They were chosenfor the award in recognition of their work in advising the public about the recent tax increase referenda.
In drastic action that is expected to reducethedistrict’sexpenditures some $300,000 next year, the Board of Education of the River Bend School District terminated the services of more than a dozen teachers at their meeting. “I’mstillprettyskinny,butIwaswayskinnier, I wasawkwardand terrified,andIhadnoconfidencein myselfwhatsoever,”Veltroprecalled.“Ijustknew I hadtoplay,soIkindofjustwentoutthereandtried mybest. Butwelost every game,anditkindofhurt my egoalittlebit.
“IwouldneverhaveimaginedthatIwouldcome thisfar,seeinghowIwaswhenIwasafreshman.The transformationthatI’vehad… it’sjust beencrazy.”

TheearlydaysforVeltropandthe Fillieswererough.Ateamrelyingon a timidfreshmanstillfinding herway struggledtowingames,andhersophomoreseasonwaseventougherafterthe COVIDpandemicwipedoutallbut10 games;Morrisonlostthemall.
ButVeltropwasprovingGrim’s decisiontomoveheruptovarsitytobe therightone.Sheaveraged10.1points, 8.7reboundsand3.1blockspergameas afreshman,then12.2points,11.4 rebounds,5.1blocksand2.9assistsin herabbreviatedsophomoreseason.
Andwhilethewinsweren’ttherein 2021,thatseasondidendupsettingthe foundationforfuturesuccess.
“WehadsaidallalongthatIwas bringingthesophomoresupthatseason.Shelbywasalreadyhere,andshe andherclassmatesreallywerethebetterathletesoutofthegroupthatIhad atthetime,andwesaideverything duringthatCOVIDyearwastowork towardourfuture,”Grimsaid.
Itworked.Morrison went18-6in 2021-22,withVeltropaveraging16 points,10rebounds,fourassistsand3.6 blockspergame.AtoughlosstoEastland ina1Aregionalsemifinal to end herjunioryearmotivatedtheFillies evenmore,and theyfinished23-9this seasonand madeittotheregional finals,wheretheylosttoatoughOrangevilleteam.

Hergoalwasn’ttobetheall-time leading scorer, or toaverageacertain numberofrebounds,orblockacertain numberofshots.Itwastoseethehard worksheandherteammateshadbeen puttingintheprevioustwoseasons turnintovictories.
JoinedbyfreshmansisterCamryn lastseason,theFilliessawtheturnaroundtheyhadbeenlookingfor.
“Sophomoretojunioryear,thegoal wasdefinitelytojustwinsomegames, becausewedidnotwinmuchatall.So atfirst,mygoalwastowin,”Shelby Veltropsaid.“Thenjunioryear,when westartedwinningmore,itwasso exciting. Wehadkind of aheartbreakinglosstotheseasonlastyear;wegot upsetintheregional.Lastyear,CamrynandIbothhadprettygoodachievements,butitwasmoreimportantfor metowin.Soafterlastseason,wehad thegoalsetinmindthatwecouldeven winmore.”
LedbytheVeltroptwintowers, Morrisonpickeduprightwhereitleft offin2022,startingthisseason strong andtyingforsecond-mostwinsinaseasoninprogramhistory–andthepostseasonaccoladescamerollingin.
“Wereallywantedaregionalchampionship,butdidn’tquitemakeit–but we’restillproudofhowwedidas a team,andthen it’salsoexcitingwhen theseason’sovertoseetheawards cominginforbothCamrynandI,and weevenhadanothergirlonourteam, DianaRobbins,gethonorablemention all-conference;thatwasexcitingtoo,” Veltropsaid.“Youdon’treallywantto say,‘Oh,mygoalistogetfirst-team all-conferenceandmaketheSaukValleyAll-AreaTeamorwhatever,but that’sexcitingtoseewhenithappens, becauseyouworkreallyhardtobe a betterplayerandit’sanicerewardat theend.”
ThefactthatVeltropwasmore focusedonteam-orientedgoalsthan individualhonorswasnosurpriseto anyonearoundher.Infact,Grim would’vebeenshockedifthefirst wordsoutofVeltrop’smouthwhen
askedabouthergoalshadn’tbeen aboutwinninggames.
“She’s100%a teamplayer.She’s definitelythatkidwhoherbiggestgoal iswinninggames,”Grimsaid.“She hatestolose;thereasonwhysheplays basketballistowingames,andshe doesn’tplayforpersonalaccolades at all–althoughshedefinitelydeserves theonesthatshegets.”
Withthatattitude,it’seasytosee whytheindividualscoring,reboundingandblocksrecordsweren’tfront andcenterinVeltrop’smind.Infact, shereallyhadnoideawhatthose recordswere,orthatshewaseven closetobreakingthem.
Andnow,evenwhenshe’stheone atopthosecareerlists,it’sstillnot somethingshethinksabouttoomuch.
“No,itwasneveronmymind, I didn’tevenknowIwascloseto1,000 pointsthisyear,atall.Ididn’tknowthe record,either,”Veltropsaid.“Oncewe knewIwasgettingcloser,mydad startedlookingupthenumbersand said,‘Oh,you’regoingtobetheall-time leadingscorersoon.’Ineverknewthat Iwasclose–andIdidn’treallycare aboutitthatmuch,either,asIwas cominguponit.It’scoolwhenyouget it,butyoudon’t really worry aboutit beforeithappens–andIbetCamryn willbreakthem.Iwouldbehappyfor her;Iwouldn’tcareifshebrokethem.”

Evenwithallthegrowthasaplayer andateam,Veltrop’sbiggestjoyofthe lasttwoseasonshasbeenthechanceto playbasketballwithheryoungersister.
EnteringShelby’sjuniorseason, therewaslittledoubtthatCamryn wouldjoin heronvarsity.ButShelby stillrelishedthechancetohelpCamrynadjusttothelevelofplay,somethingsheherselfwentthroughtwoseasonsearlier.
Andtobehonest,shewasalsohappy tohaveanotherpostplayerforopposingdefensestofocuson.
“ItwassohelpfultogetCamryn withus;shehelpsalotwithtakingthe pressureoffofmesometimes,”Veltrop
said.“I’mgoingtomissplayingwith mysisteralot.WhenIthinkabouthigh schoolbasketball,oneofmyfavorite partswasplaying withher.We’rebest friends–wefightalot,too–butwe’re onlytwoyearsapart,sowe’resuper closeonandoffthecourt.Ifeellike I couldpushheralittlebit,andshecould push me toosometimes.Shewouldget kindofmadatmesometimesand wouldn’treallywanttolistentowhat I say,butI’dtellher,‘Camryn,I’molder thanyou,soyou justhavetolisten a littlebit.’
“Butthat’sprobablywhat I’mmost thankfulfor,besideshavingMissGrim forfouryears,isgettingtwoyearsto playwithmysister;Ialsohadmydad onthebenchastheJVcoach,sothat wasprettyexciting,too.I’msothankful thatwehadtwoyearstogether,just verygratefulforthat.”
Theirfather,Todd,wasastandout atRockFalls,andtheirmother,Kelly (néeVenema), was apostplayerat Morrison.Bothgirlshavealready passedorwillpassKellyontheFillies’ all-timecareerlistsforreboundsand blockedshots.
Havingthatpedigree iscertainly a plus,butGrimbelievesit’sthepairing ofthosegeneswithhermindset and workethicthathasmadeShelbyVeltropthebesttoeverweartheMorrison uniform.
