MILTON - The Bilingual Version by Lisa Damour
What's Up In Milton WI
The presentation of MILTON in Milton-Freewater, OR is happening in June 2016. Our next trip to MiltonFreewater is in October -- we'll be teaching at the middle and high schools, working in vineyards, going to community meetings to collaborate on downtown pop-up art galleries and more. My job will be to keep my eyes and ears open for clues as to what our Milton performance wants to be next year. Our plan as we travel is to adapt the performance script for each Milton in which we perform. At first, I thought this would simply mean swapping out a handful of lines about Milton, NC for lines about Milton-Freewater, OR. As we continue our trips, however, I'm beginning to realize that I need to move away from this cut-andpaste approach and ask the question: what stories need to be heard in Milton-Freewater right now? And how can they be heard by the broadest cross-section of residents? In the interest of bringing people together, I am curious to see if I can work with a translator to transform the script into something that can only work with a combination of English, Spanish and Spanglish -- with some things being translated and others not. Is there a way to transform the script into something that can only be heard with both Spanish and English speakers in the room? A script that needs to be deciphered together? The only thing I know for sure is that I can't figure out these next steps by myself sitting at my desk at home -- it's something I will stumble upon as I work, learn, listen and play in Milton-Freewater on our trips over the next year.

NEA Our Town & Community Park! News from Milton-Freewater Site Visits by Ashley Sparks
Milton-Freewater is buzzing with energy right now. Over the past 3 months Lisa and I have made several visits to spend time with our friends at the Milton-
festivities included a parade, talent show, salmon bake and corn roast, pretty baby contest, bbq contest, and fine art show.
Freewater Downtown Alliance and in the City’s Community Development Department. We were thrilled when the city received it’s first grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for their OUR TOWN proposal. PearlDamour along with Shakespeare Walla Walla is partnering with the city on a 2-year community development initiative. TALK PLAY DREAM: HABLAR JUGAR SOÑAR, is a series of events designed to bring the Latino and Anglo populations of Milton-Freewater together to make art, dream and take action towards what they want their city to be. We’ll be working with the City, MFDA, schools, library, and Chamber of Commerce to curate and facilitate a series of bilingual pop-up arts events around town. As Lisa mentioned, our play MILTON will be bilingual in Oregon and is a key part of the arts series sponsored by the City. I spent the last weekend of July in Milton-Freewater volunteering with the Milton-Freewater Downtown Allliance. Over the past few months they have been working with the Pomegranate Center and visual artist Milenko Matanovic to design a community park where the old Dairy Queen used to be by MacLoughlin High School. In 4 days over 260 people came out and put in 1000s of volunteer hours to create a space designed and built for and with the community. It was inspiring to see so many people come together! I hosted a toast with a few of our partners for the Our Town project and key volunteers that were part of building the park on my last night in town. We’ll be making more visits to town leading up to our performance there next summer. Congratulations on all the amazing work!
Milton, NC - 2nd Annual Street Fair! In June Milton, NC held their 2nd Annual Street Fair! Over the weekend a few hundred people came through town to check out the Milton Studio Art Gallery, play cornhole, and see the debut of Fred Motley's play about the life of famed furniture maker Thomas Day. The play was held at the Woman's Club where we performed MILTON last summer. Our friends at the Milton Studio Art Gallery were also recently awarded a grant from the Danville Regional Foundation for a town mural. The mural is approximately twenty feet high and fifty five feet long, on the wall at the beginning of Commercial Row on Broad Street in the heart of Milton. We are proud to see how active our smallest Milton is a year after our show!
