind while the rest of the world is losing theirs.

H E A LT H B A L A N C I N G Y O U R I N TA K E We might not have access to the gym but we do have access to fruits and vegetables, we also have the ability to switch foods and choose better alternatives that are less processed and much healthier for our bodies, heres a few tips you can use to get your eating habits on the right track; Substituting fizzy drinks for juices or water: “Fruit and vegetable juices may help delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, especially among those at higher risk of the disease, a study found. In a small-scale experiment on healthy adult participants, the exclusive consumption of vegetable juice for three days seemed to alter the gut bacteria associated with weight loss. The participants’ body weight and body mass index decreased, while their general well-being increased. Pomegranate juice, known to be a heart-healthy juice, has been linked to the decrease of disease-contributing factors in patients with carotid artery stenosis (narrowing neck arteries).” healthykitchen101.com Replace your creamer with milk, Creamer is definitely a much quicker and easier alternative but milk is much healthier. You
could take it further and use soy milk or any other vegan milk if you want to be super healthy. Milk in itslef is a contested topic in regards to health so if you’re not comfortable drinking milk then find the right suppliment to add the much neeeded calcium to your diet. “Dark Chocolate If you are craving chocolate, you can try swapping your regular milk chocolate for a small amount of dark chocolate (portion size matters!). Dark chocolate that is made with at least 70% cocoa is not only delicious, but it also contains a high amount of antioxidants. Additionally, including dark chocolate in your diet may reduce your risk of heart disease.” nurturelife.com/ If you’re looking to still get your fix of fried or even baked chips then try the sweet potato alternative to normal potatoes. I’m definitely a fried chips fanatic, the type to drive through at 1am just for McDonalds chips, a familar voice always asks on the other side of the drive-through, “is that all?” and truly thats all I want from there, just my fix of fries. Now I know better and sweet potato chips will be my option everytime the cravings hit. Lastly and not least swapping certain sugary cereals for natural oats with honey instead of
sugar. “Oats are a nutritious cereal choice. They are commonly rolled or crushed and then consumed as oatmeal, or porridge. Since oats are whole grains, they are rich in fiber and important nutrients. A 1/2-cup (117-gram) serving of oats provides 4 grams of fiber and 68% of your daily needs for manganese, 18% for phosphorus and selenium and 16% for zinc (3). They also provide a significant amount of B vitamins, iron and magnesium (3). You can purchase pre-portioned and flavored oats at the store, but it is best to avoid these and make your own. Store-bought oats are often high in added sugars and other unhealthy ingredients.” healthline. com Most cereals are highly processed and have high sugar concentrations in them which includes food colouring etc although these give a sugar rush it’s definitely not a healthy one and sees you crash during the day so switch it up and get a natural sugar high with honey and get your fiber from the oats. There’s an awesome opportunity to get back on the healthy wagon as the new year gets started.
TESLA W H AT S T H E H Y P E
Tesla has come a long way from it’s first car in 2009 and the founding of the company in 2008 “Tesla, Inc. is an American electric vehicle and clean energy company”, the car has even made it’s way back to Musk’s home country of South Africa. CEO and the largest funder of Telsa Elon Musk is described as a genius and an innovator but we know that that doesn’t always translate into a great car. “According to Musk, the purpose of Tesla Inc is to help expedite the move to sustainable transport and energy, obtained through electric vehicles and solar power”, and is a “major installer of solar photovoltaic systems in the United States. Tesla is also one of the largest global suppliers of battery energy storage systems, from home-scale to grid-scale. Tesla installed some of the largest battery storage plants in the world”. Deriving their name from “inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla” it’s easy to see why Tesla is how “Tesla is ranked as the world’s best-selling plug-in and battery electric passenger car manufacturer in 2019, with a market share of 17% of the plug-in
segment and 23% of the battery electric segment “.wikipedia.com So why the big fuss over Tesla now? Well it’s the new Tesla Model 3 which is “Tesla’s long-awaited affordable entry-level car, designed to take on the best-selling likes of the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes C-Class, not to mention their slow-off-the-mark electric cousins. And thanks to Tesla’s viral, household name status and the ambition of the car’s features, the Model 3 has become a phenomenon. It sits below the Model S saloon in the range, and in Standard Range Plus guise, is priced from £40,490. That gets you rear-wheel drive, and a claimed 278 miles of range between visits to a public Supercharger, or your home wallbox, TopGear is also quoted as saying that the Tesla Model 3 “will outrun a Lamborghini Huracán up to the national speed limit” and was such a phenomena it became Britain’s best-selling electric car in 2020. Ok so what else is cool about Tesla? I think might have somethign to
do with the fact you can watch Netflix and actually chill in it, the Apps games connected to it and the much publicized and controversial autopilot or self driving mode. According to Topgear “Autopilot is merely an umbrella term for adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-following assistant and pedestrian-avoidance steering. All terribly useful and well-integrated, but nothing you can’t find in a BMW 3 Series and co” but “to get the full suite of Tesla cleverness, you’ll need to spend £6,800 on the Full SelfDriving Package”. So yes the Tesla does go to autopilot in theory but the critics are out when it comes to the execution of the self driving mode calling it slightly clumsy and somewhat hazardous in some instances. Our verdict is that Tesla is bigger than a car it’s a brand and affliated with a lifestyle, it’s best in it’s category and nothing so far has managed to beat it for the price and its total functional offering. We look forward to the future Tesla is already creating.

Who is Flavia? (For those who don’t know you... yet) Flavia is a servant of Christ first. A daughter and sister as well as a go getter that won’t stop until she’s made an impact. I am a businesswoman, creative strategist a Broadcast executive and an activist for women of colour. 2. What occupation did you want to be part of as a child? Were you always a creative at heart or is this something you stumbled across. I had always wanted to go into the medical field, being a Radiolosgist was my ultimate dream growing up! I had never imagined myself as a media person. The passion for film and television found me, and it soon became my happy place. 3. As Commissioning Editor for the M-Net, Local Entertainment Channels what does your day to day job entail? The long and short of it is that I am a project manager.

4. What was your first day on the job like? So nerve-racking, I nearly peed myself. Honestly.. I was a mess! 5. We read that you’ve helped 17 women launch their own businesses, what has your own entrepreneurial journey been like up till now? As someone who came from a hard and underprivileged upbringing, getting my first few jobs left me with so much debt, student loans and the bad financial choices I made to try combat my “black tax” as one salary (although it was good) was not enough for all my commitments. Going the entrepreneurial route amidst my great job, was as a result of trying to better my financial situation, what started off as a quick plan to clear debt, ended becoming a route that propelled me to financial freedom but most importantly PURPOSE! I teach women across the continent to do exactly what I do, and it is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my life. 6. Just dwelling on your awesome work with women, how do you help women in regards to being a business mentor? I present a business opportunity to the women, guide them through their business journey and become their brand manager and business partner as they work towards their financial freedom and personal growth. I hold their hand every step of the way. 7. How can other women be part of your program? They can reach out to me on social media (Flavia Motsisi on Facebook and BusinesswithFlavia on Instagram)
8. You’re also co-founder and board member of SWIFT an NPO organization that is committed to empowering women working in Film and Television, why did you feel the need to create an organization with this focus and what are your current projects? As a young black woman in the industry at the time, I didn’t feel safe, was hopeless and craved a safe space… a sisterhood tohelp me navigate through my career. It was evident that a lot of women in the industry fekt the same and that the need for a women advocacy organization was an essential need for us all. My current focus has been working with UN Women and the GIZ as well as the NFVF on the Gender Parity and Step it up for Gender Equality programs to best eradicate a lot of challenges that women face in the industry. 9. In 5years time what do you hope to have accomplished with SWIFT? I do believe that SWIFT will have a larger footprint in the rest of Africa by then and that most of the policies that have been and are being formed by the organization will be adopted on a global platform. 10. Not only are you soaring in the coperate world, you also run an online boutique, what made you start this particular business? I used to sell thrift coats from my boot 3 years prior to starting the boutique. My customer base grew and it was quite evident that me and my business model needed to grow as well.
“
what started off as a quick plan to clear debt, ended becoming a route that propelled me to financial freedom but most importantly PURPOSE! I teach women across the continent to do exactly what I do, and it is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my life.
”
11. How do you find the time to juggle running the online boutique and your other ventures? (Do you work with a team, do you schedule time, etc) As the saying *goes…“Do what you love, and you will never work a day in your life” I love what I do and live on nutritional supplements form my aloe healthy care range to sustain my energy and focus. I have also had to consciously sacrifice on engaging on a social life and activities that most of my peers do. It is so fulfilling….. however I would love an opportunity to finish at least one of the many books I started “reading” earlier on this year. 12. What’s one of your favorite things about being you? I love God uncompromisingly and I am resilient. 13. Please name one hard life lesson you’ve had to learn and what were your key takeaways from it? A few lessons I have learnt: Being a black woman requires strength. Nothing will get handed to you, you need to act on your faith. The road to the top Is very lonely. Not everyone that you are for; is for you and to never steer away from God, it always ends in hardship if you do. 14. If you weren’t doing what you’re doing now in terms of work what would you be doing? I honestly don’t know... I would probably be producing.
15. Lastly we ask all our amazing cover stars this but what advice would you give your younger 18year old self? Stop doubting yourself so much, your voice is your strength and it will become a solution to many people’s problems. Let it out and let it count! many thanks to Flavia for this awesome interview to shop at her boutique visit shop.foreverliving.com To connect with her on social media: @flaviamotsisi @businesswithflavia @boutiquebyflavs @be_healthy _aloe_vera
15 If you’re not using email as part of your mandatory work process or Google then you must be one of the very very few people in the world who can function without them, things like Facebook and LinkedIn have basically become part of the business digital toolkit when it comes to marketing and connecting in the new online world. What would be even more impressive is if you didn’t use these online platforms and made millions in your business and you weren’t trading in weapons or anything illegal then we’d be fully impressed... The world has definitely changed from 15 years ago actually it’s changed from even 5 years ago, the algorithms and AI now have most of our spending and online engagement habits down to a T and they’re not afraid to use them, just ask Alexa. We’ve come up with a list of online tools that we’ve found have helped many entrepreneurs in this COVID19 time and for the most part many of them are free but free is not always the best option when running a business as we have experienced with Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, etc the saying goes if its free you are the product.
BIZZY BUSINESS GOOGLE SUITES Google are the Kings of the internet, if you don’t have a Google account then you should (just joking we need to be paid a sponsorship fee to promote them that much). Google runs most of the internet and using their G Suite offer just opens up your work life to integrated solutions for email, storing data, setting calendared work, hosting online meetings and so much more.Due to their large reach their pricing for most of the tools offered in the G Suite is free or ver y affordable especially for new business.
GanttPRO “GanttPRO is an online project planning tool based on Gantt charts. It helps single users and teams from a wide range of industries to make project management processes easier, team collaboration – more efficient, and clients and stakeholders – more engaged. The tool has an unbelievably short learning curve. It already can boast of more than 500K registered users. Among their big clients, you will find Salesforce, NASA, Vodafone, DHL, and Sony. Price: It offers Individual (starts at $15 per user per month) and Team plans (starts at $5.90 per user per month).” proofhub.com
ZOOM How did we get from Skype to Zoom? No one really knows but whats clear is that the world is on Zoom, if you’re an entrepreneur or work in a collective space the chances of you using Zoom for an online meeting, conference etc during this pandemic are extremely high. Zoom is great for teams and meetings less than 100 if you’re looking for the fre option but has affordable pricing for 100+ peope in 1 meeting. Truthfully so much than work is happening on Zoom, there’s classes, live events like weddings and baby showers and even funerals, Zoom has become the go to video and meeting platform for more formal digital events and we’re here for it as long as we’re allowed to turn off our cameras and mute our mics.

TRA CAP
AVEL PE TOWN
When I think of Cape Town I think of the beaches, I think of Waterfront Mall, the beautifully coloured homes in Bo-Kaap, the chilled atmosphere most coastal cities have but also the diverse groups of people there from travellers to locals.” Cape Town (Afrikaans: Kaapstad pstat]; Xhosa: iKapa;) is the second-most populous city in South Africa, after Johannesburg, and also the legislative capital of South Africa. Colloquially named the Mother City, it is the largest city of the Western Cape province and forms part of the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality. The Parliament of South Africa is situated in Cape Town. The other two capitals are located in Gauteng (Pretoria the executive capital where the Presidency is based) and in the Free State (Bloemfontein the judicial capital where the Supreme Court of Appeal is located). The city is known for its harbour, for its natural setting in the Cape Floristic Region, and for landmarks such as Table Mountain and Cape Point. Cape Town is home to 49% of the Western Cape’s population. The city was named the World Design Capital for 2014 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design. In 2014, Cape Town was named the best place in the world to visit by both The New York Times and The Daily Telegraph. Cape Town has also been a host city for both the 1995 Rugby World Cup and 2010 FIFA World Cup, and annually hosts the Africa leg of the World Rugby 7s.” wikipedia.com After visiting Cape Town it’s easy to see why people fall in love with it, well except for the erratic weather it’s close to perfect.
Located on the shore of Table Bay, Cape Town, as the oldest urban area in the Western Cape, it was developed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a supply station for Dutch ships sailing to East Africa, India, and the Far East. Jan van Riebeeck’s arrival on 6 April 1652 established the VOC Cape Colony, the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Cape Town outgrew its original purpose as the first European outpost at the Castle of Good Hope, becoming the economic and cultural hub of the Cape Colony. Until the Witwatersrand Gold Rush and the development of Johannesburg, Cape Town was the largest city in South Africa. Cape Town is the economic hub of the Western Cape province, South Africa’s second main economic centre and Africa’s third main economic hub city. It serves as the regional manufacturing centre in the Western Cape. In 2011 the city’s GDP was US$56.8 billion with a GDP per capita of US$15,721. In the five years preceding 2014 Cape Town GDP grew at an average of 3.7% a year. As a proportion of GDP, the agriculture and manufacturing sectors have declined whilst finance, business services, transport and logistics have grown reflecting the growth in specialised services sectors of the local economy. Fishing, clothing and textiles, wood product manufacturing, electronics, furniture, hospitality, finance and business services are industries in which Cape Town’s economy has the largest comparative advantage. Cape Town has recently enjoyed a booming real estate and construction market, because of the 2010 FIFA World Cup as well as many people buying summer homes in the city or relocating there permanently. The city is a manufacturing base for several multinational
companies including, Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, Levi Strauss & Co., Adidas, Bokomo Foods, Yoco and Nampak. Most goods are handled through the Port of Cape Town or Cape Town International Airport. Most major shipbuilding companies have offices in Cape Town. The province is also a centre of energy development for the country, with the existing Koeberg nuclear power station providing energy for the Western Cape’s needs. The Western Cape is an important tourist region in South Africa; the tourism industry accounts for 9.8% of the GDP of the province and employs 9.6% of the province’s workforce. In 2010, over 1.5 million international tourists visited the area. With the highest number of successful Technology companies in Africa, Cape Town is an important centre for the industry on the continent. This includes an increasing number of companies in the Space industry. Growing at an annual rate of 8.5% and an estimated worth of R77 billion in 2010, nationwide the high tech industry in Cape Town is becoming increasingly important to the city’s economy. The city was recently named as the most entrepreneurial city in South Africa, with the percentage of Capetonians pursuing business opportunities almost three times higher than the national average. Those aged between 18 and 64 were 190% more likely to pursue new business, whilst in Johannesburg, the same demographic group was only 60% more likely than the national average to pursue a new business.” sourced wikipedia. My fondest memories of Cape Town have been hearing kombi/taxi conductors yelling Cape Town-Wynberg out the window as the taxis shuttle up and down, it just adds that little bit of humour to the day and makes the city feel more alive in all its diversity.

BRIEF NEWS WE THINK YOU SHO
Ugandan elections have become the tale of many African nations but thankfully not the majority where violence and voter suppression is clearly evident days leading to and after an elelction. “Two days before the January 14, 2021 elections, the Uganda Communications Commission ordered internet service providers to block access to social media. The next day, the government shut down internet access across the country for five days. Access to social media sites including Twitter and YouTube remains restricted. On January 16, the Electoral Commission declared President Yoweri Museveni, 76, the winner for his sixth term as president.
The day after the election, security officials surrounded the home of Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), his closest rival, and have since prevented anyone from going in or out. On January 18, security forces blocked access to his party’s head office in Kampala, allegedly to “counter any plans to violent demonstrations and mass riots.” hrw.org The internet being censored or switched off completely has become somewhat normal practice in Southern Africa with VPNs and alarming social media posts ensuing, whether the elections were truly free and fair lies with the people of Uganda, observers were widely quoted as saying the elections
were marred by violence and polling stations had various discrepancies the fact is Uganda has an official President who remains President Museveni. Important to note though is the high engagement by young people in this election coming out in their numbers and taking to social media using hashtags like #weareremovingadictator to show their support for Bobi Wine current Member of parliament and main Presidential opposition candidate. Many have said millennials and Gen Zs are apathetic when it comes to politics but maybe they are finding a new way to engage with the traditional form of politics and we’re seeing evolve as we speak.

In October, her WTO candidacy was supported by all geographic regions at the trade body apart from the United States, where the then-Trump administration said it would continue backing the Korean candidate. However, Okonjo-Iweala’s appointment was cleared when President Joe Biden announced a few days ago his support for the 66-year old.” cnbc.com We salute you Ngozi OkonjoIweala, thank you for being a light to women all over the world but especially to us African women, if her track record is anything to go by she’ll be turning WTO on it’s head and getting it in shape in no time at all and we can’t wait.
