What a fantastic year in the cattle industry with prices setting new records every day, feed is abundant and reasonably priced and that doesn’t happen often. The Mathon family is once again has put together a strong set of bulls that offer a little something for everyone, from flat out performance bulls to sleep all night heifer bulls. Most importantly this crop of bulls have jumped through the hoops and if you know these folks you know how fussy they are. This operation is truly a family run outfit as the kids help out throughout the year and when it comes to the show strings that are exhibited, Mom and Dad stand clear as Erika, Lexie and Logan know what it takes.

We have known Derek and Stacey Mathon of DERSTA FARM Ltd. for more than a decade. They are a top-quality seed-stock producer that have been developing and refining their breeding program from the day they bought their first purebred cow. Welcome to the 2nd annual DERSTA Farm Bull Sale. First and foremost, we want to acknowledge our heartfelt gratitude to ALL of our supporters, bidders and buyers, who have put their trust in our program the past 13 years. Without EACH and every one of you we wouldn’t be here today hosting you at our sale.
As always, the kids keep us busy with ALL the sports year round, we took some of the junior shows off this summer, but 4H was full bore. A highlight of the kids this year was for the second year in a row the girls were fortunate to come out of 4H shows with Both Club Champion and Reserve Champion Steers. With Erika taking it all with Interclub Grand Champion Steer. Erika was given the immense privilege of taking her 4H steer to Calgary Stampede Steer Show and came out 3rd in class. Which we are so happy to see a 100% Red Angus home raised steer be so well received. Their Females were also well received with Erika Interclub Reserve Champion.
Erika and Lexie really stepped out this year by purchasing 5 new females for their herds and Lexie stepping into the Embryo game. Watch for her ‘Chloe’ bulls next year. They are THICK!!
2024 brought another record setting calf and cull market. It’s never been better or looked brighter to be in cattle. Rains came to parts that hadn’t seen a drop in more years than they will admit, while other areas saw the drought continue. Once again ‘It’ll be better next year’ mentality never changes. I for one am so excited for the promise and hope each year brings.
We could go on and on about the bulls but who better to evaluate and critique than the producers like you. We did our heaviest cull this fall with anything that didn’t raise a keeper went to town with a few more added to the list after they calved. We continue to strive to raise the bulls that we would use ourselves, the dams to the bulls in the pasture are ones that have continually given us those ‘keeper’ calves whether bull or female. We get asked year after year ‘ how many bulls is your goal? Or how big are you planning on getting’ Our response is. With the current bull sales out there why offer sub par. whether its 25 or 50 bulls they have to be the part. Each year is different. But you can bet the ones we keep and offer on the second Thursday of March are here for a reason.
We would like to make sure we shout out to our herd health partners. Without them we would not be able to keep the cows in a strict 60-day calving period, nor the health in which the herd is always in. University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions:
• The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%.
• The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf.
• The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny.
• Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calve have 35-40% influence on calving ease.
• Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation.
• Weather and temperature in the last 30 days affect the length of gestation.
• Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease.
Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer - what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lbs, may actually be 80-90 lbs.
Everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lbs at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lbs. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200-1250 lb cow should give birth to a 96 lb calf with ease. Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of cattle.
HERD HEALTH
The Alberta Veterinary Center has been providing regular herd health services or Dersta Farm Ltd. since the very beginning of 15 years. Our goal and Dersta has always been to prevent disease rather than treat. The cow herd has been vaccinated annually in the spring 6 weeks prior to breeding. The entire herd is on the Bovishield Gold Program and receives the Clostridial vaccine annually. The whole herd not just the first calving heifers are vaccinated annually with Scour Guard for neonatal scour prevention. At birth all caves receive a dose of nasalgenBovalis for the prevention of viral pneumonia. At grass turn out and again at weaning regardless of commercial or purebred the calves are all vaccinated with Bovishield Gold + OneShot, Vision 8/som. As a recently added vaccine, Dersta has utilized the pink eye vaccine with great success. Annual parasitic control is strictly followed with a Cylence treatment mid-summer if needed depending on fly load. All of the herd bulls and yearling bulls on offer are fully vaccinated with both doses of Fusogaurd in the prevention of foot rot prior to delivery and vaccinated with the Bovishield Gold program.

• All bulls are guaranteed to be structurally sound and to have passed a semen test prior to sale day by Alberta Veterinary Services.
• All bulls will be fully vaccinated with the Foot Rot and IBR/BVD Vaccine.
• We guarantee our bulls to be satisfactory breeders. Please contact us if you are having an issue early on to we can come up with an option to fix it.
• We retain no interest in the bulls and you own them 100%. You will not be bidding against any Sale credits in our sale.

• Don’t let your eyes deceive you. Starting off at 69 lb on a firsttime mamma and at 11 months Dec 28th 1191 lb.
• The biggest middle bull in the offering and for a little black project we are trying I think has hit it out of the park.
• His middle makes him look short but compared to the pen he’s only about 2” shorter than the biggest bull.

• 201’s dam has a sweet heifer calf at side this year at 70lb and will most definitiely be in the replacement pen or sale in the fall if she can arm wrestle the sale management.

Something new we are adding to the sale moving forward is select group of open heifers. These heifers are all sired by the same bulls in the sale. They have all been palpated by our veterinarian. The dams are all part of our program and have had either heifer retained or bulls in the sale.
All heifers are all sired by the same Deputy bull. Calving ease and good footed and good udders have been the name of the game on the 6 calf crops we’ve had from Deputy.

Each of the kids have been accumulating a fair number of cows and so they reluctantly each added 1 heifer to make this group. There is 2 Rendition heifers and 1 Adrenaline heifer in this group. The dams all are good uddered, good temperament and have all had bulls in previous sales or heifers retained as well.

DISPUTES In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final. ANNOUNCEMENTS Any changes from information in this catalogue will be announced from the auction block; such changes will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue.
