THE HOLIDAYS ARE HERE!
TREND REPORT: Creating accent walls with board and batten
LAST MONTH we introduced you to board and batten (a simple wall dressing that traditionally uses wide boards nailed side-byside with strips of narrow wood called a batten layered on top to cover the seams), but this month we encourage you to think out of the rectangular box. Let your imagination run wild: try turning the boards vertical, making squares, or even create a herringbone design. Have some fun with it!
I love the idea of painting the board and batten a bold color to create an amazing focal wall. The materials are inexpensive and the outcome looks like a high-end custom design—no one will ever know that it was a DIY project.
If you are inspired to give it a go, there is a great tutorial from DIY enthusiast Christine on her blog honeybuilthome.com. While some of these designs require careful measuring and planning, the extra effort results in a stunning feature wall you’ll be excited to show off to your holiday guests. n
