The Shawnigan heritage. Leading young people in the pursuit of personal excellence is the highest of callings. In 1916, in the middle of a secluded rainforest on Vancouver Island, C.W. Lonsdale answered that call. Even in its most humble beginnings, Mr. Lonsdale envisioned a school that would develop young people of character through the development of the complete person. 100 years later, our founder’s vision endures. Today, Shawnigan Lake School is widely regarded as one of the foremost boarding schools in Canada and the world. Our dedication to an education encompassing the mind, body, character and spirit has never wavered. As the School celebrates its 100th birthday, Shawnigan remains as dynamic as ever. We are committed to developing the skills students need to meet and exceed the challenges of the 21st century. Now is the time when our community can secure Mr. Lonsdale’s vision for the next 100 years and beyond. The Shawnigan Centennial is an invitation for you to become part of that legacy by Building on Strength.
Facing the future at 100,
our mission remains the same.
Headmaster’s Message
Chair’s Message
When the Lieutenant Governor officially opened the Learning Commons — the Main Building restored, rebuilt and repurposed — the School was literally shining as it symbolically stepped into its second century.
I sincerely hope you plan to join in the celebration of Shawnigan Lake School’s 100th birthday.
It was a marvelous occasion — a beautiful day, but the underlying theme was clear. Our mandate has been to make the Founder’s school as strong as it could be and set it up for continued success long into the future. Please take a moment to read this latest version of our appropriately named “Building on Strength” Centennial material that was sent out a few years ago. We have almost reached our goals and I would like to think that with a final effort, we will indeed succeed in our over-arching aim of setting the School up strongly and securely for the next one hundred years. As the Founder’s prayer so aptly expresses; “Grant us to know that it is not only the beginning, but the continuing of the same until it be thoroughly finished…”
As alumni, past and current parents, faculty and staff, and current students, we all have a lot to be thankful for and to celebrate in relation to our Shawnigan experience. Shawnigan has touched the lives of literally thousands of young adults with a quality boarding school education in preparation for university. We continue to strive to provide that experience with a world class facility and programs. The Centennial Capital Campaign is off to a tremendous start, and now we need the support of the entire Shawnigan community to close the remaining gap and ensure our school is sustainable and accessible. Please join in celebrating our history, and seeing how we are preparing for the next 100 years!
This is definitely a time for all who love Shawnigan to help us finish strongly. My sincere thanks in advance, Warmest regards,
David Robertson Headmaster, Shawnigan Lake School

One of my students saw Saturn. Then he went into the corner of the observatory and started dancing. I kid you not. He didn’t know how to contain his excitement over what he had just seen. It was really cool.

The Jim and Kathryn Shaw Library is more than a library. This is the hub of intellectual development for the next century. It has three prongs: research capability, mentor support and collaborative learning.

I feel very privileged to have the studio and the teachers who want to help me learn and grow. I am gaining more skills. Not only can I play and create the music, but I can produce and make it ready for an audience.

The next 100 years will continue to bring challenges to all educational institutions. To date, Shawnigan has thrived through careful stewardship and clear vision. The Centennial must be more than just a celebration of the past. It is also a defining moment in determining how Shawnigan will move forward.

We have such a deep connection to the arena. It’s our dressing room. It’s our bench. It’s our ice. When another team comes in, the game is special because we are trying to defend what’s ours. It’s special to see people come out to watch us be a part of something.

The water-based turf is the heart of our program. It has helped us make field hockey a highlight sport at Shawnigan. In terms of skill and development, we have been blessed with the ability to give our students the best training opportunity.
