Form and Function

Page 1

The Form and Function has established itself as a great sale backed by a super set of consignors year in and out serving Lloydminster and surrounding areas giving breeders an opportunity to showcase their genetics! You will notice a new sale date and time set for this year being Friday, December 3rd at 7pm at the Lloydminster Exhibition Grounds. An evening event allows for those at work to get down to the barn and have a preview of the cattle to source a 4H heifer, bred heifer or some frozen genetics that will enhance the quality to the herd and participate in some good Angus hospitality! The heifer calves again this year continue to be a strong set that offer some of the freshest genetics available in the Red / Black Angus industry around. Rest assured these calves were plucked from the top of their respective herds and have proven themselves to go on to make excellent cows down the road. In the bred heifer division we have a large selection of females that again were sourced from the top of their herdmates and carry some exciting services making for the resulting calves to be eagerly anticipated. Most rewarding is the fact that all of the consignors insist on bringing top quality genetics that will represent their herds knowing their profit potential for their new owners, if you aren’t happy they aren’t happy. Join us Thursday evening for a sneak preview or anytime during the day Friday to evaluate the genetics on offer and have a chance to visit with the breeders learning more of their program and goals and how it might fit your needs. Should you have any questions in regards to the sale cattle feel welcome to contact any of us at Castlerock Marketing, should you not be able to attend we are able to assist you with your purchases as well. See you sale day!

BLACK HEIFER CALVES When Shane was out selecting for this event, we never really realized that three Kingsman females were selected. You will have to ask him if that was planned or not, but take this opportunity for our loss to be your gain. The old saying goes ‘build females and the bulls will take care of themselves, when we purchased Kingsman, our focus was building more great females, as it has always been. The Bride cow family have left their mark on the Angus herd in Canada. Most significantly recognized in the Bar E-L program with their 4W donor who is a maternal sibling to 15E, the dam of this great heifer calf. Stacking legends on both sides never hurts. Grab hold and hang on for the ride, this one has the pieces to leave her own mark.

When we were able to acquire Bar E-L Iceberg Quest we immediately knew the impact he was going to have on our program. It’s beneficial anytime you can introduce that caliber of bull with that much cow power behind him. Atalanta 72J is the product of that cow power packed pedigree. She is an ultra feminine heifer stemming from an already productive 2 year old cow. This heifer’s mother has hit 2 home runs with her first 2 at bats. The first being a lead off stunner bull calf in last years private treaty bull sale and the second being this fancy heifer. We have no doubt she will be an asset to the new owners program.

20/20 Eileen 18J was a heifer calf that started at a very modest 76lbs. When making our decision to use HF Roper 27F in our replacement heifer Synchro program, lowered birth weight with good weaning weight and even better yearling weight EPD’s were exactly what we felt the doctor had ordered for our program. And 18J has completely lived up to these. She continues to only get better. Through the summer she was that “oh there’s a nice heifer” to closer to weaning she became the “hey who is that heifer” to now where she has become “let’s have another good look at that one” heifer. The more you look at her the more you find to like about her. Again, going back to our long term Eileen cow family with a shot of the great DMM Essence lineage on the bottom topped with the HF Rosebud 246Z cow, her future might just be bright enough to wear shades.

Lady Ann 6J is out of the legendary Soo Line Motive 9016, who is one of the most consistent Angus Bulls in the breed’s history. The phenotype he stamps his calves with is second to none; they have great extension with a smooth shoulder, structural soundness, unmatched style and udder quality and this young lady, 6J, is no exception. On the maternal side, fertility and longevity are bred in as her maternal grandmother, VAP 33U, is still working in the herd at the ripe old age of 13 years and still very youthful and sound. She has given us 12 calves so far with a number of daughters retained in the herd. 6J’s dam, VAP 7B, is a deep, powerful cow with tremendous spring of rib. With the combined genetic makeup this heifer possesses, she is destined to have a long and productive life ahead. Make sure to stop on Sale Day and see for yourself!

This consignment to the Form and Function was a difficult one to make. This is the type of female that needs to be retained but here she is on offer. This cow family is very productive. Erica 11J has two sisters retained in herd who have already raised high selling bulls and a brother working at Rolling Stock Farm. She also has a sister that was sold private treaty to Tyson Mitchell at Kitscoty, AB and was named Grand Champion Female with her bull calf at side at the Kitscoty 4H Achievement Day. This is a maternally stacked pedigree and the Bravo progeny are rising to the top in both sexes at Roy Mac. Erica 11J will be competitive in the show ring and provide immediate ROI once in production.

Here is a heifer I don’t really want to part with but our banker, Syd, says differently. Country Lane Rosebud 54J is a heifer that grabs your attention with her shape, dimension, balanced appearance, all while standing on an exceptional foot. Her dam traces back to the first animal, Brooking Rosebud 374, I purchased from Brooking Angus. The Rosebud cow family has become one of the prominent cow families at Country Lane. They are known for their elegant appearance, easy fleshing, and gorgeous udders. Combined with our senior herd sire, Merit Renegade 8130, who has exceeded our expectations with consistent volume and power, this heifer has great potential. Take advantage of this sweet gal as this is only the second “Rosebud” to sell! The first “Rosebud” brought $8600 selling to Jaycee Dutchik. Merit Renegade 8130F

McGowan Farms Our black herd isn’t very big, but the quality we believe is very strong. This would be our first ever black consignment female and we feel she has a bright future ahead of her. This Stunner heifer calf has a lot to offer from her front end extension to her overall muscling and shape. Her dam is a moderate female that we purchased as a calf at the first Angus collection sale and has never missed a beat. Either hang a halter on her or just let her be a momma cow, I believe she won’t disappoint you.

Attractive, long bodied, and wide describe the phenotype of Queen 69J. This pedigree has some older, tried and true, lines that will mean longevity and long term production. Tiger, Scotch Cap, Bando, and Rainmaker have all proven their worth many times over. We have had much success with this Standard Hill Bengal 479A to SCC Bando 45A mating. Grand dams of this heifer produced thirteen and twelve progeny at Standard Hill. With this heifer’s structural design and calving ease pedigree, she should be open to a wide variety of matchups with bulls in your battery.

When Shane came out to do selections, he generally knows how things work, we have heifers that we will offer for sale and those we deem UNTOUCHABLE. When he asked about this great heifer, He stated “I’m gonna ask but I’m sure I know the answer”. After much debate we gave in and the heifer that stands at the top of the list out of this flush; well here she is. Momma is top cow in our entire herd, LLB Lassie 275B is the cow we wish we had more of, she’s pretty special and you can see her out on the show road this year. We flushed her to Brooking Firebrand 6068 and WOW. CBK 8J: pretty, fancy, lots of style, plenty of middle and great hair. She is one of the top heifers we have sold to date, has great breeding behind her and is a heifer to take a close look at on sale day.

In every herd, you always have those 1 or 2 special calves that catches everyone’s eye and stand out at the top of your pen. This little sweetheart has been Conway’s favorite from the time cows went to pasture and is still his favorite after weaning time. She has show heifer written all over her. She has tons of eye appeal, is very fancy to look at and demands attention in any pen. Her dam was our first choice of cows that were purchased at the Gus Garnier Dispersal sale. This cow goes back to MJT Dark Duchess and Standard Hill Pulsar. We bought semen on Lazy MC 5T Bag of Chips 6092 at Farm Fair and used him on select cows. This little powerhouse is the product of that breeding. This heifer has solid footing, great hair and will make a Great Cow. Take a good look at her on Sale Day! 5T Bag Of Chips 6092

Flo Rider 22F has been used extensively for calving ease while adding growth and excellent udders coming from the Double F program. 308D is a larger framed female that we purchased from Standard Hill Livestock at Fall Fusion sale in 2016 and has produced top end progeny for us. 308D has excellent conformation and a great udder in an eye appealing package. 217J is going to be a great producer for her new owner.

Sired by EXAR Upshot 0526B, Cajun EU Lady Bate 24J is one of those calves whose birth you remember, not because she was born at minus 30 outside a few days early and you had to scramble to save the ears with mama breathing down your neck, but because of the carriage and style she demonstrated at a day of age. Throughout the summer she just stood out, Shane picked her out right off the bat because of the thickness and character she carried. Her Shipwheel Montana dam out of a Spruce View Overdrive sire has been a consistent producer of high performing calves who muscle up and catch the eyes of commercial bull buyers. Here is one package performance, pedigree and phenotype that is easy to market.

RED HEIFER CALVES

We all know the quality Soo Line Power Eye has left in the Red Angus breed, this heifer is no exception. We admire this heifer for how complete she is from the ground up. She exhibits style, great structure and a bold ribcage. Annie 5J comes from a modest, working cow that hasn’t missed an opportunity to raise a great one!

14

Gillett Angus

Red Gillett Cleopatra 16J is a fancy made daughter of a hard working, moderate framed cow. Her dam 26C features a well-balanced udder and high calving ease. 16J is sired by Red MRLA Perspective 84G, who was the second highest Retrospect son to sell in 2019 following the 130, 000 Respect bull. As our young herdsire, he has produced an excellent group of soggy made calves. You’ve got to really appreciate this bull for his heel and foot structure. This heifer calf is a really sweet made, balanced female who has all the pieces to develop into a productive female.

Sweetheart heifer going back to Red YOLO Yuma 1Y who is a Red Knight daughter and out of the great Debbie Cow family. Very well built, excellent structure and super soft to look at. She is backed by some great bloodlines. Her daddy is FT Choas 001F, a Navaho son who has done nothing but make great females since his first year of service. This heifer has a wonderful personality and could go out to be a 4H project, show heifer or just that cow that raises you great calves every year. Take a good look at her on sale day and I think you will be happy with her.

Here is a heifer that has already been in the show ring. She was shown at the Olds Fall Classic this fall, and showed well. Vinni is a larger framed heifer, who continues to impress me as we get closer to Sale day. She is long spined with outstanding rib shape. She exhibits natural muscle shape and stands on a good foot. Her dam 61Z, is an elite cow, since 2018, with a 107 WW Avg. Her Sire was in the show ring himself, Hustle 23F and was Intermediate Yearling Bull Champion in Olds in 2019. He stood on a large foot and was easy fleshing. This guy had muscle to spare, however we lost him too early. We are very proud of this heifer. You have the opportunity to build a great cow family with her. She comes Parent verified, and vet checked. Full herd health protocols followed.

When I spoke with Shane about selecting a heifer for this sale, I said it needed to be the top of our pen. And when he made his selections, I couldn’t have been more pleased. Saphira goes back to one of our foundation cows. This is a tried, tested and true, genetic line. You can keep up with the Jones’ to find the next cutting edge animal, or build on a cow family that is proven. Longevity is built in. Hang a show halter on this dark red, wide topped heifer, and she should not let you down. Her dam had a great 4H show career, and raised some fantastic herd bulls. Temperament, is an absolute must at Kopper LC, and this girl is the perfect example. She comes Parent verified and vet check approved. Full herd health protocols followed.

One out of two daughters from our 1W donor we have ever put forward for offer. Wildmere Rhonda 1W came to us from Becky’s Parents when we bought their herd and she has definitely rose to the top in our herd. She has been a great donor for us and is still in production and as sound as can be. Last year’s high selling bull, 10H, a maternal sibling to 103H, sold for $12,000 to Davidson Angus and will be a big part of our future breeding plans here as well. If 103H turns out anything like her sisters in our herd expect greatness out of this one, coupled with the maternal strengths of Merit Kingsman we feel that is as strong as you can make one on paper. Pedersen Angus A moderate, angular made female out of the $40,000 Merit Kingsman. Her dam came from our good friends at HR Hahn and has been an outstanding producer for us. Combining the growth and dimension of Sitz upward on the bottom side with the maternal greatness of Range Boss on the top side is a safe bet. Mated to our new exciting herd sire, Blast No Doubt 5H, should make for a highly marketable coupon.

A super sweet heifer by Stunner that you could find in the dark, she carries herself with that presence that draws your eyes to her right off the bat. Now, when you break down the pedigree this girl is loaded for bear, the popular Erelite cow family from U2 and the increasingly popular Kathleen cow family from Everblack. No holes heifer with a no holes pedigree and to top it off a service to the calving ease, maternal giant Coleman Bravo who is leaving a trail of progeny around the country that will highlight the fall and next spring.

Well, here we are at our inaugural Form & Function Sale. In the past, with already consigning females to the TOC sale, we weren’t comfortable selling more females of the quality required at sales such as this. Therefore, our own local sale was not in the books for the 20/20. However, we feel we are ready for 2021. We continue to strive to produce functional females with the ultimate goal of putting a sale bull in our pen at every chance. Having said that, 20/20 Eileen 27H fits this mold to a T. 27H carries the power and performance required to raise a top of the bull pen son, all the while still maintaining feminine presence and structure to put a heifer to the top of your replacement pen, with the added bonus of some older proven genetics in the TC foreman 016 sire not far back in her lineage we feel 27H is destined to be a long term high end producing female for her new owners.

Movin On Farms If you are looking to put some frame and power into your herd here’s one for you. This long bodied, wide topped, squared hipped female that has always caught my eye. So I’m really not surprised that she caught Shane’s too. Her sire is a power house bull with a great temperament. We picked up Luke for $24,000 from Justamere’s bull sale in 2019. Luke has definitely not let us down thus far. Her dam is a very sound cow with a lot of dimension and volume. She is bred to a Sting son that we purchased from Double F Cattle Co. last spring. Hooligan 101H is long bodied, strong topped, with an outstanding balance to him. Looking forward to see the calves hit the ground next year.

We have consigned some of our best bred heifers to this sale over its duration and this bred is no different. This female might not jump off the page when you first glance at the pedigree but one of the first thing I notice is that her pedigree contains three of the best walking bulls we have used in recent memory, to me this speaks volumes. Angus Valley 802B, Upside 49A, and F250 21X have a high number top end cows now walking our pastures and will leave a lasting impact. The guesswork is taken out of this bred heifer and maybe the most exciting part of the offering is the mating to HF Center Stage 126H. HF Center Stage was the exciting purchase out of Hamiltons this spring and we anxiously await his calves. We believe the showman line is going to have a major impact on the angus breed for years to come. AI service April 4/21 PM Executive Decision 5’17. Everblack Angus

91H is a typical Kathleen female, moderate framed with the look of a mother cow. She has a nice rib shape, very sound on the ground and her teat placement is hard to beat. Her mother, Kathleen 6E, would arguably be our easiest 2017 born female to look at. She has a near perfect udder, and a top like a table. Her first calf went back into the herd, 91H will be her second. 6E was part of a very successful flush, with four full sibs selling at auction averaging a hair over $11,000. They were selected by the notable operations of BAR-E-L, Ter-Ron, LCL, and the Schlekewy’s at St Walburg. Also, she has 2 full sisters in our herd. 91H is sired by the Real Estate son we walk from Longshore’s, and he is exceeding all expectations at a young age. With the Kathleens and Rose 1019, the maternal strength is strong, and she has the phenotype to back it up.

With 103H being just a mid-April baby, she has some performance in her. Then if you look at her EPD profile, her birth to yearling spread is very impressive. The maternal grandsire, Everblack Windy 18R, registered over 200 progeny at our place. He was known to produce “heifer calving bulls” and we all know how valuable a consistent low birth bull is around bull sale time. The sire, BAR-E-L Stamina 11F, is raising the bar at Everblack, and we eagerly await his first daughters to milk this spring. He’s siring calves with tremendous eye appeal, ease of fleshing, really good footed, and the daughters look to have great udder development. HR Hahn Angus 90H is a daughter of a very good cow that we purchased as a calf in the first Form and Function sale from the good folks at Country Lane leaving another good heifer calf in the pen again this year. The sire to Blackbird 90H was our pick of the bulls at Bar E-L to run with our heifers a few years back and has done a bang up job. The Liberty calves all have that extra style, powerful hip and a good big foot, male or female we haven’t been disappointed. This being his first set of daughters to calve is exciting. Bred to our Crescent Creek Scotchman 127H bull that carries a +9 CE EPD and a 75lb birthweight.

Pretty excited about this offering to the FORM and FUNCTION SALE, Huge appreciation goes out to Shane Castle for putting on this awesome event. This exceptional female is one that is hard to let go, but as the late Gord Rattray once told me, “you must sell some of your best, to get your product known.” Here is one of our best. Going back to a cow we bought at Gus Garnier Dispersal, A Networth Prodigy from Grandpa and a Mytty In Focus on the Grandma side, this bred has all the bloodlines. This will be one of the first ONeills Black Bardolier Bred Heifers sold. With lots of feminine jazz, tons of middle and lots of power, this is one bred you will want to look at adding to your herd. After a year of little rain and high feed prices you only want to feed cows that will make it, I’m confident this in one girl you will want to have.

A beautiful bred here and we are excited to see what she can do in her new owners herd. The dam of this female has produced some of our top end females and this is her second daughter to sell with the first selling to Phillip Brooks in 2020 and he has been more then pleased with how she has turned out. Long bodied with great balance to her she is built just like her dam. The service sire, JKC Covert 003G is an HF Espionage son that came in dam from Pedersen Livestock going to Clement Cote Farms. When John said he was drawing semen on the bull I knew we needed to get in on this exciting sire for his tremendous calving ease and awesome dam who is from the Lady cow family and has been very productive.

Cottonwood Angus A good portion of our cows are Tiptop females and have served our herd for 30 years. Note the sire of this bred is an International son out of the prolific Black Angel cow who has progeny scattered all over North America. You add Net Worth and New Generation and the maternal potential makes these females that are extremely productive with longevity and produce excellent bulls and females. Her service to Crawford Guarantee, Connealy Payraise son should be interesting and some of the first born in Canada. AI April 18 safe to Crawford Guarantee 9137. Due late January

Cottonwood Angus Another top daughter of our JD bull that still bred cows this summer and absolutely impressed Shane in his awesome feet and balance with that herdbull look. We have used him on as many cows as we possibly could since we selected him as a one of the High Selling bulls at Blairs. Ag from Jackson Cattle. His daughters are all a breeder could want, modest sized, hard working females that raise good calves and breed back early. This cow family has been a good addition since coming from the Soo Line herd! The service to LD Grazer 7090 should make the coupon worthwhile as his breeding success continues at Musgrave in Illinois

CHOICE LOT Stylish and blocky brood cow in the making off our own son of GVC Settler, Standard Hill Major 350C. Similarly made as her sire with moderate frame and superiority in depth of body and base width. Her Freedom dam hasn’t missed, producing two high selling bulls through our bull sale, and is currently weighing 1710. High quality maternal power in this mating. October 2021 CAA EPDs put 1H in the top 15% for birth weight and top 4% for milk. She possesses near perfect udder conformation and no white. Her August 30th weight was 1270. Service sire, Duralta 8020 Inferno 42H, was purchased this past spring. This son of Merit McLaren 8020F is attractive, long, and muscular in his design, and has a tremendous cow family behind him. His EPDs predict him to be exceptional for calving ease.

Powerful daughter of Standard Hill Major 350C, objectively one of the best bulls we’ve ever produced. You will admire 61H for her capacity and eye appeal. The Major females are great grass converters. Her dam has been a consistent producer of our heaviest calves with a high selling bull through our sale and the top bull prospect in this year’s production. She was 1680 in her prime. October 2021 CAA EPDs put 61H above average for growth and top 10% for milk. She possesses near perfect udder conformation and no white. Her August 30th weight was 1215. Pasture exposed to DFCC 244B Flo Rider 22F, our selection at the 2019 Double F bull sale. He is free moving, long bodied, muscular, and is rated well for calving ease after 70 plus offspring produced. His first daughters will be calving in 2022 and we expect quality udders with plentiful milk. 4H has always stood out from the rest with her bold ribbed, soft made with a feminine front end to her incredible foot. This Missy J bloodline has been a solid one in our herd. This gal’s grand dam and dam are both Elite females who have thrown some great producers in our herd. Her dam is a moderate framed female with a tremendous udder on her. We purchased her sire from the Maple Ridge Dispersal Sale. He left us some great sons and daughters and this will be their first calving crop coming from them. Can’t wait to see what they can do. She is bred to a home raised bull that falls back to that great Howe Magnum 169W bloodline. Exposed: May 3 to June 1 to MOf Grand Slam 90G Due: March 6

B -Elle Red Angus This is a rock solid prospect that will step into your herd and produce high end offspring for many years. She comes from an awesome cow that has all the bases covered; great feet, tons of capacity, super udder with lots of milk flow, and a stellar production record. Add to that the extra bone, substance and punch from her sire PTO and Hint 73H has tremendous potential. 73H is AI’d to RREDS Seneca for an early February calf. Her pasture bull is a son of our Bar-E-L Cadet 1C bull, also out of one of the top 5 cows in our herd. Hope 93H carries the combination of top maternal genetics from our herd and from Wilbar Cattle Co. This heifer’s mother, Arrow 373A is an easy fleshing, deep bodied cow, who’s daughters are always picks of the pen when Shane comes. Her sire is an ET son of Specialist and Wilbar Brndina 638S one of their prolific donor cows. On paper this heifer has tremendous potential; in person she has the stuff to prove it. Hope 93H is wide hipped, deep in her middle, angular and smooth through her shoulder. She walks on sound black feet and will have an excellent udder with lots of milk flow. This heifer carries service to a PTO son. Harley is a moderate, thick topped, laidback calving ease bull out of an excellent cow that always has a good calf.

This girl at th ripe old age of 14 still brings home one of the top calves every year, has never taken a year off and stands in our herd AI caught again this year. Sooo, you know this bred heifer has a great cow backing her. Her sire is Family Ties Choas 001F who is a Navaho son and produces our top heifers every year and we sold a great set of bulls out him in our sale last year. CBK 11H is special to us, but when you have as many females kept out her momma, you can let some go at sale. Strong footed, lots of middle offset by a excellent frame.
