ADULT DISCIPLESHIP AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Reaching Higher “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18)
Growing Deeper
By God’s grace, God makes it always possible for us to grow as disciples.
Becoming Disciples
T
o me, one of the most helpful, challenging, and attractive features of our theology as United Methodists is the emphasis we place on the simple fact that God is not through with us. In this life, no matter how long or short of a time we have been followers of Jesus, God makes it possible for us to grow. Learning, growing, and living out that growth in the world are what discipleship is about. I thank God that I don’t have to remain as I am, but that increased spiritual health and strength can always lie ahead—by God’s grace. We who follow Christ are disciples. And we who follow Christ are always becoming disciples if we choose to walk a road of growth. One of the most significant tools of transformation and growth at First UMC is an experience called
2
Disciple Bible Study. You can read about Disciple and many other opportunities in the pages that follow here. We feature Disciple in this issue because this is the season to explore what this group Bible study experience is all about and to make a decision to let the next nine months be a powerful, transforming season of discipleship in your life. Disciple Bible Study groups have about a dozen participants who come together at the end of the summer and stay together until May. This means that you need to get into a Disciple study while registration is open in August. These groups do not remain open during the year because part of the Disciple experience includes participation in a consistent small group whose members are committed to study, to growth, and to one another.
The first course in the Disciple series is Disciple 1, titled Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study. It is the foundation for the other classes and is a 34-week survey of the entire Bible. This is an excellent way to get the big picture of the Bible and to begin to learn how the pieces fit the whole. Give this opportunity some prayerful consideration as you walk intentionally on God’s grace-filled path of growth for you. Let these pages inform you, and let the gifted, committed, prayerful team of leaders called the Adult Discipleship Leadership Team (ADLT) assist in any way we can. Disciple Bible Study Registration is now open!
D
isciple Bible Study is about transformation that deepens our lives across the spectrum of Christian discipleship. Disciple classes are 30- to 34-week experiences in which participants read and study the Bible in small, committed groups. The studies are for adults of all ages and experience levels, and they provide an excellent way to build or to build upon a biblical foundation for your faith. The first class in the Disciple series, Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study, surveys both the Old and New Testaments over 34 weeks. In this course, you will deepen your awareness of the whole biblical story and have the opportunity to discuss and learn more about how God calls us to respond to that story today. This is the foundation class and is a prerequisite for the rest. Other Disciple classes focus on smaller sections of the Bible over the course of the year and may be taken in any order. (See page 7 for descriptions of the classes.) Each group (typically about 12 participants) is led by a trained facilitator who has not only the knowledge and experience to lead Disciple, but the heart to share in a
journey of growth with others who want to know more about the Bible and its application to life. Disciple is one of the strongest in-depth group Bible studies available and includes daily preparations of about 30-45 minutes, along with a weekly group study session of about two hours. As we grow in knowledge by spending dedicated time in Bible study, we find greater meaning in our lives, deeper faith, and sharper priorities. And when we do Bible study in small group communities like Disciple, we develop lasting friendships as we pray, study, and grow together. Be informed, transformed, and heart-warmed on your journey as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Registration opens on Sunday, July 29, at sharingtheheart.org/disciple, or at the registration table at church on Sundays until August 19. You’ll find Sunday, evening, and daytime classes to choose from. They begin in late August and early September, so don’t delay in getting into a group by registering for your preferred time.
In the 2012-13 Disciple season, FUMC is offering: Disciple 1: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study (survey of the Old and New Testaments) Disciple 2: Into the Word, Into the World (Genesis, Exodus, Luke, Acts) Disciple 3: Remember Who You Are (Old Testament Prophets and the Letters of Paul) Disciple 4: Under the Tree of Life (Old Testament Writings, Gospel and Letters of John, James, Jude, and Revelation) Jesus in the Gospels (comparative study of the portraits of Jesus in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) Christian Believer (study of the classical doctrines of the historic Christian faith)

Adult Sunday School Growing Together in Community Make Bible Study a Part of Your Sunday Morning
D
id you know that hundreds of adults participate in classes at First United Methodist Church every Sunday morning? Adult Sunday school is the church’s largest discipleship ministry and has much to offer for study, growth, and fellowship. The 23 regular adult classes on Sunday mornings include large lecture-style classes, mid-sized guided discussion Bible studies, and smaller groups that focus on biblical topics in more personal and informal settings. From inductive Bible studies to topical book discussions to marriage and family-focused fellowships, FUMC has a variety of opportunities on Sundays that are sure to include a match for your interests and style. And, there is always room for you! Sunday school classes welcome visitors and those who just want to “shop around.” The Adult Discipleship Leadership
Many of the various classes maintain a web page on the church’s site at sharingtheheart.org/adults. There you can see a basic description of the group, the meeting time and place, and a person to contact if you would like more information. Often you can also find a description of the current study and other activities in which the class is involved. At FUMC, we believe that a life of faith is a life of growth, and we invite you to grow with us on Sunday mornings. We welcome your presence and participation as we open our lives together to the transforming experience of Bible study in community.

Sisterhood is an interactive fellowship of women of all ages and seasons of life.
This class is focused on sharing life with one another and creating an extended Christian family circle. In that spirit, we believe it is important to have social events involving families. At our family Fall party, kids paint pumpkins, then we deliver them to local nursing homes. We do similar events during the Christmas season.
The following studies are coming up:
In addition to family activities, we have women’s and men’s outings. Everyone is welcome to join us!

Sunday Morning Discipleship at FUMC Faith Connections
Stepping Stones
A Sunday Morning Bible Study
Young Adult Fellowship
Faith Connections is a community. A growing community of interactive study, learning, and faith. A community committed to the basic principle that one of the places that spiritual growth happens is the place where people of faith encounter the Word of God together. It is certainly not the only place, but it is a powerful place, a proven place. Faith Connections is also a practical place. Basic Bible study and everyday questions of faith come together here. Bible, faith, and life intersect so that we grow together not in theory, but in our ability to live what we learn. In biblical terms, such a life is one that affects and influences the world around us like a lamp offers light. Faith Connections welcomes any age, life stage, and Bible experience. As a faith community, discipleship and relationship are the focus and systematic Bible study is the agenda. Typically the class makes its way through books of the Bible and sets its own pace depending on the class discussion. Pastor John Harman is the lead teacher in Faith Connections, and he serves with a gifted team of other leaders, including those who lead the group in service, giving, and mission opportunities. This summer, the class is looking at the Book of Job. The study is called A Messy Faith. On September 16, a new series will begin in the books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth. Stop by Faith Connections at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays in Room C210, and see what’s going on. You are always welcome to visit, to come and go, or to find a regular home alongside your worship time on Sunday mornings!

Each class will include Dr. Kimmel’s video presentation of the session for about 20 minutes, followed by class discussion. Weekly questions for discussion are broken up into three categories: basic questions to get people comfortable and talking; questions and Scripture passages to help solidify the concepts presented by Dr. Kimmel; and questions to help participants apply principles in their own lives and families.
Disciple Bible Study A Year of Transformation
What are the Disciple Courses? Disciple 1: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study
Disciple 2: Into the Word, Into the World
This 34-week foundational class spends the fall in the Old Testament and the spring in the New. It takes you through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, prompting you along the way to consider the big picture and your own relationship and response to it. By reading more than 70% of the Bible yourself during the year, you will understand and appreciate more deeply the grand story of God’s love and grace, and the hope of the Christian faith. Plan to invest 30-45 minutes a day plus the weekly group meeting time for any of the Disciple classes.
This 32-week study encourages you to open yourself to hear what God has to say through the Bible and to be guided into your particular ministry in the world. The study selects specific portions of the Bible and goes more deeply into them. Equal attention is given to the Old and New Testaments, with concentration on four books: Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts (8 lessons on each book). Appropriate connections are made to other parts of the Bible, both through reading and study assignments and through the commentary in the study manual.
Disciple 3: Remember Who You Are
Disciple 4: Under the Tree of Life
This 32-week Bible study includes the Old Testament Prophets (from Isaiah to Malachi) and the New Testament letters of the Apostle Paul. It focuses on the connection between memory and identity for the people of God. Major themes include the call to remember, the call to repentance, the need for renewed vision, and the place of community. Remember Who You Are understands Bible study as a call to turn our lives more and more toward God and encourages us to be a people who puts God first— a community of obedience.
“Being a faithful community, we freely choose to be bound together as the people of God.” This is an example of one of the “Marks of Faithful Community” from this 32-week study. As the Writings of the Old Testament (like Ruth, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Daniel, and Chronicles, for example) and writings from the Apostle John (the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation) are read, you are constantly reminded that life lived in community, faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ, is the answer to the “human condition.”
Jesus in the Gospels
Christian Believer: Knowing God with Heart and Mind
A second-generation Disciple study, Jesus in the Gospels, focuses on the portraits of Jesus found in the four New Testament Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This 30week encounter with the Gospel books seeks to build a solid, biblical understanding of Jesus’ life, ministry, death and resurrection as they are revealed through the different voices of the Gospel authors. Lessons 1-22 concentrate on Matthew, Mark, and Luke, with some related passages from John. Lessons 22-30 concentrate on the Gospel of John with supporting passages from other parts of the New and Old Testaments. In the course of the 30 weeks, participants will read the four Gospels and considerable amounts of Scripture from other parts of the Bible.
Christian Believer is a 30-week study of the classical doctrines of the Christian faith that aims at presenting, explaining, and interpreting those doctrines for informed believing. In Christian Believer, faithful understanding comes through the disciplined daily reading of Scripture and the writings of early and modern church leaders. Christian Believer emphasizes the relationship between worship, belief, and daily life. The beliefs of the Christian community, taught within the Christian community, equip the community for living faithfully and for passing on the faith entrusted to it.

FUMC in the Holy Land 2013 Travel with Friends in the Footsteps of Jesus
A
true discipleship highlight this year has been the journey to the Holy Land that FUMC made in January. A group of 20 from FUMC went on a very special ten-day pilgrimage called “Christian Friends Following in the Footsteps of Jesus.” This amazing trip was organized and led by Adult Discipleship Leadership Team (ADLT) member Tina Ripperger and accompanied by Pastor John Harman. Some of the sites the group visited were Caesarea Maritima, Mt. Carmel, Nazareth, Cana, the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, the Mount of Beatitudes, Caesarea Philippi, Bethlehem, Bethany, Jericho, Qumran, Masada, the Dead Sea, and of course, Jerusalem (among others). Another journey is in the planning, scheduled for January 18 to 27, 2013. Many of the same locations are

on the itinerary, and registration for the trip is open. Information sessions will be held on July 29 and August 19 so you can meet with the trip organizers, hear a brief presentation, and ask all the questions that you have. Both sessions will be at 5:30 p.m. at the church in Room C200. In October and November, a series of classes to prepare for the trip will be led by Pastor John Harman and will include topics in Bible study, history, geography, and archaeology relevant to the places the group will visit. Pick up a brochure for the trip in the main church lobby, and take a look at the website created around this experience: www.FUMCintheHolyLand.org. The site has been updated to include details of the 2013 trip, and you can download the brochure from there as well. Personal Bible Reading Reading the Bible for Growth and Strength in 2012
S
o far this year, we have read through the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John, in addition to other portions of the Bible. As we begin the fall season, we begin the Book of Luke and its “sequel,” the Book of Acts. Many believe that both books were written by the same person. By reading these two back-to-back, we gain a perspective on the continuity between the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus and the coming of the Holy Spirit and life of the early church. We will understand each better as we read and study the other. As you read over the next two months, let what you see and learn help you to walk in the grace of Jesus Christ and live in the power of the Spirit as a witness to what God has done for you and in you, and is now doing through you. You can get a copy of this reading schedule printed on a bookmark in the main church lobby. Let’s read and grow together!
