Giffordsufferedsevereinjuriesandwas airliftedbyaMedForcehelicoptertoJavon BeaHospital inRockford.Onestudenton thebuswastransportedbyCGHAmbu-
lancetoMorrison CommunityHospital withsuspectedminorinjuries, Booker said.
Thebusdriverandfiveotherstudents onthebuswerenotinjured.

Theformer HarborCrestNursingHome,situated on4.8acresat81717thSt.inFulton,soonwillbe developedintomulti-unitrentalhousingforseniors. CattailVillageSeniorApartmentswilloffer26 one-bedroomrentalunits,eachequipped with a washer/dryer,stove,refrigeratorandmicrowave ovenforoneortwoseniorsages55andup.
JasonMarcusofClinton,Iowa,purchasedthesite withawinningbidof$280,000atanOct.29auction.He ownsMarcusContractingServices(MCS)andKurtz GlassCompany,bothinClinton,andhealsoowns andmanagesotherapartmentbuildingsinClinton. TheformernursinghomesitsonthesiteofFulton’s firsthome.
Marcusestimatesthecostwillbe$1,935,600toconvertthenursinghomefloorplanintothedesirable-sizedapartments.Thepropertywillbemanaged bytheowner,andanattendantwillbeon-siteto accommodaterenters.
AndrewRichmond,Marcus’sson-in-law,works forMCSandwillbeinvolvedwiththeremodeling. Thename“CattailVillage”wassuggestedbyMarcus’sdaughterAbigail.Earlymapsandpostcards spelltheword“Cat-Tail”becausethewaterflowing intothenearbysloughwrapsitselfaroundthenortheastsectionofthecityland.It’s notnamedafterthe fuzzy,brownCattailplant.

ThevillageofEriesoonwillbegettinganewsubdivisiononthecornerofAlbanyStreetand16th Avenue.The9-acresubdivision isbeingdeveloped byRockRootsDevelopment,LLCwithconstruction plannedtobeginthissummer.
TheVillageBoard ofTrusteesheld a specialmeeting Monday,Jan.30,and approvedthepreliminaryplatthatwas submitt ed bythe developers.
“Wearededicated toseeingthisdevelopmentcometofruition,”saidKatelin Bridgman,Villageof Erie’s CommunityandEconomicDevelopment Director.“Thevillagehasbeenlayingthefoundationforthisprojectforoverayear.Noneofitwould bepossiblewithouttheErieTaxIncrementFinancingDistrict,establishedJuly2022inpartnership withtheErieCommunityUnitSchoolDistrict, whichwillhelpreimbursefortheinfrastructure costsonallthelots.Beingabletobringthiscapital incentivetothedevelopersiswhatmadethisdeal possible.”

Mrs.JulieGeyer,FultonElementaryfourthgradeteacher,receivedthe 2013ConservationTeacherAward WendyRomanoftheWhitesideCounty SoilandWaterConservationDistrict presentedtheawardtoGeyer.
LongQTsyndromeis arareheart conditionthatmaycausepotentially significantproblems.Unfortunately, sometimesthefirstawarenessmaybe thedeathofayounginfantorteen Theconditionisestimatedtooccurin 1in10,000peopleandinsuchindividuals,theannualmortalityisabout 5%.Theconditiontendstoruninfamiliesinasmanyas60%ofindividuals.
Whatarepotentialsymptoms?
Unfortunately,theearlysymptoms maybeexcusedforotherevents because theyfrequentlyoccurin healthypeopleand areshort-term. Somepatientsarepronetofaintingor havethemedicalcondition,syncope. Theseareaggravatedduring high emotionalstatesorexercise.While theconditionisnotaseizure,itis sometimesmistakenforaseizure.
ThenationalregistryforLongQT syndromereportsthatemotional statesmaybethetriggerinabout50%
ofcasesandvigorousphysicalactivity maybeassociatedwithanother40%. Even awakeningcancauseproblems and,unfortunately,even loudsounds maytriggertheevent.Swimmingis knowntobe acommoncauseof triggerwithdangerousrhythmdisturbance.Evenalarmclocksandringing phonesmaysetthisoff.Whileitisnot completelyestablished,itisfeltthis condition may accountforsomeSIDS deaths.Whilerhythmdisturbances maybeassociatedwithconditions,it isimportanttonotethiscondition doesnotpresentaspalpitations.
Thework-upbegins withanelectrocardiogram,orECG,alsoknown asanEKG.Inaddition,HolterMonitoring,whichmonitorstheheartover aperiodofa day,may helptouncover someeventsthatarenotreadily detectedwhileonashortracingsuch asanECG.Occasionallystress tests areperformed.
TherearesevenidentifiedLongQT Wavesyndromes.Onthe cellular
level,theypresentwithvarious defects, butontheorganlevel,they shareincommontheimportantdisturbanceofelectricalconductivity. Certaindrugsandmedicinesmay increasetheriskofthiscondition. Evensomeheartmedicinesareknown toaggravatethiscondition.Other medicinesincludephenothiazines,tricyclicsusedformooddisordersand otherconditions,lithiumandafew othermedicines.Sometimesitis a combinationofmedicineandnotone medicineinparticular.Theconditions alsocanbetriggeredinsomeby alteredpotassium,calciumandmagnesium.Anorexiamayaggravatethe riskandtriggertheconditiondefects andmayexplainthedeathsofsome anorexics.Infections,headtrauma andothercentralnervouseventsalso maysetoneupforthiscondition.
Treatmentconsistsgenerallyof medicinescalledbetablockers.Therapyisconsideredabout90%effective. Onoccasion,morespecifictreatment
directedtothetypeofdefectdetected maybeemployed.Occasionally implanteddefibrillatorsmaybenecessary,thoughgenerallybetablockersoftenare adequate.Inrarecases, a procedureknownasstellectomymay beperformedtodiminishtheadrenalinedrive,butthisisnotgreatly employedbecauseofcontroversies. Unfortunately,someindividualswill succumb to deathevenwithappropriate treatment.SomebelievetheNo. 1 reasonofdeathamongthosebeing treatedisfailuretotakethemedicine appropriately.
This conditionmaybediscovered incidentallyafteranotherfamily memberhasgonethroughoneof the aboveeventsandpossiblyafterunexplaineddeaths.Twelvepercentof familymemberswilldevelopsevere symptomsandupto4%willdiesuddenly.Again,mostwhoaretreated willsurviveandbeabletoperform mostoftheirday-to-dayfunctions withoutmajorrisk.
