Part One: BOOKSHELVES

H

omes are indeed personal spaces and we are all sharing a little more than usual while connecting via Zoom or other hangout apps. In a new ongoing monthly series here, I’ll be highlighting some easy ways we can upgrade our backdrops and make them the talk of the next conference call. Bookshelves as a backdrop might be the best place to start, and can give you an opportunity to tell a story about you. They can also easily be restyled to fit your mood or add seasonal interest. Experts advise to mix objects, collections, and knick knacks to create small vignettes (clusters of items in groups of three to five, as odd numbers are naturally more pleasing to the eye). Don’t overlook items like the seashells you’ve gathered on your family vacations, pine cones you collected in the mountains, or interesting desert rocks. You can also use the back of the bookshelf or wall as a gallery ledge to lean artwork, trays, or even a small mirror (as long as it doesn’t reflect the camera!).

2 / STAY NEUTRAL Using items you already have around the house or yard, group objects that feel light, bright, and white to create a calm backdrop. Spray paint a branch or use a metallic frame to add just a touch of glam.

3 / OR, GO BOLD Group books by color for more impact. Missing a few? Cover them with scrapbook paper—a design trick we use all the time for staging. More next month! n

UPCOMING EVENT:

Mission Community: Wish Tree

I

nspired by the popular book “Wishtree” written by Katherine Applegate, Baird & Warner Northwest Suburban will host an interactive art event planned to evolve in design over four days: September 24-27th outside our office at 210 W. Northwest Highway. Everyone is invited to visit our Wish Tree and place a ribbon symbolizing your own good wish or intention. We hope the end result will be an inspiring public art display representing the wishes of those throughout the northwest suburban community. The book Wishtree is a story about inclusivity and community—important tenets of the B&W Mission: Community program. The overall objective of Mission: Community is to provide an ongoing program of goodwill and support to both residents and local organizations. We will be collecting new or gently used children’s books to donate to local families in need and also giving away tree seedlings for you to plant your very own Wish Tree. Think about making it an educational outdoor cultural arts experience for your family or small group by reading the book before your visit. B&W will provide pre-cut ribbons and markers, and safety and social distancing practices will be in place. As always, follow me on social media to stay up-to-date on all our events! n

Feeling crafty? Woodcrafters has teamed up with local restaurants to host pop-up events—check out the coasters I painted while enjoying a drink at the Coasters & Cocktails event held recently at CoCo & Blu (12 S. Dunton Ave., Arlington Heights). They also offer great take-home kits to make all kinds of fun and useful items for around the house. woodcraftersdiystudio.com n
