DESIGN TRENDS: Zoom Your Room, part II 1 / DON’T LIMIT YOURSELF to traditional framed or canvas pieces. Try mixing in threedimensional items such as this trumpet or other treasures—they blend in seamlessly with the art and add an element of whimsy.

2 Part Two: ARTWORK
W
ith work-home life still blurred and Zoom and other video-based meetings a normal part of our routine, I’m continuing to highlight ways to add style to your surroundings. Your background gives you the opportunity to show off your personality and adding artwork may be the simplest way to liven up your walls. A large bold colorful piece immediately brings character to your space—abstract paintings are a great choice to bring in a lot of color, but old vintage maps are also a great option. If you don’t own something large or can’t decide on just one, try to use a grouping of smaller pieces. Sites like Minted. com and Society6.com have a boundless collection of photo, mixed media, and graphic design prints from independent artists and are a great place to start. Or keep budgets in check by purchasing inexpensive frames to make your own “art.” Frame pages from old coffee table books or even try layering scrapbook or giftwrap paper over old artwork (an old staging trick!).
2 / STAY CLASSIC by printing out your favorite photos in black and white but then up the interest by mixing up the frame size and finish.

2 / YOUR FAVORITE ARTISTS might be closer to home than you think—mine are my kids! Here is what I did in my own office and it brings me joy every day. More next month! n

MAKE THIS! Fresh Apple Butter
F
all is one of my favorite times of the year. When the leaves turn their beautiful shades of red, gold, and orange, I’m reminded of growing up in Michigan where we were surrounded by apple orchards and making applesauce was a fall tradition. This year, instead of applesauce I just made apple butter for the first time. It is traditionally served over hot biscuits or fluffy pancakes, but it also adds flavor to apple desserts (message me and I’ll send you the recipe for the Apple Butter Bread I just made—we couldn’t stop eating it!). Allow time to make the apple butter; it’s easy, but takes 10 hours total in the slow cooker. The recipe below will yield about 7 cups— perfect for sharing and spreading the love! n
INGREDIENTS • 10 lbs mixed apples, peeled and cored (I used 2.5 lbs Granny Smith, 2.5 lbs Honeycrisp, 5 lbs Golden Delicious) • 3 cups granulated sugar, divided (I cut back and only used 1 cup in Step 2) • 2–3 teaspoons ground cinnamon (depending on your taste) • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cut apples into one-inch cubes; place apple cubes and 1-½ cups of the sugar in a 6-quart slow cooker. Cover and cook on HIGH for 6 hours. 2. Stir in cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and remaining 1-½ cups sugar. Cover; cook on LOW until apples are very soft, for 4 hours. 3. Place half of apple mixture in a blender. Secure lid on blender, and remove center piece to allow steam to escape. Place a clean towel over opening. Pulse until smooth or to desired texture; repeat with remaining apple mixture. Cool completely. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month. n
