Welcome to our11thAnnualSale
Welcome to the 11th Annual Hardgrass Bull Sale. As always, we thank our loyal and future customers for your support, the people throwing ropes and fixing fences are the life blood of our industry. The past few years have been challenging in the west with the lack of moisture and feed, while this year wasn’t without some stresses it came as a welcome respite to have early spring moisture to grow some much-needed grass and forage.
Again, this year the North American cow herd has decreased and demand for beef remains strong, this is creating a record high market for all classes of livestock. It also makes for a competitive market in the seedstock industry, with that in mind we have brought you the top cut of long yearling bulls that we are proud to stand behind. They have summered out on grass and are in great condition, ready to get to work come spring.

On behalf of Steven, Dean and myself we would like to thank our customers for their support and interest in our program. As always, we strive to produce cattle that will work for us and our customers in our environment. We have maintained a 42-day breeding season for the last 8 years; the cows are bred AI on a 10-day sync program and then see one cycle service with the herd bull and the opens go to town. We are always looking to improve our herds’ performance while at the same time making sure that they are still functional, sound cattle. Please feel free to contact us if you want to view the cattle prior to the sale or have any questions.

A Rainmaker 4404 son that was born an easy 77 lbs. and then weaned the 2nd heaviest at 718 lbs., he has a bit more frame and length with excellent scrotal shape. I have been very impressed with the 4404 two-year-old heifers this year, they have nice tidy udders and are raising a nice calf while maintaining body condition. His dam has a birth weight average of 75 lbs. Use on heifers or cows.

The cattle business is an interesting animal. If you stick around long enough you will see a lot. But the one constant is the people involved, a strong resilient group. Each running their operations to suit individual needs. As I have stated before I work towards raising purebred cattle that work in our environment. The main resource we have is our native rangeland and our cows have to perform under these conditions. I look forward to seeing those that can make it to the sale and hope to have a visit with you. - Stratton Peake

11H is a home raised bull. He stood out at every phase of his development out performing his herd mates at weaning and yearling. His mother is now 11 years old and in excellent shape with a faultless udder. Another great thing about him is his calm and cool disposition. He carries the eye catching style of his sire Merlin 018Y. A home raised sire that performed and thrived in our environment. He has been used heavily AI by Saddle Ridge Farming in their heifer breeding program.

Cavalry has been a very influential sire in my program. His sons have shown to be easy calving with moderate birthweights followed by impressive growth. His daughters have been great mothers with excellent udders. Cavalry was incredibly quiet and easy to handle which he passed onto his offspring, you could load that bull into the trailer anywhere in the middle of the pasture no questions asked.

Hello again from R&W Cattle Co.
As always we focus on the fundamentals of the mother cow… fertility, soundness, and fleshing ability. This years offering is not a high performance pen of bulls. Masculine but middle of the road for power and developed conservatively, these are strong sound bulls that should provide added longevity and leave behind good functional cattle. They were summered on hard native prairie grass and crested wheat, covering rough terrain and walking to water, any and all soundness issues have been weeded out. Buy with confidence knowing these bulls know how to cover ground.
As you will see this years bull pen has no AI sires. We have taken a step back from AI’ing the last couple years. It has been hard to get around North America to see dams, sires and progeny lately and we are finding we get more consistency and predictability in the sires we know the parents of.

HF Solitary 85H checked all the boxes when we went looking for a bull a couple years ago. A no holes son of the great Alcatraz with depth and thickness, soundly made, good footed and has great locomotion. He was Gail’s pick for quality and out of a really good cow. We agreed, and he has done nothing but good at our place. He walked heifers then cows his first year and held his flesh well. We collected him and used him in our commercial heifer sync the next year. His first daughters calved this spring and did their job excellently being good mothers with great udders. Not hard to handle or keep in and has great libido.

R&W Tiger 13C 1093 was a great yearling bull we kept back from the 2022 sale to use on cows. We have been very impressed with the quality of cows R&W Tiger 13C, a direct son of Tiger, left behind we had to keep one of his last sons, not to mention crossed on the ultra powerful Density daughter 41A. A full brother sold to Chris Jensen in the 2021 sale that we probably should have kept. Unfortunately, these are his only sons that will be offered as we lost him right after breeding season when he cast himself against the fence.

BULL SOUNDNESS EVALUATION
The WHO?
The Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluation
More than just a date with a probe . . .
Breeding soundness examinations should be performed on all bulls to be used for breeding.
The WHY?
Economics… When comparing heritable traits, fertility is 10 times as important as carcass quality and 5 times as important as rate of gain. Although female fertility is important, the herd sire bears the majority of the herd’s fertility responsibility – the law of ratios! It is estimated that 1 out of every 5 bulls is sub-fertile, so avoid the surprise in the fall of open or late cows and get those bulls tested.
The HOW?
Libido and serving capacity are UNASSESSED in the routine breeding soundness exam!!! It is important for producers to monitor breeding activity when the bull is put with cycling females
Palpation of both testicles is essential; the testicles should be firm, move freely within the scrotum and there should be no irregular swellings. The scrotum is also examined for any injuries (for example, frost bite) and excess fat deposits that can affect thermoregulation. The ideal scrotal shape is pendulous with a definite neck (smaller testicles and excess fat usually alter scrotal shape). There is a reason why scrotal circumference measurements are performed!! Scrotal circumference measurements are highly correlated to testis weight, daily sperm production and high semen quality traits. Larger scrotal circumferences in bulls are associated with earlier age at puberty in heifers. See, size does matter!!! Transrectal internal examination focuses on accessory sex glands and inguinal rings. Enlarged sex glands can be a sign of inflammation with secondary infection.
Semen quality is a big focus of the exam. Ejaculate volume, semen density and motility (gross and individual) and sperm morphology are all evaluated. Density and motility are assessed using a microscope. There is power in sperm numbers and if the sperm are not moving well, they will not make it to fertilize the egg! Individual sperm are examined under a higher magnification on a stained slide for abnormalities.
Sperm Abnormalities... The easiest way to understand this is to the think of an individual sperm in sections. Abnormalities can affect each section of the sperm – the head, the midpiece, the tail (principle piece) and the acrosome (top part of the head). There can also be ‘broken sperm’ with the head separated or detached and droplets that are usually lost from the sperm can still be present. Sperm abnormalities are usually classified as either Primary or Secondary and are based on where the defect originates during spermatogenesis. It is important to remember that Spermatogenesis is an ONGOING thing! Sperm are constantly being produced in a continuous cycle. The causes of disturbing spermatogenesis are usually heat or stress related (less common causes are genetic, toxic and nutritional deficiencies). Both heat and stress lower levels of testosterone which affects sperm production.
The WHEN?
Weather can have an effect on a breeding soundness exam. Warmer days are always better because there is less chance for false negatives from environmental effects. Sperm can get ‘shocked’ on a cold day and motility can be greatly decreased. Since annual vaccines are commonly administered to bulls at the time of semen testing, it is good to test about 3 to 4 weeks before breeding season.
The WHAT?
Bulls that are classified as SATISFACTORY potential breeders mean they have met all of the minimum requirements for physical soundness and semen quality – remember, watch for sex drive and mating ability!! QUESTIONABLE bulls would most likely impregnate cows but fertility is expected to be slightly below normal or there is a risk of transmitting undesirable traits to offspring. The DECISION DEFERRED classification is usually given to pubertal bulls with poor semen quality because at sexual maturity semen quality should improve. It is also used in mature bulls that have suffered a disturbance in spermatogenesis, such as frost bite damage, which should recover before the breeding season. UNSATISFACTORY is given to bulls that are expected to result in poor fertility in the cow herd.
It is always important to remember that when doing a breeding soundness exam, we use a ‘snapshot in time’ to evaluate a continuous ‘motion movie picture’. Spermatogenesis is constantly happening and bulls are subjected to numerous things on a daily basis that can affect this. Just because your toe doesn’t hurt today, doesn’t mean you won’t stub it on the tractor tomorrow . .

Ballads of the Badlands HOME
by Arthur Peake - 1866 - 1947 - Pioneer in the Dorothy Area
It’s years ago since first I crossed the Red Deer And roughlocked down those broken banks of clay, And built my home of cottonwood and willow And hauled supplies from Gleichen far away. The antelope then bunched upon the prairie And prairie chicks in thousands we did see, And with haystacks in our yards when it came winter The old Red Deer just looked like home to me.
Our cattle ranged from Willow Creek to Bullpound; The open range was good and free to all. We branded calves, cut hay and then the beef herd Was gathered up for shipping in the fall.
A rider then he headed for our rancho Says, “A welcome there and feed for horses and me.”
We talked on brands, bits and spurs and saddles, And the old Red Deer just felt like home to me.
Now it’s lonesome today beside the old Red Deer; The riders they no longer come this way. The range is fenced and cut up into homesteads, For years we have not even talked of hay. Beside the Red Deer’s banks I have to linger, Tho’ the future here does not shine in bright for me. Could we hit the trail again for open country? For freedom and feed, how happy we would be.
