UPDATING TO THE LATEST TRENDS doesn’t have to break the bank. “Often, the most beautiful interiors are those that do not follow one single trend”, according to Emma Sims Hilditch of Sims Hilditch Interior Design. The most eye-catching spaces offer “a careful blend of eclectic pieces, considered fabrics, and functional design solutions.”
Art deco is now experiencing a resurgence and mixed with traditional furnishings it adds visual interest and glamour. Look for curvilinear or mirrored pieces and accessories with sunburst shapes, zigzag and chevron patterns, or sweeping curves. But don’t over do it! Too many zigzags, geometric shapes, and rich colors in one room feel dated.
I really like how the designer, Emily Henderson, used this deco influenced wallpaper as a statement in the bedroom. It’s a fun way to bring back this era in an inspired way instead of over doing it. Try it in a bathroom or on one wall of a gathering area such as the living or dining room. It’s a great backdrop to other pieces you may have collected. n
