ADULT DISCIPLESHIP AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Reaching Higher “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18)
Growing Deeper
“The Church is alive because Jesus Christ lives.”
Alive
T
he Church is alive. We are alive because Jesus Christ lives, and the community of faith thrives as we receive, grow in, and proclaim life in Him. The Easter season reminds us of this powerful reality and helps us to focus on the grace of God and how it changes our lives. This is what drove Paul the Apostle to affirm in his new life as a disciple of Jesus, “By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect” (1 Corinthians 15:10). He said this with a sense of astonishment because he realized that as far from God as he seemed, he was not out of the reach of God’s mercy and grace. And, because so much had been given to him in this grace, it motivated him to live it out with all of his heart, soul, and strength. 2
Paul never got over what Christ did for him. That’s the way to live the life that Jesus’ resurrection makes possible. How is God at work in your life such that God’s grace is “having effect”? How are you choosing to let the grace of God that is within you transform you as a disciple? This is a rich season of worship, growth, and mission in the life of this family of faith called First United Methodist Church. The publication you are reading is appropriately called Growing Together, because we are committed to growing “in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18) together and to enjoying the community with God and with one another that such growth brings. Take time to peruse the opportunities that are current in the adult discipleship life of FUMC.
A gifted, committed, prayerful team of leaders called the Adult Discipleship Leadership Team (ADLT) dedicates its ministry to growing alongside you and helping you to find places of spiritual growth that are right for you. We hope that these pages are helpful and that this season is fruitful in your life of discipleship. Please call on us if you have questions or just want to talk about spiritual life and growth at FUMC and how that fits into where you are in your life. John Harman Adult Discipleship Pastor

Adult Discipleship Goes Easter Join us on Resurrection Sunday for a Special Event
O
n Easter Sunday, April 8, join the Adult Discipleship Leadership Team (ADLT) at 9:00 or 10:05 am for a special Sunday school gathering. In the Heard-Craig Auditorium, directly across Church Street from First United Methodist Church, the adult Sunday school classes at each hour will gather to celebrate Easter in a special way: all together! This is an excellent opportunity to fellowship with other classes, to enjoy the hospitality of the ADLT, to extend the hospitality ministry of your class to our newcomers, and to enjoy a brief Easter Sunday lesson. This special time will give those who are looking for a meaningful Sunday morning discipleship connection a place to get to know what adult Sunday school at First UMC is all about. Together we can join in reaching out while enjoying the spirit of growing together that is alive and well in our church family. Discipleship ministries are part of the core of who we are at First UMC, and adult Sunday school is the largest adult discipleship ministry. This event will bring us together and will offer us an opportunity to celebrate how God has helped us to grow spiritually and to grow as a community this year. Pastor John Harman will lead a brief devotional lesson that will focus on “Discipleship from an Empty Tomb,” and the Leadership Team will host you for some excellent food and fellowship on this greatest day in the life of Christ’s Church. Plan to join this joyous gathering and encourage others to connect on Easter as well! No registration is necessary.

n Friday mornings at 7:00, men gather at the church for coffee and Bible study together to start the day. The discussion study is led by volunteer members of the group and encourages interaction and fellowship as well as praying for needs that are shared. Typically, this large group studies through books of the Bible by reading and discussing a new short section each week. This time of connection and study is open to all men and welcomes visitors and those who may only be able to attend occasionally. Stop by Room B110 (the Parlor) any Friday and discover why this morning study is so popular at FUMC!
iscipleship is ultimately a work of God, and we recognize the indispensable role of prayer as a Christian community. One of the many blessings of having a regular discipleship connection is the opportunity to pray for and with others in the faith community, and to be prayed for by the same. Strength and support flow from these Christian relationships and form an integral part of our learning and growing experience. Are you connected? Find that place, and let us help however we can. Contact the ADLT at discipleship@sharingtheheart.org.
Disciple Bible Study Registra on Opens this Summer
I
ne of our core, in-depth Bible study ministries for adults at First UMC is Disciple Bible Study. This is a series of studies that begin in late August and finish around the end of April each year.
Beginning April 29 and continuing through May 20, Dr. Ron Bentley will be a guest leader in Faith Connections to bring us into the Gospel of John. We will examine some of the major contributions that John’s Gospel makes to our understanding of who Jesus Christ is and to how that understanding shapes our faith.
The foundation study that is the prerequisite for the others is called Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study. This 34-week group experience surveys the Old Testament in the fall and the New Testament in the spring. It is a great way to join with others in gaining exposure to the “big picture” of the biblical story and to the response of faith to which it calls disciples of Jesus Christ.
This class meets on Sunday mornings at 9:00 in Room C210 and is usually led by Pastor John Harman. This community of study is a place to grow and to connect on Sundays, and is open to all who are looking for a Sunday morning Bible study as a step in their life of discipleship.
This study is highly recommended for all, especially those with little or no previous experience in Bible study. Watch for more information and for registration to open in the summer.
Faith Connections n April, the Faith Connections Class will complete the Lenten series, “Living the Resurrection,” a study of 1 Corinthians 15 and the place of Christ’s resurrection as well as our own, future resurrection in the Christian faith and daily life.

Sunday Morning Discipleship at FUMC Growing Together in Community Make Bible Study a Part of Your Sunday Morning
D
id you know that hundreds of adults participate in classes at First United Methodist Church every Sunday morning? Adult Sunday school is the church’s largest discipleship ministry and has much to offer for study, growth and fellowship. The 23 regular adult classes on Sunday mornings include large lecture-style classes, mid-sized guided discussion Bible studies, and smaller groups that focus on biblical topics in more personal and informal settings. From inductive Bible studies to topical book discussions to marriage and family-focused fellowships, FUMC has a variety of opportunities on Sundays that are sure to include a match for your interests and style. And, there is always room for you! Sunday school classes welcome visitors and those who just want to “shop around.” The Adult Discipleship
Leadership Team (ADLT) and the leaders of the Sunday classes encourage you to try the wonderful combination of worship and group discipleship growth as a regular part of your Sunday morning experience. Many of the various classes maintain a web page on the church’s site at sharingtheheart.org/adults. There you can see a basic description of the group, the meeting time and place, and a person to contact if you would like more information. Often you can also find a description of the current study and other activities in which the class is involved. At FUMC, we believe that a life of faith is a life of growth, and we invite you to grow with us on Sunday mornings. We welcome your presence and participation as we open our lives together to the transforming experience of Bible study in community.
In Mission: Sunday School Classes and UM Missionaries Classes in Partnership with United Methodist Missionaries in Panama
E
arlier this year, a number of Sunday morning classes chose to become “Covenant Partners” with United Methodist missionaries David and Cindy Ceballos. This amazing, gifted couple is currently serving in Panama, working with local Methodists to establish a new congregation and to introduce community health, education, and leadership development ministries in connection with it. Classes that choose to step into mission by stepping into relationship with our missionaries covenant to support them in prayer, to stay current with their work, to communicate with them regularly, and to meet specific
needs as they come up and as classes are able. The opportunity to put financial resources behind our passion for and interest in the work in Panama is also available to classes if they choose. Some classes receive a special offering, and some allocate regularly collected funds. The core of the covenant partnership is relationship with our missionaries themselves, however. This special relationship helps us to recognize and to join in the spiritual work being carried out by people whom God has called to spend their lives in distant places. Ask around as you attend Sunday morning classes and find out more about how you can become part of David and Cindy’s ministry! 7

true discipleship highlight this year has been the journey to the Holy Land that FUMC made in January. A group of 20 from FUMC went on a very special ten-day pilgrimage called “Christian Friends Following in the Footsteps of Jesus.” This amazing trip was organized and led by Adult Discipleship Leadership Team (ADLT) member Tina Ripperger and accompanied by Pastor John Harman. Some of the sites the group visited were Caesarea Maritima, Mt. Carmel, Nazareth, Cana, the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, the Mount of Beatitudes, Caesarea Philippi, Bethlehem, Bethany, Jericho, Qumran, Masada, the Dead Sea, and of course, Jerusalem (among others). Another journey is in the planning, scheduled for January 25 to February 2, 2013. Many of the same locations will be on the itinerary, and registration for the trip will soon be open. Information sessions will be scheduled beginning in May so that you can meet with the trip organizers, hear a brief presentation, and ask all the questions that you have. A series of classes to prepare for the trip will be led by Pastor John Harman and will include topics in Bible study, history, geography, and archaeology relevant to the places the group will visit. Stay tuned as details become available and are published, and take a look at the website from this past January’s tour: www.fumcintheholyland.org. The site will be updated soon to include details of the 2013 trip. If you have questions in the meantime, please email Tina at bettina_ripperger@yahoo.com or John at jharman@sharingtheheart.org.

Personal Bible Reading Reading the Bible for Growth and Strength in 2012
T
he Gospels are where we encounter the story of Jesus’ birth, life and ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection, and it is here where we focus our reading during Lent and Easter. That Jesus died for us and rose from the dead never to die again is at the core of the Christian faith. These events are anticipated in the Old Testament and their meaning is interpreted throughout the New Testament. In the Gospels, however, we read the stories of these events themselves. It is important to be familiar with what the Scriptures say about who Jesus is and what Jesus did, because the rest of the Bible ultimately comes into orbit around this center. Join with the church family in reading the Gospels of Mark and John this season, as each tells the story in its own way. You can get a copy of this reading schedule printed on a bookmark at the Information Desk in the main church lobby. Let’s read and grow together!
