DESIGN TRENDS: A toast to Spring!
WHILE IT SEEMED LIKE WINTER would never end, spring is upon us and we’re finally able to turn our attention to enjoying some time outdoors. Whether you have an expansive backyard or a tiny city balcony, there’s always room to enhance your outdoor living space and create your own secluded oasis. Often a simple privacy screen is the best way to block a bad view or nosey neighbors and create a cozy outdoor nook. Many options are available online, or you can get creative and upcycle some old shutters and a few hinges into a folding partition (see inset photo at right). Paint it a bold color and voila!
And don’t forget the most important part: a place to entertain. A bar cart can be a very useful and compact means of storage, as well as a great tool for serving—roll it from indoors to outside while keeping your drinks and apps within arm’s reach. We love the vibe of this bamboo version (find a similar one at birchlane.com); it’s perfect for mixing up our new fav cocktail, The Kentucky Buck! n — Shaunna Burhop

AS YOU PREPARE to spruce up your home this spring and summer, two pieces of research can help you pick the upgrades that will bring you the greatest return on investment and hopefully some joy along the way.
The 2023 Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features from the National Association of REALTORS® looks at the typical cost of 11 outdoor projects, the money homeowners can recover on upgrades when they sell, and the “joy score”— a rating of how much happiness each completed remodeling project can bring.
Which ones look good to you? Geography may play a role in both the joy and cost recovery rankings; feel free to reach out with questions if you’d like our opinion about the impact in your area. We are here and happy to advise, especially if you are thinking of selling in the future and want to recoup some of your investment costs.
