DESIGN TRENDS: New Year, New Home
W
ondering what design trends will usher in 2021? Now might be the time to ask your grandparents for tips. A New Year often brings along with it the desire to renew and refresh both ourselves and our surroundings. For 2021, experts predict there will be a greater focus on creating rooms that foster a warm, nostalgic feel— no surprise after such a cumbersome and unsettling year. Here are two of these trends that might bring you both comfort and joy: 2
1 1 / GRANDMILLENIAL DESIGN takes florals, lace finishes, velvet furniture, and antique decor and gives them a modern spin. Real Homes calls this “a new 2020/21 name for granny chic,” but don’t worry—there is a way to do it without making your home look like your nannas’. Go big on the old fashioned prints and designs, and give spaces a modern twist by adding in a more contemporary piece such as a mid-century style velvet sofa for a more nostalgic, and less stuffy, feel. 2 / COTTAGECORE was made popular by Instagram and Tik-Tok fashion influencers, and draws its inspiration from the English countryside with delicate floral prints, vintage fabrics, and wicker accessories. Sara McDaniel of Simply Southern Cottage blog says: “To put it into perspective, think of Narnia combined with Little House on the Prairie.” If flowers aren’t your thing, no worries: gingham, plaids, and other striped designs are a central part of creating this unique style. n

I
am beyond thrilled at the response to our first Arlington Heights Christkindl market! The idea for the event hit me as I was pulling out my holiday decor and came across the mugs I’ve collected over the years from the Chicago Christkindl market. I’ve been wanting to find a way to help our local merchants who are faced with the challenges brought about by shopping and dining restrictions. The idea was to have each merchant feature a holiday item or special and allow the community to stroll the town enjoying sights, sounds, and tastes similar to what you may experience at a traditional holiday market. With a small group of similar minded agents assisting I’ve been honored with the coordination, we were able to quickly pull in to help 40 clients 18 merchants eager to participate. As we faced further buy and sell their restrictions, in order to reinforce safety, we scaled back homes safely and and created a “pop-by” version of the event. My number one goal was to benefit the merchants without having successfully this them invest money or time of their own. We provided all past year. of the creative work, signage, and promotional pieces and purchased over $750 worth of merchandise to raffle off to attendees. We even brought in a special guest to help with the raffle drawing (check it out on my Instagram). By all accounts it was a huge success and we are hoping for a bigger, better, and more interactive event in 2021! 2020 has taught me patience, understanding, and reinforced the importance of gratitude, goodwill, and being there for each other. I’ve been honored to help 40 clients buy and sell their homes safely and successfully this year. I’ve learned to adapt and try new things. I’m particularly proud to have founded the Baird & Warner: Mission Community initiative and orchestrated our drivethrough 4th of July parade, Wish Tree event, and book drive (I was buried in over 350 donated books, thanks to your generosity—see pic at right!). We are all hoping for a better 2021, and I look forward to offering my support to you and our community to help make it a little bit brighter. n
