Project News Milton in Motion

There is no hibernating for us this winter. Lisa is jumping around from New Orleans to Durham and New York, while Katie completes her MFA in Brown University's Writing for Performance program in Providence. Ashley is exploring the west coast on a statewide tour of California working with Cornerstone Theater Company. Currently, we are working hard on getting Milton to Oregon-- busily writing both national and regional grants with our partners in MiltonFreewater. Katie was recently in Seattle planning for a Milton-inspired residency that PearlDamour will be doing with the University of Washington Drama School throughout 2015/16. This residency will help us get to Milton-Freewater for several site visits next year. In Milton, NC, the ripples of the project are still being felt. We were overwhelmed by the excitement our show last August has generated, and are thrilled with the action the town is taking to build on the momentum begun by the project. The Danville Regional Foundation, one of our project's supporters, is featuring Milton, NC as one of five "Bright Spots" that they fund. We are so proud and excited to continue our relationship with Milton, NC as they take on these new events and projects.

In it for the Long Haul... Planning, fundraising, visiting by Ashley Sparks and Katie Pearl

When we first launched MILTON and started visiting your 5 towns over two years ago, we hadn't fully realized the long-term nature of this project! We've learned from our experience bringing the show to Milton, NC that it takes a lot of time on both our part and your part to build the relationhships that make the project meaningful. It also takes a lot of time to raise the funds necessary to do that relationship-building: visits to your Milton, money to fund the events and get togethers that will lead up to the show, and then rehearsing and producing the show itself. We are

committed to taking the time we want and need with each Milton's community before we bring the show to you. Our plan right now is to do our next performance in Milton-Freewater, OR in the Spring 2016. As you saw above, we're deep in collaboration with community groups there as we seek regional and national grants to support the project. But as we focus on MiltonFreewater, we'll also continue dropping into each Milton as much as we can, hosting workshops, spending time at local meetings, doing some informal professional development trainings, and getting folks together to eat a meal and share their vision for the future of their Milton. Here’s our upcoming schedule: February 2015 - Lisa visits Milton, NC March 2015 - Katie visits Milton, MA April 2015 - Ashley visits Seattle and Milton-Freewater May 2015 - Lisa visits MiltonFreewater. Alert! This newsletter will come less frequently in the coming months as we continue fundraising, community development and designing engagement activities.
