The “it” color for today’s hardware, matte black, can add a touch of drama or contrast and pairs well with painted or stained finishes. BELOW: A sampling from Schoolhouse.com; they also offer some fantastic guides to use when selecting cabinet hardware.
pdating your cabinet hardware is one of the easiest, most budget friendly ways to make a serious visual impact and elevate your kitchen or bath space. The “it” color right now is matte black because it tends to blend beautifully with all decor styles and offers a striking contrast when used with light-colored cabinetry. Billy Peele at Doug Mockett & Co. notes “Black is interesting because even though it is heavy, used against neutral earthy tones, it provides a pleasant accent. Black hardware with straight lines gives a very serious and sophisticated feeling of elegance. Black gives an edgy look in different ways—black on white for a classic look, black on black for an ultra-chic look, black on bright colors for a bold contemporary look, or black on earth tones for a calming effect.” Have you tried black hardware in your kitchen? I’d love to see it! Email a before and after to me and I’ll post some of my favorites on Instagram. n

ransforming spaces through staging is one of the most exciting parts of getting a home ready to sell. Fresh paint and rearranging furniture consistently provide the biggest impact with minimal investment—and allow potential buyers a way to visualize how they could best live in the space. In the home featured here, the biggest issue was that the kitchen felt dark as well as dated. We painted the cabinets and walls, installed a stainless steel appliance package, and were able to inexpensively provide an on-trend feel by painting the existing pulls matte black; the new look is light and modern, and your attention now goes to the large picture window with a beautiful outdoor view. The dining room also felt uninviting and cramped, so we painted the walls and hung drapery panels higher to give the illusion of a taller ceiling. We also turned the table to fit the space better, and swapped out the chairs to some from my staging inventory. Lastly we had the seller remove the bulky china cabinet, and replaced it with a modern console table better for serving. The result? The seller doubled her return on the investment. Do you have a home you want to sell but feel it needs to be updated first? Call me to discuss what projects to prioritize, what truly adds value, and more surprisingly, what is not necessary. I’d love to share my tips and tricks to make your home stand out no matter your price range or budget. n
