BUYING A 4-H STEER
“Learn to do by doing.” The 4-H Program teaches kids so many invaluable life lessons. First and foremost, to get out and do it! These 4-H Members have had no choice but to go out and feed these steers morning and night, no matter the weather. The program has provided them with lessons of work ethic and commitment, as well as the value in public speaking, community involvement and leadership.
It has become more important than ever that these kids get out and find buyers, sell their steers, and learn about the importance of the business of farming that goes beyond the barnyard.
We invite you to be a part of the 4-H program by considering the purchase of a 4-H steer as your next advertising, promotion, or donation expenditure for your business.
Here is how it works:
Live weight 1300 lbs x approx. $2.50 per pound results in a market value of $3250. Should you choose to add additional advertising expenditures on top of the market value of the steer and not keep the animal for meat, then that can be expensed through your business. One or multiple businesses may choose to join together to get a higher total dollar value for a 4-H member, providing more exposure through the sale ring. For example, Business A and Business B have each chosen to spend $500 on advertising. They purchase the steer for $4250 or $3.25 per lb. They then opt to resell the steer at market value and cut their losses as an advertising expense. The Market price is variable and may change slightly from week to week. These Animals can sell at Heartland Livestock the following week.
Steers may be purchased for whatever monetary value is deemed acceptable on the buyer’s part. If the buyer chooses to keep the meat, we will help to make sure that you have the animal delivered and ready for slaughter at a reputable local abattoir. The buyer will be responsible for the expense of cutting and wrapping and the pick-up of your choice of cuts, as communicated to the facility. Typically, this adds a cost of approximately $1000 to the value of the live steer.
To make arrangements to invest in our youth and the Mankota 4-H Beef Club program, or simply fill your freezer with some of the best beef around, please contact each member individually, or any of our leaders.
MANKOTA 4-H BEEF CLUB
The Mankota 4-H Beef Club was established in 1968 with just a few cattle savy kids in white collared shirt, black ties, and Hereford/Angus influenced cattle. Today it has grown into a club of 30 members and 40 head of cattle, representing numerous breeds from communities including Mankota, McCord, Val Marie, Glentworth, Assiniboia, Wood Mountain, Kincaid, Hazenmore, Aneroid, and Ponteix. A big thank you to this years June 2nd Achievement Day judge, Jamie Rae Pittman for taking the time out of her busy life to evaluate these cattle
The animals showcased in this catalogue are a representation of the time and hard work put into such a long standing program. Steers will sell:

Hi, my name is Aspen Blake and I am a senior member of the Mankota 4-H Beef Club. I have been a proud 4-H’er for 10 years now. The number of lifelong friendships I have made through 4-H is something I wouldn’t trade for the world. I love having a second family in 4-H and being able to pass my love for showing cattle onto all of the younger members.
My steer, Hank was grown on barley, silage, and hay and he’s one of the thickest, deepest steers I’ve raised. He’s sired by a Black Angus bull and a Gelbvieh/Angus cow and carries all of their best traits. If you have any questions regarding my steer or the sale, please feel free to contact me and I’d be happy to help. I look forward to chatting with you!

This year for my 4-H project, I decided to take a heifer off of our herd sire Blake’s Red Angus “Buddy” and dam “Miissy” to show off the production and genetics of our small, home raised cattle herd.
My heifer is a commercial Red Angus x Simmental, she was born on April 8th, 2023, and finished off weighing 1010 lbs on June 2nd.
Layla is a beautifully structured and uniform heifer. She carries soundness, femininity from her back end to her face, giving much eye appeal. We can not wait to see what she has to offer for the new generation of her genetic line production.
