DESIGN TRENDS: Fall into Texture
ROUNDING THE CORNER FROM SUMMER INTO FALL usually leaves us with a desire to cozy up our homes—but bridging the seasons can be a challenge. “Turning to Texture” is our new buzz phrase, and it’s a huge trend this year. Textured fabrics add loads of character to a home and are an easy way to start the transition to cooler months. Katherine from thatsouthernspark.com offers her passion for velvet: “It’s sophisticated, luxurious, and lovely, and you will see it everywhere this fall.” I have to agree; Tracy Bongiorno and I have many velvet pillows in our “staging closet” and love to mix them in with other fabrics to create visual interest in a home we are listing to sell.
Our advice is to find ways to contrast textures together—think smooth and bumpy, soft and hard, silky and leathery—and make sure to layer them together for a more upscale look. Also, think beyond fabrics to adding rattan, wicker, or even burlap decorative elements to your home. Using large woven baskets is one of our goto staging moves for adding storage. Fill them with pillows and blankets in varying textures and then sit back and enjoy that instant cozy effect.
