DOWNSIZING AND RETIRING:
Make room for a new future
WHERE TO BEGIN ORGANIZING or decluttering a lifetime’s worth of possessions may seem like a daunting task. But after years of seeing many clients struggle with the process of downsizing, moving during a time of transition into a smaller home or retirement destination, or trying to manage a family estate after the loss of a loved one—we saw a need to encourage an early and proactive approach and develop solutions to help.
In 2023 we created a seminar “Less is More” where attendees are asked thoughtprovoking questions and given a package of curated tips, tricks, and resources to help them take a systematic approach to a lifestyle move. Be on the lookout for future Less is More session dates; but in the meantime, if you or a loved one are starting to consider downsizing and want to get a jump on tackling the physical “stuff” that’s accumulated—keep yourself from getting overwhelmed by breaking the work down into smaller tasks:
1. Make a list of all your spaces (email us for our worksheet!).
2. Assign each space a day on your calendar.
3. Start with an easy space (for example, try the linen closet first instead of a bedoom).
4. Next, try a surface purge, tackling the counter and furniture tops first.
5. Use boxes to sort and organize and use varying colored Post-it notes such as KEEP, SELL, GIVE TO______, RECYCLE, AND TOSS.
6. Toss anything expired, stained, or broken.
7. Check resources such as earth911.com for ideas on how and where to recycle various items.
7. Take breaks and reward yourself after each room is completed!
