THIS MONTH: Caring for our Communities

S

howing gratitude to our essential and frontline workers starts at home. Whether working on the front lines of an essential business, at home making masks, inspiring students via online classrooms, or providing food to those in need, we all owe a debt of gratitude to those who have gone above and beyond in service to our communities during the COVID crisis. I’ve been so impressed with how so many of you have come together to support each other. I’ll be giving some extra special recognition to one individual with a gift of a free one-room makeover by myself and my design team! If you know of a deserving individual, please nominate him or her for my “Key to Our Community” program through June 30th. For complete details, visit ShaunnaBurhop.com. The Return of the Mudroom

I

t’s hard to predict the changes we may see in home design post-pandemic. After the 1918 Spanish Flu, half-bathrooms became a necessity as homeowners strove to keep visitors (and their potential germs) away from their family’s main restroom. Before COVID, most of us put little thought into how we enter our homes. Plop your purse on the counter or throw a sweaty jacket over a kitchen chair? No problem. Now, however, Americans have adopted complicated routines that include wearing masks, washing their hands, and carefully removing clothes and shoes to minimize the risk of bringing the virus into their homes. Whether for your own family’s use or for guests, creating a designated spot to remove shoes, hang up jackets, or apply sanitizer before stepping in (or out) is a great way to increase safety and reinforce healthy habits during this time. n
