It’s an exciting time to be part of our community! As Sterling’s mayor, I’m thrilled to share the incredible changes underway. From a vibrant revitalized Riverfront with a fantastic new park, new businesses, and growing job opportunities, we are making significant strides to ensure our city remains a great place to live, work, and play.
Here’s a quick look at the exciting updates:
• Riverfront Renaissance: Our Riverfront is coming to life with a future new hotel, housing, restaurants, retail, and an artsy, dynamic atmosphere.
• Beautiful Parks & Recreation: We’re enhancing green spaces, adding trails, and creating more places to enjoy the outdoors. Did you know that over 92% of Sterling residents are within a 10-minute walk to a trail or a park?
• Economic Growth: New businesses are coming to town, and with them come exciting job opportunities for our residents.
• Exceptional Schools: Our public and private schools are some of the best in the area. Last year, Sterling Public Schools hosted the IHSA State Speech/ Drama Finals. We hope to be a host site for IHSA in the future. While other schools cut music, arts, and drama, the Sterling community embraces arts and culture. Sterling ensures that its renewable resources of the fine arts are a vital part of the community, both inside and outside the school system.
• A Thriving Community: Sterling has always been a strong, hardworking, and culturally diverse city. We are a safe and welcoming community that values all our residents’ contributions.
As the former “Hardware Capital of the World,” we pride ourselves on industrial growth and innovation. We are building a brighter future for Sterling and are glad you are part of it. Let’s continue to grow, connect, and make this the best place to call home.
Diana Merdian Mayor of Sterling
Please come and enjoy Dixon. Whether your intent is business or pleasure, we hope you have some time to take advantage of the many amenities that Dixon has to offer.
Dixon has a nice variety of local and regional shopping. We have an eclectic choice of dining opportunities. Our outdoor amenities are a pleasure to explore. Plus, the arts, cultural, and historical venues should arouse the interest of many.
For those that are outdoor-oriented, we have the Rock River, which you can readily access in Dixon (a part of the Rock River National Trail), and we have several parks. Let’s not forget the miles of bike and walking trails
If you prefer the indoors, shop small; or take advantage of the Next Picture Show (an art gallery), the Dixon Historic Theatre, the Northwest Territory Historic Center (a Smithsonian affiliate), the Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home, or the Loveland Community House and Museum. The arts and history abound in, and around, Dixon.
If you don’t have time to check things out today, we hope you get enough of a sense of our city to entice you to come back. Dixon is a great community in which to live, work, and play.
Glen Hughes Mayor of Dixon
Sterling, Rock Falls, and Dixon are three cities in northwestern Illinois whose histories are intricately tied to the development of the region along the Rock River. The story of these cities begins with the area’s original inhabitants, the Sauk and Fox tribes, and continues through the mid-19th century as settlers moved in following the Black Hawk War.
In 1828, Joseph Ogee claimed and settled the site of what is now known as Dixon. Two years later, “Father” John Dixon came to the area and continued the establishment of the settlement by operating a ferry across the Rock River on the busy Peoria-Galena Trail.
In June 1834, Hezekiah Brink staked
a claim down the river in what would become Sterling, just a few years after the Black Hawk War. The next year, William Kirkpatrick laid out the village of Chatham adjacent to Brink’s land. Tensions between the two settlements led to the founding of Harrisburg in 1836 by Brink and Captain D.S. Harris. The rivalry between Harrisburg and Chatham was fierce, but the two eventually came together in a coin toss to determine the name of the new town, which would become Sterling.
Early settlers anticipated the Rock River would become a major navigational route, however, it instead became an important source of water power to fuel industries on both banks.
A few years after the founding of Sterling, Augustus P. Smith established the city of Rock Falls on the southern bank of the Rock River. Smith purchased the Sterling Hydraulic Company’s water plant and used its power to run his mitten factory, promoting the use of water power to other entrepreneurs. The factory’s success fueled Rock Falls’ growth, and by 1869, the city incorporated and formed its own government.
The Hennepin Canal became another vital transportation route for area businesses, although the canal’s commercial significance waned with the advent of railroads and highways. The arrival of the railroad further accelerated industrial development, leading to the establishment of new factories and industries, and creating a vibrant local economy.
With the addition of a railroad, the region saw rapid industrial growth, particularly
with the founding of the Northwestern Barb Wire Company by Washington M. Dillon in the mid-19th century. This company evolved into Northwestern Steel and Wire, which became the region’s largest employer until it closed in 2001, leaving a lasting impact on the community through Dillon’s investments in the area.
A unique chapter in the history of these cities is the story of Silver City, a community of converted railroad boxcars that housed steelworkers and their families in the post-World War II era. Located in
Sterling near the Northwestern Steel and Wire mill, Silver City was primarily home to Hispanic families, many of whom came from small towns to work in the mill. This community marked an important moment in the region’s labor history, contributing to the postwar economic boom, and is a source for many of the traditions celebrated in Sterling to this day.
Today, the cities of Sterling and Rock Falls remain connected to their industrial past, honoring their history through preservation efforts and community events. They continue to be vibrant communities, with a rich cultural diversity that reflects the generations of settlers and workers who shaped their development.
